Chapter 78: New Mission

"You’re back early," said Arnold, when he came out of his room after his afternoon nap and found Edward, Aurora, and Lander sitting in the living room.

"Things went better than expected," replied Edward.

"Did you make it to the Eagle?" asked Arnold, approaching them after washing his face to wake himself up.

"No, we found it awake, and it was quite difficult to get inside. We had to settle for what we had already managed to get."

"Wow, you guys are unlucky." Arnold laughed and sat down in front of them on his personal beanbag sofa. "Did the missions arrive?"

"Indeed. We were waiting for you," said Edward, finally opening the scroll they had sent him.

It had a lot of missions inside, so it was quite large.

[Rescue the Merchant Kidnapped by Undead on the Outskirts of Karlbum.

[Attack a Thieves’ Lair in the Mountain...]

[Defend Jord’s Village from waves of Undead (Group Mission).]

[Unstoppable Quest: A Death Knight has escaped from a Dungeon.].

.

There were more than 20 missions, each with its own detailed description below its title.

"There are a lot of undead missions." Arnold counted the missions, there were 23 in total, and then counted the ones related to the undead... "There are 13 in total. Do they think we’re from the theocracy for them to send us so many?" He shook his head.

Edward was thoughtful about it. Undead missions would be much easier for him thanks to his Title. And, from what he was seeing, they were very well paid.

But the problem was that his fire was too conspicuous, and he didn’t want to show it off so much until he was strong enough not to worry about it.

So he ruled out practically all the undead missions and focused on one that was near the bottom of the list.

"How about this one? It’s a rescue mission, a bit like the one we just did. With our experience, we’ll surely be able to finish it quickly," he said, pointing his finger.

[Rescue in the Red Eagle Dungeons.] That was the name of the mission.

Some people had been kidnapped, including a wealthy man whose family had paid a lot of money for his ransom.

"I don’t know how good an idea it is to try to attack a dual dungeon," Arnold said with a chuckle.

"Well, I don’t think it’s a bad idea," Aurora said suddenly. "Even though it’s dual and there are many wind and fire eagles, we have two people capable of using wind and someone who has an attribute to counteract fire. In addition to that, with an Information Group Master like Lander, we have enough information to venture into this dungeon. Information is indispensable in a rescue mission."

Arnold quickly settled into his seat and nodded thoughtfully. "You’re right, Miss Aurora." He immediately took her side.

Edward shook his head with a smile. "Besides, we can kill some beasts along the way, which would be good for us to earn money for the group."

"I have no problem with that," Lander replied. "My magic can be used well against flying beasts."

Edward nodded and then looked at everyone, one by one, to confirm. "If so, then let’s choose this one," he said, and decided to mark it on the parchment, and they began to study it.

It was a time-limited mission, one of the few. But the time limit was one week; they had until next Friday, because although the mission explicitly stated that they wanted the hostages "dead or alive," it was preferable that they be alive and not have to rescue corpses from such a dangerous place.

The information about the kidnappers was also there, so they began to work on it.

The next morning they set off for the Red Eagles’ Dungeon, which was not in Lor, so they had to travel by carriage for a whole day until they reached Eagle City.

It was named that way because it was a city with several dungeons nearby, all of which had something to do with Eagles, but the city itself was only a place of inns and hotels for those who came to challenge these dungeons.

That’s why they didn’t go in, although they asked the person in charge of bringing them there, an academy worker, to rent rooms for them in case they needed them.

They went straight to the dungeon, which was surrounded by guards and small groups waiting nearby.

"Captain, it’s been three days already. Those guys are probably dead, and we just want to look for cores... Why don’t we all go in to look for those bodies? If they’re alive, we could even rescue them," said one of the independent Beast Masters as he spoke to the Captain of the Guard.

"It’s not that I don’t have the same doubts as you about whether they’re alive or not, but rules are rules. Only authorized personnel can enter at this time. Until people from the Armed Forces come to take charge, we can’t allow anyone access," replied the Captain.

"But, Captain..." The man sighed and looked at his boys behind him. "We depend on the cores of these dungeons, and the other dungeons are being occupied by too many groups. How are we supposed to survive if you block our entrance for 10 days?"

The Captain shrugged. "There’s nothing we can do but pray that someone decides to take on the mission."

"They don’t even care about the hostages..." The man sighed and turned to leave.

The captain agreed with his words, but said nothing. There are so many missions assigned to the Armed Forces each week that there isn’t enough time to complete them all.

Many die because someone at the Academy didn’t want to take charge, while the Armed Forces Graduates are simply too busy with high-level missions that taking on the neglected ones would be pointless.

The captain was forced to sigh... They lived in a world full of dangers and with very few people capable of overcoming those dangers. The weak were defenseless.

Just as the other turned away, he raised his spear to block the passage of a new group.

"Gentlemen, the passage to this dungeon is blocked until further notice. Please..." He couldn’t finish his words, as his eyes widened at the sight of the four-person group’s attire.

He stammered. "G-gentlemen, are you the envoys from the Armed Forces?" he asked, almost choking on his own saliva.

The man from the independent group turned abruptly to see who it was...

Edward nodded. "We came as soon as we could. How is the situation?" he asked.

The captain nodded several times with a smile on his face. "Please excuse my previous discourtesy." He bowed.

One 4-Star student, two 3-Star students, and one 2-Star student! They must be a great group!

Just because they were so young, especially the two in front, the captain already began to respect and admire them.

"Please follow me inside so I can give you the information," said the captain, turning to all his subordinates. "Gentlemen, salute the Academy Envoys! Attention, everyone, attention!" he roared, his voice echoing throughout the area.

The guards on duty and those who were not ran to their posts at the entrance to the dungeon to stand at attention, giving a military salute. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"Greetings, sirs! Welcome!" they roared in unison.

Edward was surprised by such a grand welcome, so he looked around. Aurora, Arnold, and Lander were calm, seemingly accustomed to it.

’Really? Do they always welcome us like this?’ he wondered, in shock.

Clearly ignoring the fact that he was already a member of the Armed Forces... and being a 3-Star, he was practically above any of the guards present in rank, even though he was still a student.

Even the distant groups of independent Beast Masters stood up, although they were more jealous than anything else.

"Gentlemen, the current situation inside is precarious. We don’t have much information because those guys are strong and managed to get in when the dungeon was empty. Right now, it’s dangerous to go in because the beasts have come out again, and some of the ones that were outside have recently returned," said the captain as he walked toward the dungeon entrance.

Edward nodded. "I heard that this dungeon has many corridors. Do you have any idea which one he’s in?" he asked.

"No, sir. That’s quite difficult to know, as we are not qualified to enter this dungeon. We are only here to prevent independent groups from entering."

"I see. How did they end up in there, by the way?"

"I’m not entirely sure about that, sir."

’That’s strange,’ thought Edward, looking at the entrance to the dungeon.

It was much smaller than the dungeon at the Academy he had visited a few hours earlier.

The strange thing about the case was that these guys had kidnapped several people and, instead of going to a hidden location, they chose a visible dungeon, where they themselves were in danger. Although they asked for a ransom and it was an exorbitant amount, they had locked themselves in!

’Maybe they’re in an open place and are confident they can kill the hostages before the rescue team arrives?’ he thought, which was currently the most likely scenario, since they lacked accurate information about why they were in there.

"Don’t think about it too much." Aurora tugged at Edward’s shirt sleeve. "Missions at the academy are often like this. They don’t explain much, because they just want us to understand that we must follow their orders," she whispered.

Edward nodded. "Then let’s go in. Captain, do your job as usual." Then he looked at Lander. "Time to work."
