I Level Up Dragons with My Evolution System-Chapter 55: Consequences
Edward did not return to his room; instead, he went to meet with his instructor in charge.
Knock, knock. In the instructors’ offices, he knocked repeatedly on the door marked "Instructor Mervan."
"Come in." A voice came from the other side.
Edward entered.
Mervan looked up to see who it was and, after confirming, returned to his business. He was sitting behind a desk with a stack of documents on the table. On either side were shelves filled with books, documents, and a variety of other items.
The office wasn’t very big; it was longer than it was wide, but it only had a few chairs, a desk, and neatly arranged books, so it looked spacious.
"Greetings, Instructor Mervan." Edward was respectful and greeted him. Mervan wasn’t just any ordinary instructor either. Although he wasn’t at Kael Vorren’s level, he was still a Sergeant.
"Avoid that kind of thing, student Lux," said Mervan, looking up. "I already have the creation document for the temporary group you asked me for earlier, but you’re going to need one more student. I can’t give it to you yet until then."
"All right, Instructor Mervan. When I find the fourth member, I’ll let you know," Edward replied. "That’s not why I’m here. There’s been a problem."
"What is it?" Mervan raised an eyebrow, slightly confused.
"I’ve been denied access to the training ground without a reason," Edward got straight to the point.
"Oh." Mervan nodded and frowned. He turned his gaze to the pile of documents and quickly leafed through them before grabbing one in particular. "It was an order from above. I don’t know who you’ve offended, but for this person to order it himself, I’m afraid you’re in a bit of trouble." Mervan handed him the document.
Edward read it carefully, then frowned at the end. ’I thought it was Kael Vorren, but why is it Count Hazzard?’
He remembered when he rejected the emissary’s invitation. ’For something so simple? This Count is...’ He couldn’t finish his thoughts.
All he could think was: Did something like that really make him want "revenge"?
He sighed and returned the document to Instructor Mervan. "Sorry to bother you. I’ll come back when I have the new member ready," he replied and left the office.
As he left, another student entered.
-
He wanted to find Elder Owen to see if he could solve the problem, but they weren’t close, and bothering an elder wasn’t wise. As far as he knew, he could even earn the elder’s hatred and never succeed within the academy.
He knew that Count Hazzard didn’t have enough power to completely ban him from the training camp, so he just had to wait a few weeks to return.
’But I can’t wait. Missions are more important for my strengthening than magic, I need to start doing them.’ He considered training outdoors on the academy grounds like many did, but dismissed the idea knowing he needed to train with his butterfly.
’Looks like I’ll have to spend some money.’ He sighed and walked to the academic city, where he headed to a Private Training Center.
These places, while not comparable to the academy’s Training Center, are spectacular alternatives for those seeking more privacy or a larger variety of practice tools.
The only problem... was the price.
"A medium-sized private room..." The receptionist at one of the most prestigious Private Training Centers in the underground city quickly jotted down the details on the registration parchment. "How long would you like it for, Young Master?"
"Eight hours, for now," Edward replied.
"Eight hours... perfect." She nodded. "That would be 800 Yakins."
’100 Yakins per hour...’ Edward felt a pain in his chest.
It was too expensive.
Yakins are the most expensive currency in this world. 1 Yakin is equivalent to 10 gold coins. Then 1 gold coin is equivalent to 10 silver coins. There is one more coin, the bronze coin, which is only used for very small transactions, and 1 silver coin is equivalent to 20.
People usually earn in gold coins and not too many, so the difficulty of getting 1 Yakin is clear. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
In fact, in this regard, the highest-level students are often richer than many low-level nobles. Now, most of that wealth goes to training, resources to learn magic or his beast, and similar expenses.
This is one of those expenses.
If he were banned from training at the academy for a month and wanted to use that time to learn magic, he would spend 800 to 1,200 Yakins per day, which is equivalent to more than 24 to 36% of his current monthly salary.
’I thought it was too much... now I see how little it is.’ He wanted to cry.
’I’m a 3-star student...’ He clenched his fist. ’Be strong!’ He took out his card.
"Please." His voice sounded rough, and he had to force himself to hand over the card.
"All right." The receptionist activated the magic mechanism beside her. This mechanism scanned the card and then connected to it. Then, the money emerged from his card and entered the magic device.
80 coins worth 10 Yakins each.
’No matter how many times I see this mechanism, it’s amazing.’ Edward frowned.
He had heard that the creator of this magical device was the greatest teleportation wizard currently practicing in the distant Dragon Republic. He was so skilled that he had been awarded a noble title in every kingdom where his creation was used; in Linnava, he was a count.
"Here you are, sir." The receptionist returned the card along with a key. "It’s room 23."
"Thank you very much." Edward thanked her and then continued toward the stairs. Room 23 was on the second floor.
When he reached the second floor, he was greeted by long corridors on both sides, decorated simply and lit by large torch-like lamps on the ceiling. There was an arrow indicating the number of rooms on each side.
He followed the arrow that led him to room 23.
But before he could enter, someone walked behind him to open room 24.
"Senior Edward." The young man was surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"You’re... Lander Konan, right?" Edward nodded. "I wonder the same thing. Wouldn’t you be better off training at the academy?"
Lander Konan was one of his classmates. He was of average talent and physically unremarkable. He was short and chubby, with dark brown hair and brown eyes, which did not make him stand out, as it was quite common in these lands.
He was dressed like a 2-star student; he had good strength. Edward had seen him and knew he was quite good at earth magic.
"About that..." Lander smiled, touching his throat. "I got into a fight with a young master, and it turned out he was very prestigious. I was banned from the training center. I’ll have to suffer a little in these rooms."
"Really? Something similar happened to me too."
"Huh? Ah..." Lander finally understood that they were both here for the same reason... The powerful intimidating the weak, again.
"It seems we have the same unfortunate encounters. I hope that at least we can shine in the future to shut them up." Lander clenched his fist with determination, his face shining with hope.
"I hope so too." Edward patted him on the shoulder. "Let’s talk later, we can’t waste Yakins like that, life today isn’t so easy that we can waste them." Finally, Edward entered his room after saying goodbye.
Inside, there were all kinds of machines and equipment for training. A wide variety of puppets, spaces, and rooms. These rooms were huge, no wonder renting one was so expensive.
Edward was finally able to concentrate.
It was time to start learning magic.
