"Write that we will eat and drink before we pick up the next stone," she said. "Put someone in charge of sleep. Make it an order. Men who decide to be heroes at night die as fools in the morning."
"Luna runs sleep," Kai said immediately.
Luna inclined her head, accepting the burden with the same calm she used to lift a sleeping child.
Thea cleared her throat. "I will walk the wall where no one thinks I will," she said. "Sometimes a sister’s eyes catch the thing a soldier’s eyes love too much to see."
"You will not lecture my men when they bleed," Kai said, almost smiling.
"I will only embarrass them after the danger passes and in private," Thea said. "Usually."
They stood then because sitting any longer would turn planning into superstition. They ate plain food and drank plain water, the way you do when taste must be sacrificed to tomorrow. Wolf put his chin on Kai’s knee and got two fingers behind the ear for his manners. Azhara fell asleep standing up and woke herself with a snort she tried to pretend had come from the wall.

Kai almost laughed. Of course. He had climbed out of a shell and thrown himself into killing and then into holding and had not paused to open his own door.
"Show me later," he said. "Not now."

"You will go into defense," she said, stating the thing so he would not have to pretend it was a choice he enjoyed.
"I will," he said. "We hatch what we can. We hold until they knock from the inside."
She nodded. "The eggs will listen. I will make the rooms ready. I will post nurse-drones at the pools and beat anyone who forgets to wash their hands."
He kissed her brow, because sometimes a king must be a husband so that a queen can be a queen.
They moved Miryam a bit into the corner of the room in the small hours, cocoon swaddled, carrying on a cradle of padded poles that Lirien had made with more tenderness than she would ever confess. The egg chamber took a little weight without complaint. The cocoon’s hum deepened as if happy to be under a warm stone. The nurse-drones sang under their breath, the old nursery song that has no words because words get in the way of listening.
Kai gave the last order of the night, the one that makes commanders sleep because their mind has a wall to lean against.
"We are not trying to win," he told the mountain. "We are trying to make tomorrow exist. The winning will come later if we are greedy and lucky and smart."
The mountain is stone. Stone does not answer. But something in the air felt like agreement.
He went to the ledge one last time before lying down for the small, dishonest sleep men snatch between alarms. Shadeclaw owned the mouth like a door with a personality. Silvershadow stood where he can see without being seen. Vexor sat and counted quietly and then stood again because captains do not earn the right to sit unless they have told someone else to sleep.
Mia and Thea had taken corners of the war hall, their bodies giving up little bits of fight to blankets. Yavri slept with her palm on the table again. Akayoroi drifted the corridor and turned her plates so their edges would not find anyone’s dreams. Luna lay down finally and closed her eyes because she had set others to sleep and must obey her own law.
Kai stretched on the rock and let it hold him. He did not take the Crown to bed. He did not deserve that comfort and did not need it.
