Chapter 42 - Adventurer's Guild

"Ugh!"

Kai groaned, rubbing his hands through his hair as he lay on the bed.

Memories of crimson blood...

Zer's battered body... They were still fresh in his mind.

'Who could they be?'

He rubbed his temples.

'How can I find them... and end them?'

[]

A blue panel hovered above his eyes.

Kai sighed.

"Yeah."

It was indeed late at night.

Both Vex and Luna were sprawled beside him.

He was staying in one of the inns in Ashenford Town.

The room was nothing special—

A single bed on the right side, a worktable, and a chair.

A beautiful flower vase sat on the table,

While blue curtains hung over the glass window.

A sigh escaped Kai's lips as he took one last glance at the duo sleeping.

"Good night," he muttered to himself and drifted to sleep.

--

Kai's eyes twitched as he felt something wet on his cheek.

He groggily opened his eyes to find the little culprit licking his cheek nonstop.

[Good morning, Papa!] Luna said cheerfully.

Kai smiled, patting her head. "Good morning."

Feeling left out, Vex also jumped onto Kai, licking his face.

Kai chuckled, pulling her back.

"Good morning to you too, Vex."

Vex purred, smiling after getting her master's attention.

"Let's get fresh and have breakfast," Kai said, sitting up.

[Yaaa!] Luna jumped off in excitement, while Vex let out cheerful cries.

After taking a bath, he changed from his usual tunic to a deep forest-green, lace-up shirt with black leather trim on the shoulders and partial sleeves.

He paired it with slightly tapered, charcoal-gray trousers, secured by a dark brown, fine leather belt fastened at his waist.

Sturdy, mid-calf leather boots, matching his belt, completed the look.

After changing, he glanced at his reflection in the mirror.

His raven-black hair was neatly cut, and his hazel-brown eyes stared directly back at him.

A faint scar ran across his left eye.

But instead of diminishing his looks, it added a unique charm to his handsomely striking face.

Kai's fingers traced his face as he muttered, "I've changed so much, huh?"

He was no longer the old malnourished boy—

But a healthy young man.

His build was lean yet aesthetic.

Turning to Luna, he smiled.

"Do I look handsome?"

[Papa always looks handsome,] she replied with a bright smile.

Kai chuckled. Bending down, he cupped her cheeks and began pinching them.

"Yeah, your papa is the most handsome man in the world."

[Yes!]

Vex also joined the fun, nuzzling against them.

Kai chuckled and stroked her ears.

After a few minutes, they walked out of the room.

Descending the stairs, Kai ordered food for himself and his two adorable little companions.

After finishing the meal, they stepped outside the inn and began walking along the cobblestone street.

'What should I do now?'

Kai's mind raced, while Luna peacefully slept atop his head, and Vex trailed beside him.

As he scanned the area, his gaze flickered around—until it locked onto one specific building.

It was the Adventurers' Guild.

Kai stood in front of the imposing structure, his gaze fixed on the grand building before him.

The guild hall was a massive, three-story stone structure with large arched windows and intricately carved wooden doors that swung open as adventurers bustled in and out.

A towering emblem depicting crossed swords and a roaring beast adorned the top.

The faint scent of steel and leather filled the air, mingling with the aroma of roasted meat from nearby stalls.

A sturdy wooden sign hung by the entrance, etched with the words:

"Adventurers' Guild – Ashenford Branch"

The sound of clashing mugs, rowdy laughter, and the clinking of coins echoed from within.

'So... this is it,' Kai thought.

Suddenly, memories of one of Raven's lectures resurfaced in his mind—

'To become an adventurer, you need to register through an Adventurers' Guild.

There are a total of eight ranks for adventurers—

SSS-Rank

SS-Rank

A-Rank

B-Rank

C-Rank

D-Rank

E-Rank

Every adventurer starts at E-Rank.

To rank up, they must complete several missions before taking an evaluation test.

The test determines whether they advance or remain at E-Rank, depending on their performance and Essence Core rank.

Once you push your rank to D or C-Rank, you'll also be eligible to take mercenary missions.

A talented person can climb up to S-Rank if they work hard enough. And if they've got insane potential, they might be able to hit SS-Rank after years of grinding.

But SSS-Rank? That's a whole different story. Only a handful have ever made it that far and who they are, its legends.

Even the strongest adventurers on this continent are SS-Rank.'

With a deep breath, he took his first step toward the guild.

Kai opened the wooden door and stepped inside.

The air was filled with the smell of ale and roasted meat.

Adventurers clad in armor sat in groups around round tables, chatting, eating, and drinking.

A few glanced in Kai's direction, their eyes briefly assessing him before returning to their conversations.

Kai gazed around, taking in the scene.

To his right, several large wooden boards hung against a giant wall, filled with countless quest, some worn and yellowed, others freshly posted.

To the left, a long wooden bar stretched across the corner, lined with barrels of ale and shelves of bottled drinks.

A few round tables and chairs were scattered nearby, where adventurers gathered to share tales over food and drink.

On the right side, a small equipment stall was showcasing their weapons, armor, and essential supplies.

A burly man, likely to be the blacksmith, stood behind the counter, inspecting a newly forged sword.

Benches and chairs were placed throughout the hall for resting.

Toward the back, a staircase led to the upper floors—

Likely to be reserved for higher-ranked adventurers staying overnight or guild staff managing operations.

His gaze fell on three counters lined up near the center of the hall, each managed by an attendant.

The left counter was the busiest—Adventurers formed a long line, waiting to submit their completed quests or collect rewards.

The attendant there was a middle-aged man with a gray beard and sharp eyes, his hands moving swiftly as he stamped papers and handed out pouches of coins.

Despite the crowded line, he maintained a calm demeanor, answering inquiries with a practiced ease.

The middle counter was slightly less crowded. This counter handled registration and rank evaluations.

A young woman with auburn hair neatly tied into a ponytail managed this desk. Her emerald-green eyes scanned through documents as she guided new adventurers through the registration process, occasionally offering a polite smile to calm their nerves.

The right counter had the shortest line, attended by an elderly man. This counter handled specialized requests—Applying for mercenary missions, forming parties, or purchasing temporary licenses for restricted zones.

Each counter was separated by polished wooden dividers, with small signs indicating their functions. Adventurers of all ranks stood in line—Some impatiently tapping their feet, others exchanging banter while waiting for their turn.

Kai's eyes locked on the middle counter, then he began moving toward the line.
