Chapter 727: Chapter 724: A Man’s Affairs (3)

Nathan Leafcastle lightly lifted his eyebrows. "Where do you live? Let me take you home."

"No need, I’ll take the subway."

Nathan Leafcastle glanced at her hands resting on her knees. "Are you sure... do you have your keys?"

A single sentence jolted her into realization.

In her haste to leave, she had left her bag in the private room—with her wallet, phone, keys... all her belongings inside.

"Then..." she hesitated slightly. "Can you lend me some money? For the subway."

"Vera!" Nathan Leafcastle frowned and gently gripped her shoulder. "Are you really cutting ties with me?"

Vera Wave lowered her head.

"I... I am too ashamed to face you."

Nathan Leafcastle furrowed his brow and retracted his hand.

"Let’s go back to the mansion."

"Brother Nathan..."

"I have something to say to you. After I’m done, if you still insist on leaving, I’ll have the driver take you."

Vera Wave bit her lip and said no more.

The car arrived at the Leafcastle mansion. The driver stopped, and Nathan Leafcastle and Vera Wave alighted from their respective sides.

Entering the living room and seeing Liliana Davis’s memorial portrait on the table, Vera Wave stopped in her tracks.

"I... I’d better not go in."

Nathan Leafcastle reached out, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her into the living room. He settled her on the sofa and poured a cup of hot water, placing it in front of her.

"Brother Nathan... I’m truly sorry!"

She lowered her face and apologized.

Although Liliana Davis’s death had been an accident, no matter how one looked at it, she was inevitably involved.

Nathan Leafcastle took a seat opposite her. "Do you really think I would believe you’re the murderer?"

Vera Wave kept her head down.

"I really did it."

If Nathan Leafcastle must hate someone, let him hate her, not Kris Cooper.

"When you lie, you always fidget with your clothes," Nathan Leafcastle bluntly exposed her falsehood. "I know you’re taking the blame for someone else."

"That’s not true!" Vera Wave lifted her head. "It really wasn’t Kris Cooper, Brother Nathan. You have to believe me, I really didn’t lie to you!"

"You’re still defending him even now?"

"I’m not defending him. What I’m saying is the truth."

"If he didn’t kill her, why did you turn yourself in?"

Vera Wave opened her mouth but could not find words to reply.

After a moment, she found her voice again.

"In any case, Kris really had nothing to do with this incident. I know you must be devastated about Auntie Davis’s passing. I’m sorry."

Having said that, she rose from the sofa.

"I’ll go now."

Nathan Leafcastle raised his hand, grasping her wrist.

"Vera, stay. Just like old times, let’s chat in the attic. Just for tonight, okay?"

His tone carried a hint of desolation, a pleading note.

Seeing his expression, she pressed her lips together and withdrew her hand from his grip.

"I’ll leave a little later then."

The man rose, leading her upstairs.

The two made their way to the attic. Nathan Leafcastle seated her on the tatami mat before going downstairs to fetch some fruit and drinks.

"I don’t drink."

He went downstairs again and brought her a glass of juice.

They sat on opposite sides of a low couch, separated by a small square table. Through the attic window, they could see the deep night outside.

"I remember when we were kids, we used to chat like this in the attic," Nathan Leafcastle said. "In the end, you always fell asleep, and I would carry you downstairs."

Vera Wave drew her knees to her chest and leaned against the attic window, gazing at the night outside. "If only we could have stayed young forever."

"Yeah, I often think so too."
