I Can Talk to the Internal Organs-Chapter 135 - 110: Falling Asleep...
The sincerity of Lu Jiu made Wang Mengfei let down her guard, and finally, there was no resistance in her words.
She also hoped that she could recover, that she wouldn’t have to take medication daily like a strange person, and wouldn’t have to fear when her emotions would erupt every day.
However, after seeing so many doctors, not a single one told her that depression is curable, only that it can be controlled through long-term medication.
Now, Lu Jiu told her it was possible.
For some reason, she chose to believe it in her heart.
She was an extremely sensitive person at heart, able to carefully analyze and interpret others’ expressions and glances. So for many who seemed outwardly amicable but harbored ulterior motives, just staring at their eyes for a while was enough for her to roughly judge whether they were worth interacting with.
In Lu Jiu’s eyes, Wang Mengfei only saw sincerity.
This feeling was indeed very subjective and not necessarily correct, but Wang Mengfei didn’t care. She just felt that the doctor in front of her wouldn’t deceive her, and even if he did, she was willing to accept it.
"Depression, or melancholy, is a normal human emotion, it has never been a disease. For example, when a loved one passes away, anyone would fall into a period of depression. Does that make him a depression patient too? The notion of anti-depressant medication itself is flawed; emotions need to be vented, not suppressed."
"Depression means emotions can’t be released, and there’s too much accumulated inside. And why is there so much accumulation, and why can’t emotions be released? It’s simple, poor sleep!"
"When we rest, our body is processing the emotions, memories, and physical fatigue accumulated throughout the day. If we haven’t rested well, it means the body hasn’t had the time to process these things. Long-term insomnia will lead to these piling up inside, gradually becoming a burden."
"So, the root of depression doesn’t lie in the emotion itself; it’s merely an expression, a dynamic symptom that changes constantly. The primary cause is insomnia, which has both internal and external causes, but ultimately it’s internal."
"Regardless of how outside pressures are relieved, the true cause of excessive emotions is always oneself. Of course, once caught in the vicious cycle of insomnia, you can’t control your body and emotions. This indeed requires external help, and traditional Chinese medicine is quite skilled in treating insomnia."
"Now, do you still think this illness can’t be treated?"
With a smile, Lu Jiu quietly explained to Wang Mengfei what depression really is.
In his view, so-called depression, mania, schizophrenia, and others were all caused by excessive emotions. Simply identifying numerous disease names wasn’t meaningful beyond confounding patients.
After all, the medications developed for these named diseases haven’t truly cured anyone. What purpose do they serve other than making more money?
This understanding of emotional illnesses is a new perspective after advancing in Basic TCM Diagnosis. Hence, he realized that all diseases caused by excessive emotions have one root: insomnia.
The root cause of insomnia lies in the heart, due to the failure to nurture the spirit.
Identifying this root, Lu Jiu wouldn’t be misled by disease names or symptoms when treating these conditions.
He only needed to restore the patient’s spirit so they could sleep normally, thus alleviating more than half of the illness.
Compared to using medication for catharsis, a patient’s Five Viscera have a clear advantage. Treating insomnia essentially provides time for the Five Viscera to repair the body, achieving twice the result with half the effort.
"Doctor, I trust you, and thank you." Wang Mengfei said cautiously.
"You’re welcome. Let me talk about my treatment plan. How long have you been on medication?" Lu Jiu asked.
"I took sleeping pills for three to four years previously. Recently, the condition worsened, and I was diagnosed with moderate depression at the hospital half a year ago, so I started taking medication." Wang Mengfei replied.
"Well, the medication duration isn’t too long. You can stop all medication for now. I’ll use acupuncture and Chinese herbs to treat you, maybe just a couple of days. Once your sleep normalizes, the depression will greatly alleviate." Lu Jiu said.
Wang Mengfei nodded, "Much appreciated."
"You’re welcome," Lu Jiu replied.
Seeing this, Wang Dingxu smiled.
Lu Jiu then took the finest needle from the drawer and began acupuncture treatment for Wang Mengfei.
"Hand, please," Lu Jiu said.
Wang Mengfei extended her hand, while Lu Jiu grasped her palm and inserted a needle at the Divine Gate point, then used the Heaven-Piercing Cool Needle Technique.
Completing the left hand, he then worked on the right one, employing the same technique, still Heaven-Piercing Cool.
"Now, extend your foot here," Lu Jiu said, pulling over a stool.
Seeing this, Wang Mengfei lifted her leg onto the stool, while Lu Jiu rolled up her pant leg slightly, then pulled her sock down a bit.
Revealed was the Fu Liu point, located about three finger widths above the peak of the ankle and the posterior border of the Achilles tendon.
For this needle into Fu Liu, Lu Jiu didn’t use Heaven-Piercing Cool but rather opted for Mountain Burning Fire.
The choice of different techniques at these two acupoints is because dispersing Divine Gate and tonifying Fu Liu can harmonize the patient’s heart and kidney.
Harmonizing the heart and kidney allows Heart Fire to leverage the power of Kidney Water, as the kidney governs storage. With the aid of Kidney Water, Heart Fire can capture the lost spirit, guiding it back smoothly.
Kidney Water can also benefit from Heart Fire, continually strengthening its Kidney Essence with the help of the Spleen and Stomach processing grains and fluids, thus consistently supporting Heart Fire.
After establishing this cycle, the Five Viscera can function perpetually and effectively.
Of course, acupuncture alone is not enough.
Moxibustion is needed as well.
The point Lu Jiu would moxibust is called San Mao point.
This is a unique point on the first joint of the big toe, not on the nail but the skin.
Moxibustion on San Mao point is specifically for treating insomnia, with strong efficacy. Usually, unless the insomnia is particularly severe, the patient might fall asleep right during moxibustion on this point.
"Alright, acupuncture ends here. Next is Moxibustion. Lie on that small bed there and take off your shoes and socks," Lu Jiu said.
"Mhm," Wang Mengfei complied.
Lu Jiu then fetched a clove of garlic from the medicine cabinet, peeled and pounded it into a paste, rolled up some mugwort, and slowly approached Wang Mengfei.
Lu Jiu lifted her knee, letting the soles of her feet touch the bed, placed the garlic paste on her big toe, and then put the mugwort on the salt before lighting it with fire.
As a wisp of blue smoke rose, the heat of the mugwort carried with the characteristics of the garlic permeated Wang Mengfei’s body.
Garlic, being pungent, enters the lungs. Garlic Moxibustion not only treats insomnia but also regulates Wang Mengfei’s excessive anxiety.
As time passed, and Lu Jiu replaced the mugwort for the third time, Wang Mengfei, lying on the small bed, suddenly started to feel her eyelids getting heavy, her entire body relaxing, her consciousness gradually blurring, until, after ten odd seconds, her eyes finally closed slowly...
