I Became the Eye Candy: Four Bigshots Claimed to be My Dad?-Chapter 97: A Lively Carriage
"The old master said that he’ll give the Gu family fortune to whoever can make you acknowledge him as your great-grandfather."
One moment, Ye Qianning was laughing at him for finally cracking, and the next, her face went pale.
’Has Old Man Gu gone senile? Is he really going to give away the family fortune over a little kid he’s only met twice?’
’Whatever his motives are, this kind of talk will cause me no end of trouble!’
Seeing that she still hadn’t reacted, Gu Shuo’s frown deepened. "Don’t you have anything to say?"
Ye Qianning was silent for a long moment before sighing out three words: "People are unpredictable."
’People are unpredictable?’
’What’s that supposed to mean?’
Gu Shuo could navigate the worlds of both business and high society with ease, typically able to discern a person’s thoughts from just a few words. Yet this child before him was completely inscrutable.
"What’s going on?" Xiang Minghou had returned.
"General, it’s Mr. Gu..."
Before the guard could finish, Xiang Minghou leaped onto the carriage.
"Gu Shuo, what do you think you’re doing?" Xiang Minghou demanded, his voice low.
"It’s nothing. I just wanted to know what’s so special about this little fatty to have caught the old master’s eye." Gu Shuo was as composed as ever.
"You’ll have to go back and ask Old Man Gu that," Xiang Minghou retorted. Then, remembering something, he added, "And what is the meaning of the Gu family blocking the gate to the General’s residence?"
"The same goes for you. You’ll have to ask the old master," Gu Shuo said as he moved to get out of the carriage.
"Gu Shuo, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Some things are best taken to the grave. Since you didn’t acknowledge it back then, you’d better not start now. And stay away from my daughter. Otherwise, you know the consequences."
Gu Shuo said nothing. He had just raised a hand to push open the carriage door when a figure blurred before him. Someone slammed into him, sending him stumbling back into the carriage. He let out a muffled grunt of pain as his back hit the rear panel.
A sudden thought made him look down frantically...
"Pangtuan—"
Xiang Minghou saw a blur of motion and reached out, but he was too late. He watched his own daughter roll swiftly to one side.
Ye Qianning, now lying on her side, had also gotten a fright. ’Good thing I’m agile,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, that oaf Gu Shuo would have flattened me into a pancake!’
Seeing that the child wasn’t underneath him, Gu Shuo let out a heavy sigh of relief.
He looked over and saw Ye Qianning standing in a corner of the divan, his expression a mixture of suspicion and surprise. He hadn’t seen whether she had just scrambled to her feet or had dodged him the very instant he fell.
’If it was the latter, then the child’s speed was terrifyingly fast.’
"Pangtuan, are you all right?" Xiang Minghou asked, a wave of fear washing over him in retrospect. If the girl hadn’t been so nimble, being crushed by the hundred-plus-pound Gu Shuo would have had unthinkable consequences.
"Dad, I’m fine." Ye Qianning straightened her clothes.
Once they saw she was truly unharmed, Xiang Minghou and Gu Shuo both turned to look at the person who had practically crashed into the carriage.
"Zhan Chi, are you insane?" Traces of anger flickered across Gu Shuo’s usually composed face.
"Gu Shuo, what do you want with the little fatty? Huh? Don’t you dare get any ideas about her, HIC..." Zhan Chi’s cheeks were crimson. He let out a drunken hiccup, and the heavy stench of alcohol instantly filled the carriage.
With a SNAP, Gu Shuo flicked open his folding fan and covered his nose, his expression one of utter disgust.
"Get out," Xiang Minghou roared.
"No way. My little girl is here, so I’m not going anywhere." Zhan Chi slurred between hiccups, his eyes glazed over. "Little fatty, come on. Come home with Dad."
As he spoke, he shouldered Gu Shuo aside and reached for Ye Qianning.
Ye Qianning frowned imperceptibly. ’Just how much Immortal’s Intoxication did he drink to get this wasted? He’s like a man who just crawled out of a wine vat.’
"Agh... That hurts!"
Before Zhan Chi’s hand could touch Ye Qianning, Xiang Minghou seized his wrist, his face livid with rage.
"That’s enough, Zhan Chi. Get out," Xiang Minghou said, grabbing his wrist and starting to drag him out.
