I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 397: Nathan Leafcastle Reappears (5)
Early Saturday morning, Vera Wave headed to the airport. Upon arrival, she smoothly met up with Rowan Nichols and the others. Together, they boarded a flight to Yiwu and then took the crew’s bus to Eriwald Film City.
There was no time to enjoy the scenery. As the second lead, Vera rushed to join the crew and, after hastily eating a boxed meal, immediately went to change and get her makeup done.
Halfway through her makeup, Irene Spencer arrived leisurely, with Assistant Anabel Wilton accompanying her on-set. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Catching sight of the long-absent figure from the corner of her eye, Vera acted as if she hadn’t seen her, not turning her head an inch from her seat.
"Irene, have a seat!" Anabel Wilton pulled out a chair for Irene. Seeing Vera’s demeanor, Anabel twisted her mouth in disdain.
The makeup artist came over to prepare, chatting with Irene as she worked. "Irene, isn’t this dress a new style from Paris?"
Irene leaned back in her chair with a smile. "I just returned from France yesterday. I had a photoshoot and bought a few clothes on the side. Oh, that’s right... Anabel, distribute the cosmetics I brought back to everyone."
Anabel pulled some skincare products from her bag and handed them out. Irene picked up one of the boxes and offered it to Vera.
"Vera, this eye cream is for you. It’s very effective."
Vera didn’t accept it, only offering a lukewarm smile. "Thanks, Irene, but no thanks. I prefer not to take what I haven’t earned."
She despised people who acted one way in public and another in secret the most. And now Irene was trying to act like some saint? What was the point?!
Irene retracted the box of eye cream, still smiling. "You’re right. Our Vera is Mr. Cooper’s woman, after all. She’s probably been to Paris and who knows where else countless times. What kind of luxury goods hasn’t she seen? She certainly wouldn’t care for my little trinkets."
"Quite right." Sensing the sarcasm, Vera tilted her chin high, casually stretched out her left hand, showing off the engagement ring, and cockily flicked her nails. "My fiancé Kris may lack other things, but he certainly doesn’t lack money. Before I came, he even said he’d buy me anything I wanted."
HUMPH! Trying to shame her for marrying into wealth, huh? Well, she was going to be shamelessly ostentatious right back at her.
Her words almost made Irene choke with anger, yet she was unable to retort, her chest just heaving violently.
Catching Irene’s expression in the mirror, Vera chuckled.
Keep acting. Why stop now?!
The makeup artists nearby heard the blatant rivalry between the two but wisely kept silent, each focusing on their own work. These two women—one was a star, the other the fiancée of their wealthy benefactor—were not people they could afford to offend.
A short while later, after both actresses’ makeup was done, the makeup artists quickly found excuses to leave, getting as far away as possible to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
"Anabel, get me a glass of water!"
Having sent Anabel away, Irene faced the mirror, adjusted her hair, then rose from her chair and walked over to Vera’s side.
"As they say, ’Heaven watches what people do.’ Don’t think I don’t know who was behind that incident!"
Vera leaned back leisurely in her chair, removed the engagement ring from her finger, and carefully threaded it onto her necklace. She had to film soon, and wearing the ring would be out of place for her role.
"Exactly. People do things, and Heaven watches. As for payback? It’s not that it isn’t coming, it’s just not time yet!"
Irene clenched her teeth silently, her gaze falling on Vera’s ring. Furious, she snorted. "You really think Kris loves... you?"
"He proposed to me in front of the whole world and put this ring on my hand." Vera stood up, meeting Irene’s gaze directly. "If he doesn’t love me, then who? You?"
Irene faltered for a moment, then let out a cold laugh. "As far as I know, Kris wore this ring on his necklace long before you two even met. You don’t actually believe he prepared this ring specifically for you, do you?!"
Vera’s pupils constricted.
"What do you mean?!"
