Chapter 441: Chapter 440: The Girl from Six Years Ago (44)

"Mine?" Vera asked.

"Yes!" he said with a laugh. "Didn’t you notice that a photograph was missing from your album?"

"You mean..." Vera stared at his face. "This photo... you took it from my album?"

"Very smart!" Kris Cooper gently stroked the photo in his wallet. "You looked so cute when you were a child, so I took it and put it in my wallet so I could see you anytime."

Since she had lost her memory, she certainly wouldn’t remember what photos were in the album. Kris had quickly fabricated this excuse to placate her.

Watching the man’s smiling face, Vera felt her heart clench as if pierced by a knife.

He’s lying! He’s lying to her! She’d seen this photo long before she ever met him. This isn’t her photo at all. He’s covering something up; he doesn’t want her to know the truth...

"I didn’t expect you to find out," Kris said, gently pinching her cheek. "If you don’t like this one, we can swap it. You can pick out a really pretty one yourself, okay?"

Vera lowered her face, avoiding his eyes. She feigned a yawn and rubbed her eyes, discreetly wiping away the tears she couldn’t hide. "I’m tired. Don’t you have a meeting tomorrow? I... Shall I see you out?"

"No need, you get some sleep." Kris straightened her pillow and blanket. "I’ll see myself out."

She nodded, her head still lowered.

He kissed her forehead, then stood up again and walked towards the door.

Reaching the doorway, he paused.

"If you don’t ask me to stay, I’m really going then?"

She struggled to suppress her emotions, lifted her face, and forced a smile at him.

"Goodnight."

"Goodnight!"

He smiled back at her, then stepped out of the room, gently closing the door behind him before striding down the stairs.

Listening to his fading footsteps, Vera sat on the edge of the bed, her small hands gripping the bedsheet tightly.

Crystal-clear tears slid down her cheeks, falling onto her new dress and shattering like tiny jewels.

「In the front yard.」

Kris called over Mrs. Feng and instructed her to accompany Vera to change her bandages the next morning, then walked out the main gate.

Once in the car, he immediately took out his wallet and pulled out Vera’s old photo.

Flipping the photo over and seeing the writing on the back, he heaved a long sigh of relief.

Thank goodness the girl didn’t see the words on the back; otherwise, he really wouldn’t have been able to explain it.

"Shall we go, Sir?" the driver asked from his seat.

Kris lifted the photo with the writing on it, carefully brushing off a speck of dust.

"Let’s go. Back home!"

The car started, drove out of the alley, and gradually disappeared into the distance.

「In the backyard.」

Vera slowly curled up against the headboard, grabbed a pillow to hug, and rested her chin on it.

Memories of the past few days with him flashed through her mind.

He kissed her the very first time they met and even paid her medical bills later.

On her first day at work, he came to her defense.

She was short on money; he gave her a hundred-million-dollar check.

...

In these past few days, what he had given her was the epitome of a man’s doting affection.

Her fingers unintentionally brushed against the wedding ring on her ring finger. Vera raised her left hand and gazed at the ring. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

She remembered that not long after they had met, he had mentioned marriage to her...

It seems Irene Spencer was right. This ring truly didn’t belong to her.
