Chapter 140: Behind the Skull Masks

"T-The kidnappers are back!" Roxanna shouted.

She wanted to step back, but Cyrus immediately grabbed her hand. "No, no, it’s alright. They didn’t mean any harm when they captured you earlier. Actually, they wanted to save you and Luan."

The people wearing skull masks behind Cyrus didn’t say anything or make any sudden movements, as if they didn’t want to scare the frightened little fox.

"Saved us?" Roxanna asked in confusion. She glanced back and forth between the masked people and Cyrus. "From what?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Cyrus answered patiently, "They’ve lived in these mountains for a long time. They can tell when a snowstorm is about to come."

"That’s why they took you and Luan away," he continued. "They knew the storm would arrive soon. If they hadn’t made you fall asleep, you might have been trapped in the storm... or even buried in an avalanche."

Roxanna fell silent for a moment because she hadn’t expected those scary-looking people to actually be kind.

[I really shouldn’t judge people by their looks alone!] Roxanna scolded herself in her mind. [Just because they look scary doesn’t mean they’ll do something sca—WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!]

Roxanna widened her eyes and jumped out of Cyrus’s arms when she saw a group of deer beastmen dragging a huge gray fish covered in hard scales.

The front of the fish’s head even looked like a sharp sword, making it look more like a weapon than a fish. If Roxanna ever met that kind of fish in the water, she would probably choose to choke herself to death rather than try to swim away!

But forget about the fish for a moment—how did those deer beastmen even catch something THAT BIG?!

It was huge, so huge. It was almost as big as three tall men like Calen standing together.

Those deer beastmen were terrifying!

"Roxanna!" Luan shouted when he saw her standing. His voice was full of shock and relief. "You’re awake?!"

Roxanna opened her mouth to answer, but before she could say anything, Luan was already running toward her as fast as he could.

Luan rushed forward and wrapped her in a tight hug, holding her so close that she almost couldn’t breathe. It was as if he was afraid that if he let go, she would disappear again.

"Luan... Luan..." Roxanna gently patted his back, trying to calm him down. It was her quiet way of telling him to loosen his arms a little. "I’m fine, Luan. I’m really fine."

Slowly, he relaxed his grip, but he still didn’t let her go completely. He knew that nothing bad had happened to her because after all, he had woken up before she did.

He had seen that she was safe, and yet... when those people suddenly appeared and took her away, fear filled his heart. At that moment, he couldn’t think clearly, and he thought they would do bad things to his wife.

When he woke up, Luan had even become hysterical and tried desperately to look for Roxanna. The only reason he was able to calm down was because Cyrus comforted him.

Therefore, now that he was finally able to hold her in his arms, Luan felt an overwhelming sense of relief. He took a deep breath and breathed in the sweet scent of her body.

"I was just afraid of losing you," Luan said. "We’re lucky they aren’t bad people."

If they had been bad people, Luan would have blamed himself, because he had been too weak to protect his wife.

He had even thought that he should train his stamina harder from now on, so that some damn green powder wouldn’t be able to knock him out so easily.

"Miss Fox, I’m really sorry for scaring you earlier."

Roxanna immediately let go of Luan when she heard a man’s voice speaking beside her.

She almost jumped back in shock, because the first thing she saw when she turned to the right was a skull mask with glowing red eyes.

Unlike the others, this skull mask looked a little different. It had branches on top of it, making it look like a crown.

Roxanna could tell that he seemed to be the leader of the deer tribe, and that he had also gone with Luan earlier to fetch water and... catch that BIG FISH.

"No, no, no," Roxanna said quickly. She gently pushed Luan to the side so she could face the leader properly. "You don’t need to apologize," she said sincerely. "If anything, I should be the one saying sorry. I thought you wanted to hurt us."

She felt a little embarrassed as she spoke, then she turned to look at Cyrus. "I even thought you had kidnapped my Cyrus," she admitted. "It turns out I completely misunderstood you."

The leader smiled softly behind his mask. "I understand," he said in a calm, gentle voice. It was so gentle that Roxanna almost felt like he was made of soft cotton.

"Anyone would be scared if people wearing scary masks suddenly walked toward them," he added gently. "But we also wear these masks to protect ourselves."

Roxanna almost asked what kind of protection he meant, but she stopped because there was something more important on her mind.

She took a small breath and spoke carefully.

"I know you don’t mean any harm," she said politely. "But... I still don’t understand why you went so far just to save us."

She hesitated for a moment, afraid her words might sound rude. "Please don’t be offended," she added quickly. "I’m not blaming you. I’m just... really confused."

They had carried Cyrus all the way to the mountain peak, then they had rushed to save her and Luan before the storm came.

They had risked their own safety for people they barely knew, and that wasn’t something normal.

It wasn’t that she was ungrateful, but in her previous world, nothing was ever free.

Every kindness had a price, every favor had a cost, and she had learned that lesson the hard way.

So even now, even after being saved, she couldn’t help but wonder—What would she have to give in return?
