Chapter 10: Extending a Hand

The Fortuner pulled to the shoulder lane and stopped. Adrian did the same, stopping just behind the SUV.

He killed the engine and swung off the bike in one smooth motion.

The driver’s door of the Fortuner opened.

The father stepped out, breathing hard. His hands were still shaking from gripping the steering wheel.

"Are you okay?" Adrian asked, eyes still moving, not fixed on the man.

"Yes... yes," the father said, voice uneven. "My wife—"

The passenger door opened. The mother stepped out with the baby. The little girl followed, clutching the door frame before stepping onto the road.

"We’re okay," the mother said. "It didn’t get through."

Adrian walked closer to the SUV and looked at the roof.

Four deep puncture holes had torn through the metal. The surface around them was caved in from repeated pecks. Paint had been scraped away, exposing bare steel.

"If it hit harder, it would’ve gone through," the father muttered.

Adrian didn’t answer.

He stepped onto the side step and ran his fingers around one of the holes. The metal edges were bent inward.

That monster was strong.

The little girl looked up at him. "What was that?"

He met her eyes for a second, then looked away.

"Something infected," he said. "Different from the zombies I guess but we can’t stay here any longer. Where are you heading anyways?"

"We are heading towards Okada, I have a daughter there who is trapped in her room."

"Wa...wait, you are saying you are heading towards Okada Hotel to rescue your daughter, and you brought your family along with you?" Adrian tilted his head to the side, realizing that his plan was reckless, bringing his family to danger.

"I can’t leave my family behind," the father said, voice firm now. "If something happens to them while I’m gone, I won’t forgive myself. We move together."

Adrian stared at him for a second.

On the ground, that made sense.

Up here, with things diving from the sky, it sounded different.

"Okada is north-west from here," Adrian said. "You’ll have to loop back through city roads. That’s heavy traffic zones."

"I know," the father answered. "But my eldest is there. She called last night. She locked herself in a room. She said people were turning in the casino floor."

The mother tightened her grip on the baby.

"Look, as heroic as it may sound, it’s impossible that you can save your daughter out of that hotel, especially with your family tagging alone. It can end up with all of you being killed in the process."

"Then what do you suggest we do?" the father asked, his tone growing a bit tight as if angry.

Adrian looked at him, then at the mother, then at the little girl holding onto her father’s leg.

He didn’t answer right away.

Okada.

That wasn’t some small house in a subdivision. That was a massive complex. Casino floors. Hotel towers. Multiple entrances. Tight interiors.

High-risk.

High infected density. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

He ran the numbers in his head.

Four survivors already gave him 1,800 points.

If there was another daughter alive inside that hotel...

That would be another rescue bonus, and it seems that when he rescued somebody, the points differ, as if the dangerous the event, the more points he received.

And the more points he received, coupled with killing the zombies, the more he could use his gacha system.

"You can’t do it alone," Adrian said finally. "That’s the reality."

The father didn’t argue.

"With just a knife and a dead SUV? You won’t even make it past the lobby. You witnessed how fast those zombies are."

The man’s jaw tightened, but he knew it was true.

The mother looked at Adrian carefully. "What are you saying?"

"I’m saying," he said calmly, "I can help."

The father blinked. "Help... us?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian shrugged lightly. "You’ve got another kid trapped. I’m armed. I can move fast. I already cleared a ramp for you. It makes sense to finish what we started."

The father searched his face.

"This isn’t charity," Adrian added. "If we do this, you follow my lead. But we have to secure your family first, get them to a safe place before we head to Okada."

"We have a condo not far from Okada, we can use it to leave my wife and children there. But...just like other places, it’s infested with zombies."

Ah, this family is so rich.

"Where is that?"

"Bayshore Residential Resort 1," the father replied. "It’s only 2.5 kilometers away from Okada."

"Good, then we’ll head there."

"Really you are going to help us?"

Adrian nodded his head in confirmation. The Gacha System had helped him the moment he received it. Without it, he would probably be stuck in that building, and die from starvation.

He is blessed so he won’t be selfish about it. Of course there are certain risks, but in this world, risk is normal. If you are afraid to die, you won’t last a day.

"Of course, it’s only natural to help one another in this crisis," Adrian explained. "So, we should get moving now."
