Chapter 61: Chapter 59: Mia Grant Is Missing

It was precisely because her first impression of Yates Donovan after transmigrating into the book had been pretty good that she’d decided to pin all her hopes on her fiancé.

In the original novel, Yates Donovan was described as a fickle playboy.

She had thought he was different from his description in the book. At the very least, from her interactions with him, he seemed quite reliable.

Who knew that not long after she started to see him in a new light, he would suddenly show up at her door to break off their engagement...

Cutting off all her escape routes.

Perhaps he had a change of heart after he saw Serena Grant.

Thinking about it, that did fit his character profile.

’There’s nothing to be angry about.’

It’s just that she was very, very, *very* good at holding a grudge.

Right now, she had no desire to put on a pleasant face for Yates Donovan.

Seeing the light flicker in her eyes, as if she were caught in a vortex of memories, Yates Donovan guessed he must be the only correct answer among the three.

He couldn’t speak for other things, but the one thing he could guarantee was that Mia Grant would definitely be happier with him than with anyone else.

Because he had never tried to restrict her actions.

If she was happy, she could stay. If she wasn’t, she could leave.

It had always been that way.

Around others, she was the passive one, always cautiously trying to please them.

With him, she could always be herself.

The emotions in Mia Grant’s eyes shifted unpredictably, and she quickly pulled herself from the warmth of the past to shoot him a fierce glare.

"Why do I have to choose one of you three?"

"All three of you are the same to me."

The smile in Yates Donovan’s eyes vanished instantly. He studied the girl across from him, confused.

’That’s not how she was looking at me a moment ago.’

’How did she suddenly start looking at me like I’m her mortal enemy?’

’This mood swing is a little too fast, isn’t it?’

"How is that possible?"

He didn’t believe it.

Mia Grant snorted and said instinctively, "Believe it or not, you’re all the same to me."

’Equally annoying.’

Yates Donovan crossed his arms, trying to reflect on himself. ’But could a person as perfect and flawless as me really have any shortcomings?’

’Of course not.’

’Isn’t that right?’

Unable to find a reason, he decided to just assume Mia Grant was being stubborn.

After all, the look in her eyes at the beginning hadn’t been a lie.

"Whatever," he shrugged. "If that’s what you really think, then I’d say you need to get your eyes checked."

"This is your problem, definitely not mine."

Mia Grant: "..."

"You really never get bogged down by introspection, do you," she said, laughing in exasperation.

She finally understood why Yates Donovan and Kian Keller were the same age, yet Yates gave off a much younger impression.

It wasn’t just because Yates Donovan had a childish air about him and loved to have fun.

More importantly, his mentality was exceptionally "healthy."

He seemed to live by the principle of "Why blame yourself when you can blame someone else?" and never wasted energy on introspection.

’His mental state is truly something to behold,’ she had to admit.

Yates Donovan was about to say something more when a knock came from the hospital room door. Peering through the glass pane on the door, he jerked his chin, signaling for his subordinate to enter.

Mia Grant moved to the side to make way. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"What is it?"

The subordinate nodded a greeting to Mia Grant before turning to Yates Donovan. "There’s news about Mr. Grant..."

Yates Donovan raised an eyebrow. "Go on. Besides the half-cripple on the bed, there are no outsiders here."

"My fiancée. You know her."

Mia Grant was too tired to even retort.

’I can’t be bothered to correct him again. Whatever, let him say what he wants.’

"Mr. Grant just left the Grant family residence and is on his way to the hospital."

"The Grant residence?" Mia Grant turned to Yates Donovan, frowning. "Didn’t you say he was waiting to ambush me at school?"

"Ah." Yates Donovan thought for a moment. He did seem to recall saying that. "I remembered wrong."

"You..."

He complied smoothly. "I apologize."

"..."

His single sentence stopped the curse words on the tip of Mia Grant’s tongue.

"Let’s go." Yates Donovan stood up straight and held out his hand to her. "He’s here. If we don’t run now, it’ll be too late."

Mia Grant furrowed her brow and glanced back at Hayes Hughes on the bed.

"Don’t worry, this is Hayes Hughes’s turf. No one’s going to die here."

’A broken leg, at most.’

Mia Grant averted her gaze, glancing down at the hand he held out in front of her. Yates Donovan wiggled his fingers, inviting her to take it.

She rolled her eyes, smacked his "paw" away, and pulled open the door, walking out without a backward glance.

A crisp SMACK echoed in the hospital room for a long time.

The subordinate sucked in a sharp breath, lowering his head and staring at the floor, not daring to even breathe.

Yates Donovan, however, was unfazed. He casually stuffed his hand back into his pocket and sighed. "See? You’ve gotta find a wife with a fiery temper. Life gets so much more interesting."

The subordinate: "..."

’You don’t have to force an excuse to save face, you know. I can pretend I didn’t see anything.’

Before leaving, Yates Donovan glanced back at the man on the hospital bed, his eyes darkening.

"It’d be great if we could poison him mute."

"That mouth of his... it’s much more effective than mine."

’He sweet-talked Mia Grant until she was overjoyed.’

’Can’t kill him, but making him mute isn’t out of the question.’

The subordinate took the hint and whispered, "I can ask someone to take care of it."

"Take care of it?" Yates Donovan looked at him, feigning confusion. "I’ve only been out of the country for two months. Is that sort of thing not illegal here anymore?"

"...You’re worried about that?"

"What else?" Yates Donovan’s chest shook with laughter. "I’m a good, law-abiding citizen."

He sighed, then ambled out, leaving one last comment behind: "I can’t get a criminal record. What if it affects my daughter’s chances of becoming a civil servant?"

"..."

"Daughter? What daughter?" Mia Grant was waiting for the elevator when she heard his voice drift over from a distance.

Yates Donovan came to a stop beside her. He didn’t say anything, just looked at her and smiled.

His smile made Mia Grant’s heart race. She took a step back. ’Is he nuts?’

"What are you doing?"

In an instant, countless possibilities flashed through her mind.

’That damn pervert, Yates Donovan, doesn’t have some kind of weird fetish, does he?’

Her eyes filled with disdain. She was immensely grateful that he hadn’t been on the boat back then and hadn’t seen her jump into the sea.

’If he also had a "villainy meter," then she...’ She sucked in a sharp breath.

"What’s on your mind?"

Mia Grant rubbed her arms.

"You want to hear?" Yates Donovan stepped into the elevator first. "Never mind. If I say it, I’m afraid you’ll hit me again."

Mia Grant: "..." ’Okay, that confirms it. He really does have a weird fetish.’

"Aren’t you coming?"

She was still standing outside the elevator.

Mia Grant glanced around. "I need to use the restroom."

"Why didn’t you go when we were in the hospital room?"

"Weren’t you pestering me the whole time?"

Yates Donovan looked her up and down, then stepped out of the elevator. "Let’s go."

"You’re coming with me?" Mia Grant’s eyes widened.

Yates Donovan was forced to stop and look back at her, wondering why she wasn’t following.

"Don’t you young girls all like to go to the bathroom hand-in-hand?"

’Is there a problem with that?’

Outside the restroom, Yates Donovan wasn’t so perverted as to actually follow her inside.

He lit a cigarette outside. He finished it, but no one had come out yet.

’Did she fall in?’

He waved down a cleaning lady. "Excuse me, could you please go in and check for me? My fiancée went in a long time ago."

Two minutes later, the cleaning lady came out.

Yates Donovan stood up straight.

He heard the cleaner say, "There’s no one in there. Are you sure your fiancée is inside?"
