Chapter 184: The Secret Passage (1)

To be honest, it still felt a little strange for Roxanna to think that a dog could suddenly become a human—or more accurately, a half-human, half-animal—and then become her husband.

But when she thought about it more carefully, having a husband who was a normal human didn’t mean her life would be better.

After all... her life had been a complete nightmare when she was married to Leon, a perfectly normal human.

He had been reborn as a beastman, so that meant she couldn’t see him as just a dog anymore!

"Cough... cough..."

Azul suddenly coughed loudly after being ignored for so long. At this point, he wasn’t even sure if the two of them still remembered that he had been standing beside them the entire time.

"I’m still not sure what exactly is going on," Azul said dryly. "Even though I know this is supposed to be a touching moment. But unfortunately... I think we have a bigger problem right now."

"Woof! Woof!"

Mr. Fenrir barked loudly as well. He even grabbed the back of Calen’s clothes with his teeth, as if he was telling him to stop being so affectionate with Roxanna.

Roxanna was about to question their strange behavior, but she suddenly stopped when she felt the underground shelter starting to shake.

"Woof!"

Mr. Fenrir immediately ran deeper into the shelter, heading toward the room where Roxanna used to stay when Leon locked her inside.

"I think... we should follow him," Roxanna said quickly. She let go of Calen’s embrace and stood up right away.

Actually, she still wanted to process everything she had just learned, especially about the missing memories in her mind. Unfortunately, the underground shelter felt like it might collapse at any moment.

"Come on, get up." Azul grabbed Calen with one hand and pulled him up, forcing him out of his thoughts.

As the ground beneath their feet shook even harder and the ceiling above their heads began to crack, they immediately started running to chase after Mr. Fenrir.

The small room—Roxanna’s old bedroom—was located at the very end of the shelter. Near the entrance were several dusty wooden crates that once stored beer and wine.

Roxanna’s eyes landed on the empty beer bottles. She stared at them for a few seconds as a bitter memory rose in her mind.

[Damn it... those beers remind me how annoying Leon and Lisa were back then.]

[I was the one who collected those beers and wines so I could drink them during the apocalypse, but those bastards...]

Roxanna clenched her teeth. [They didn’t even let me touch a single bottle and they always drank them right in front of me on purpose.]

No matter how many times she tried not to think about it, Roxanna’s heart still burned with anger whenever she remembered all the cruel things they had done to her.

Fortunately, she would never have to see their faces again or—actually, she didn’t know what she would do if she did.

She hated them that much, but she wasn’t sure if she could really kill someone. Even after transmigrating into this primitive world, she had never killed anyone before.

But that was something she could think about later. Right now, the only thing that mattered was finding a way to escape this place.

The moment Roxanna followed Mr. Fenrir into the room, she saw the large dog standing quietly in front of her bed.

"Why are you just standing here?" Azul asked. He even tapped Mr. Fenrir’s head a few times with his finger. "Come on, show us the way out."

Mr. Fenrir suddenly started scratching the floor under the bed, making a digging motion. At the same time, he barked again and again.

"Calen, what is he saying?" Roxanna asked softly.

"He wants us to lift this bed," Calen replied after hearing Mr. Fenrir’s voice in his mind. "He said the way out is under there."

As soon as he said that, Azul lifted the bed without hesitation and leaned it against the wall. At that moment, they finally saw a wooden door hidden under the bed.

"That’s strange..." Roxanna murmured while tilting her head slightly. "I don’t remember there being something like this under my bed before."

"Woof! Woof!"

Calen listened for a moment before explaining, "Mr. Fenrir said this place isn’t exactly the same as the real world. Some things here appeared later."

A moment later, Mr. Fenrir struck the wooden door several times with his front paw.

Bang! Bang!

The door finally opened, revealing a vertical ladder that led deep into the darkness below.

"Woof!"

"He said—hey!" Calen suddenly widened his eyes when Mr. Fenrir jumped down without hesitation.

"Do we have to jump too?" Roxanna asked in confusion. She even leaned forward as if she was about to follow the dog, but Calen quickly grabbed her hand.

"No! We’re not jumping like him!" he said loudly before quickly lowering his voice because he realized he shouldn’t shout in front of Roxanna. "Mr. Fenrir said we should climb down using the ladder."

"I’ll go down first," Azul said.

However, before he could move closer, Calen had already stepped toward the opening.

"This is my unconscious mind," he said calmly. "So it makes sense that I go first."

Roxanna then stared down into the hole as he descended it.

[It looks scary...]

The ladder disappeared into complete darkness. She wasn’t even sure if her night vision would work in a place that dark.

"Roxanna." Azul called her name gently.

When she turned to look at him, he tied her wrist to his with a short rope he had found near a small cabinet.

"We can use this so we won’t get separated," he said.

[This rope...] Roxanna fell silent for a moment as she looked at the short rope.

[I originally brought this rope to use as a clothesline...] She took a deep breath. [...but at one point, I thought about using it for something else.]

Even though she didn’t mind sleeping in a small room like that, there were times when she felt completely exhausted from a life that was filled with torment and fear.
