Chapter 139: Scary Masks

"If Cyrus was really taken by a demon beast, then that thing must be very strong," Luan said through heavy breaths. "It can move so fast in a place like this."

The snowy terrain in front of them was not only slippery but also very steep, so Luan had to be careful, or he might accidentally cause another avalanche.

"But as far as I know him, I don’t think he’s someone who can be killed easily." Luan planted his ice axe into the ground every time he climbed up the slope that was almost like a cliff. "Let’s just hope he didn’t pass out on the way, because that would be very bad."

Roxanna, still in her fox form, was tied safely to his back. She kept rubbing her small head against his cheek whenever his body tensed up or whenever he felt frustrated while climbing the slippery cliff. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Even though she couldn’t help much with climbing, she was doing her best to support him in her own way, and somehow... it worked. Every time she rubbed her head against his cheek or stayed close to him, Luan felt his mood lift a little.

After climbing for hours, Luan finally saw the mountain peak. It shone under the sunlight, glittering like gold.

For a moment, he almost forgot how tired he was. He stopped for a moment to catch his breath. Normally, he wasn’t someone who got tired easily, but the combination of being buried in snow and walking such a long distance was truly exhausting.

"I think... we’re almost there," he murmured softly.

He tightened his grip and prepared to climb again, but just as he was about to move, something fell from above. Several thick ropes, made from twisted roots, dropped down from the peak out of nowhere.

The ropes swayed in the cold wind, moving back and forth right in front of him. They brushed past his shoulders, and they creaked softly.

Luan froze, and for a second, he didn’t even breathe. His body tensed as his eyes quickly scanned their surroundings. "What?" he whispered.

Roxanna also held her breath. Her small body pressed closer to his back. She panicked because she didn’t know if whatever was at the other end of those ropes was a friend or an enemy.

But at this point, they were already very high up the mountain. Even if they wanted to go back down, it would be difficult, unless they chose to jump, and that definitely wouldn’t end well.

Before she could even think of the best way for them to escape, the ropes suddenly began to sway more violently, and something came down from above.

No, not something—people! People with small antlers on their heads!

[Are they deer beastkins? Shit! Shit! Why do they look so scary?!]

In her mind, Roxanna had imagined deer beastkins as friendly people who would look at others with gentle smiles and talked in soft voices.

But these people... they were far away from friendly.

All of them were wearing buffalo skull masks, and through the eye holes, Roxanna could see their glowing red eyes staring straight at them.

Instead of a group of friendly deer, they looked more like a tribe that ate other beastkins alive.

[Maybe we should just jump?!] Roxanna thought in panic. [But wait, wait—if we run away, what about Cyrus?! What will happen to him?! Have they already eaten him alive?!]

Before Roxanna could think any further, a group of deer beastkins had already reached them. They grabbed Luan’s arms, stopping him from escaping. One of them even pulled Roxanna away from him.

"Don’t touch her!" Luan shouted. "Don’t touch my wife!"

He struggled wildly and was about to lose control, but suddenly they threw green powder at Luan’s and Roxanna’s faces, making them lose consciousness in a second.

The moment Roxanna opened her eyes again, she faintly heard the sound of burning fire, and her body felt wrapped in a warmth that was hard to describe.

She blinked several times and saw that the ceiling above her looked like dark rocks, with stalactites hanging down.

Stalactites? Were they in a cave?

The last thing Roxanna remembered before losing consciousness was that she had been on Golden Mountain, on her way to look for Cyrus.

"Cyrus!" She suddenly sat up, like someone rising from the dead. Her eyes widened, and cold sweat covered her body.

"Yes?"

Roxanna turned her head to the side. At that moment, she met Cyrus’s eyes. He was sitting beside a campfire, looking comfortable and warm under a blanket made of sheep fur.

He was even casually roasting raw meat on a stick in his hand.

"Cyrus!" Roxanna shouted his name again. Without thinking, she rushed toward him and threw herself into his arms. "You’re alive!"

Cyrus set the meat aside so he could hug her back. He gently stroked her pink hair and said, "Yes, of course, I’m alive. Why wouldn’t I be?"

She buried her face into his shoulder and started crying. "I-I thought... I thought the deer beastkins took you away and ate you alive!" she sobbed. "Luan and I—LUAN! LUAN, WHERE IS HE?!"

She suddenly panicked and pulled away from Cyrus when she remembered that her other husband wasn’t nearby.

"Hey, hey, calm down." Cyrus held her face and gently stroked her cheeks. "Luan is fine. He’s just helping the others get some fresh water from the underground river."

Roxanna frowned. "W-What? Underground river? You mean..."

"Yes," Cyrus nodded. "The same underground river we passed before. It turns out the water comes from a magical spring on top of the mountain. It never runs dry, so the river can keep flowing."

Roxanna frowned in confusion. "What? We’re on top of the mountain? How? Isn’t this a cave?"

She asked so many questions, and just as she was about to ask more, her heart almost stopped when she saw a group of people wearing skull masks standing behind Cyrus.

"T-The kidnappers are back!" Roxanna shouted and pointed her finger at them.
