Chapter 21: Truck ( 1/2 )

After successfully taking care of the zombie horde, the group began introducing themselves to one another — and Dorian got to learn about the odd build-up of the team that he had not noticed earlier.

James and Jeffrey were the only easily noticed twins in the group due to their striking similarities in looks. However, aside from them, the two other melee class users were twins and the three mages were triplets!

"A group with only twins, what are the odds," Dorian muttered to himself.

Around him, his teammates shook hands and introduced themselves to the other team while peppering each other with questions about their journey so far and, of course, about their respective aspects.

"I received a unique hand axe that gains its own EXP and levels up," James explained briefly about his weapon to Brandon and Milan, who looked extremely interested.

"I got a simple great sword, but according to the system, once I reach level ten, the sword will experience its first upgrade and I might even receive a new swordsman skill with a special boost. I really hope it brings an added boost with agility because a true swordsman needs speed instead of strength..."

Jeffrey, on the other hand, went on for minutes introducing himself and his weapon. After he finished, he started recounting stories of his own awesomeness and even began to ask if any of them had ever watched his favorite anime. His genuine nerdiness and talkative nature were quickly established in Dorian's and everyone else's minds.

James wore an ugly frown as he listened to his brother. He yelled at him to shut the hell up.

Dorian quickly noted in his head the difference between the two brothers before proceeding to speak with James, who naturally acted as the leader of the group.

Both of them discussed various issues, and James revealed that the reason they had come to the north gate was to search for food trucks.

He explained to Rowan how the school's food supply always arrive on Thursday's afternoon and yesterday was Thursday; however, the apocalypse had caused great change and the food trucks didn't arrive on time.

He mentioned that he had planned to check the four gates of the school, but Jeffrey asked them to visit the north gate first which was the most dangerous of the four.

Hearing these, Dorian wondered how James came by all this knowledge and asked.

"The food prefect was my close buddy, so yeah," he replied.

"That is great then.." Dorian responded.

If they could get their hands on that food supply, then there would be no fear of starving before the first trial ended.

While both of them were deep in discussion, Jeffrey—who had finished summarizing his life to the others—arrived and extended his hand to shake Dorian's.

Dorian accepted his handshake with a smile.

"You are the leader of your group, right?" Jeffrey asked.

"Yeah, why do you ask?"

"Haha, no wonder you acted selfless and let that young lady steal your EXP. I thought it was either that or she is your girlfriend, or maybe a combination of both?" Jeffrey laughed heartily.

Dorian could not tell him that the actual reason he helped Clarissa was due to her class, so he simply confirmed Jeffrey's assumption.

Meanwhile, James went off to inform the other members of Dorian's team about the food trucks, and they immediately agreed to help.

After making up their minds, they began strolling toward the north gate, walking through a bloodied battlefield littered with hundreds of zombie corpses.

Naturally, such scenes would have made them nauseous; however, they had already grown accustomed to witnessing similar sights, and thus they remained unfazed.

Dorian and the team made their way to the other side of the northern gate and were greeted by chaotic, disordered scenes. There were numerous car accidents that had occurred yesterday after drivers either turned or fled when the apocalypse began, with fumes still oozing from some of the burnt cars. There were even some vehicles that had collided with nearby buildings, resulting in double damage to both the car and the structure.

There were even a few zombies staggering aimlessly in different directions.

"This is my first time leaving the environment of the academy in two years now," Dorian muttered to himself as he observed the chaotic street.

Since he had no family to run to, during the holidays he always stayed behind in the dormitory, using his free time to binge-read exciting fantasy novels and comics.

On the other hand, the other students lamented how drastically the streets had transformed from a gentle place they once knew to something straight out of a horror fantasy movie. They all wore saddened expressions as they observed the scenes — of course — except Jeffrey.

"Exactly as those novels described: dark and bloodied with the heavy metallic stench of blood and sorrow..."

Jeffrey began speaking passionately about the novels he had read and how scenes like this were permanently imprinted in his mind. He was so enthusiastic as he spoke, unknowingly painting an even worse image of himself in the minds of the others.

Even Dorian, who had been considered a nerd before the apocalypse, felt disappointed.

"There is no way someone can be this nerdy," he thought, "Maybe nerds are just different when they're born rich, unlike low-life peeps like myself who have to hide our love for literature in fear of being bullied for it."

"Look over there, three trucks with the same design as the ones bringing the food supplies," James interjected, drawing the attention of the other students as he pointed toward the destroyed factory, a few meters away three trucks could be seen parked closely beside each other.

A relieved expression appeared on everyone's faces as they began strolling towards the food trucks. Few wandering zombies spotted them and attacked but they slayed them without stress.

Reaching the food trucks, they realized something was wrong somewhere as they could hear noise coming from within the trucks.

"Zombies inside a food truck? That is not even possible," Dorian muttered.

"What might those noise be coming from?" The other students wondered aloud.

Jeffrey grabbed his sword and strolled to the back of the truck, James, Dorian and a few students followed closely behind them.

Jeffrey lifted his sword and slashed at the locks of the door severally before it opened.

"What the heck..."

The scene inside resulted in collective gasps of surprise.
