I Became the Eye Candy: Four Bigshots Claimed to be My Dad?-Chapter 15: The Prince Mansion Demands the Jade Pendant
Ye Qianning paused mid-bite of her pastry and looked up with a smile. "Why are you thanking me? It’s all thanks to Fourth Granny’s superb medical skills."
Princess Changyang took out a handkerchief and wiped the pastry crumbs from the corner of her mouth, then gently tapped the tip of her nose. "Don’t think I don’t know. You’re the one who cured Xiang’er’s rash, aren’t you?"
Ye Qianning was a little surprised. She’d been found out.
"After spending these past few days with you, I started to recall what happened during the diagnosis," Princess Changyang said slowly. "Fourth Granny was just following your lead. We were all so frantic with worry that we didn’t notice it then. You were the one who administered the needles to Xiang’er, weren’t you?"
At first, she hadn’t paid it any mind. Who would have thought a five- or six-year-old child could know medicine? But the more time they spent together, the more certain she became of her suspicion.
Ye Qianning rubbed her nose. ’It doesn’t matter who cured her, as long as the rash is gone. I can’t believe she’s still hung up on who did it.’
’Does this mean my cover is blown?’ 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Don’t worry, I have no ulterior motives," Princess Changyang said, pinching the girl’s chubby little cheek. "I’m simply grateful to you for curing Xiang’er."
"In that case, can Fourth Granny and I stay in the Prince Mansion for a few more days?" ’I can’t leave the Prince Mansion just yet,’ Ye Qianning thought. ’I have to get the Jade Pendant back first.’
"Of course you can." Then, as if recalling something, Princess Changyang asked, "I heard that you and Fourth Granny came to the Capital City to find a relative. It’s been several days, but it seems no one has come looking for you. I was wondering, which relative are you searching for?"
"My father," Ye Qianning answered honestly.
"Your father?"
Princess Changyang was somewhat surprised.
"Yes. The authorities said they’d already found my father. A few days ago, someone came and took the keepsake my mother gave me before she died. They said they needed it for identification. But it’s been many days now, and we haven’t heard anything from them, nor have they returned our Jade Pendant." Having said her piece, Ye Qianning lowered her head and took another bite of her pastry.
Hearing this, Princess Changyang felt there was more to the story. Normally, the authorities didn’t handle matters like finding relatives, and they certainly wouldn’t take a keepsake without returning it.
Ye Qianning secretly watched her expression. Seeing a flicker of suspicion, she quickly added, "Princess Consort, could you please help us get the Jade Pendant back? It’s okay if we can’t find my father, but that Jade Pendant is a final memento from my mother. I can’t lose it."
"I’ll have someone go to the authorities and inquire at once. If this is true, I will certainly see this through for you and get the Jade Pendant back." Princess Changyang then turned to her handmaiden. "Go, have the steward make a trip. He must demand an explanation from the authorities."
"Yes, Your Highness." The handmaiden withdrew.
"Thank you, Princess Consort," Ye Qianning said with a smile, tilting her little face upward.
’With the Prince Mansion involved, I refuse to believe that deadbeat dad of mine won’t show his face.’
"Think nothing of it. I wonder who could be so fortunate as to have a daughter as clever as you." Princess Changyang had grown very fond of Ye Qianning, perhaps because she was around the same age as her own daughter, and Xiang’er adored her.
Ye Qianning finished her pastry and wiped her small hands on her clothes. She heard the princess consort’s words but didn’t reply.
"Who did you learn medicine from at such a young age?" Princess Changyang asked, her curiosity piqued.
"An old man in my village. The village children get rashes often, so I just picked it up from watching him."
"To think the Imperial Physicians in the palace are less capable than a village doctor," Princess Changyang sighed to herself.
’The royal Imperial Physicians all claim to be incredibly skilled and act so high and mighty, but they’re useless when it really counts.’
’Xiang’er’s rash had appeared so suddenly, and the medicine prescribed by the Imperial Physician only made it worse. If Ye Qianning hadn’t treated her in time, her daughter’s entire body would likely be covered in festering sores by now.’
"But no one gets both of those rashes at the same time," Ye Qianning pointed out.
