Chapter 655: Chapter 653: Escape

Wang Ye sat by the coal stove for a while, allowing his body temperature to rise gradually. By now, the wound had started to swell red, and he knew he needed to deal with it as soon as possible—even the most rudimentary treatment would be far better than leaving it as it was.

He rummaged through the room but didn’t find any medicine, only some stale bread and fresh milk. Thus, he searched other apartments for a moment and did find some anti-inflammatory drugs, some bandages, and a simple suturing device.

First, he used a small knife to shave off the rotten, hardened edge of the wound. Then, he heated the knife on the stove. Heading to the bathroom, he randomly grabbed a towel, turned on the tap, and to his surprise, water flowed out. So, he washed the wound with the water and then twisted open an antibiotic capsule, sprinkling the powder on the wound.

Back in the bedroom, Wang Ye used the suturing device he had found to perform a simple suturing on his abdomen. This kind of civilian medical tool was only meant as a temporary measure, primarily for initial care before getting to a hospital. But now, this device was all he had to rely on. Moreover, these things were good for one-time use at most; having used it on the abdominal wound, he had no choice left for the wound on his back.

However, Wang Ye had prepared for this. The small knife was now blazing hot, the blade glowing red. He took the knife and felt for the laceration on his back. Using the high temperature for disinfecting, he pressed the blade against the flesh, sizzling as it seared the skin. Wang Ye merely frowned—such pain was nothing to him.

As the wound cauterized, he twisted open more capsules and sprinkled the powder onto the bandages, then applied them to both the abdominal and back wounds, wrapping his waist and belly with the gauze. That counted as treating the injuries.

He did the same for the wound on his shoulder, wrapping it twice before going to wash his face. Then, holding the bread, he stood by the window, pulling the curtain to create a small slit to eat and observe the situation outside.

Outside was completely dark now, the cozy orange light of the fire illuminated half of his body from the darkness; this place had become a dead city.

Wang Ye finished all the bread stored by the room’s owner. His body’s black organ, in coordination with his stomach, began to rapidly dissolve the food, sending it to the intestines for absorption.

Feeling somewhat fatigued, he moved a wardrobe to block the door and flipped a desk to cover the front of the coal stove, making the light less conspicuous. From the outside, the brightness of the light shining through the window wouldn’t be immediately visible in the darkness.

Such camouflage was utterly inadequate by military standards, but Wang Ye was too worn out to care. He pulled all the quilts and bed sheets from the bed, wrapped them around himself, and lay down under the bed, placing the arc blade by the wall, and then he drifted into a heavy sleep.

He woke up twice during the night, but luckily, there were no dangerous situations. Occasionally, wild animals passed by—the corpses attracted a few carnivorous animals living in the polar regions, and the city still had some domesticated stray cats and dogs that, after losing their owners, could only wait for death in the icy, snowy dead city.

After waking up the second time, Wang Ye couldn’t fall back asleep. His enhanced surgery had significantly improved his rest efficiency, a short half-hour rest equated to five hours of sleep for a regular person.

So, he decided to take advantage of the deep night to explore the city and gathered some useful supplies from the entire building to prepare for his outing.

Wang Ye was too big now, standing over two meters tall, making it impossible to find fitting underwear. But fortunately, there were also some large residents in this building, so he was lucky to find a thick cotton coat to wrap around himself. Next, he found a black sports backpack, filled it with a lot of hard, dry bread, and filled up a 5L plastic bottle with water, then carrying the arc blade, he left the apartment building.

The city was deserted, with the aurora flickering in the sky, not so dark that one couldn’t see their hand before their face, but without lights, visibility was still low.

Wang Ye noticed that after nightfall, the cries of cats and dogs in the city increased. On the streets, one could see clusters of black shadows slowly moving—packs of wild animals coming from the frozen woods at the city’s outskirts.

Wang Ye couldn’t make out what they were. Wolves? They didn’t quite resemble them; maybe they were Arctic Foxes. He even saw a few polar bears from a distance, breaking into homes in search of food.

His primary goal was to contact the evacuation troops, and using a radio broadcast was the most realistic way. The city wasn’t large, but it had all the necessary facilities, so finding a radio station shouldn’t be difficult.

However, the journey wasn’t easy. Domestic cats and dogs had broken out of windows, and some houses weren’t even locked—residents had been captured right on the streets. Who knew what had happened here? In any case, after the civilians were taken away, their pets, driven by hunger, would do anything to leave their cage-like homes to find food.

And the wild beasts from the forest were drawn by the corpses, flooding into the city.

Thus, the night streets became a battleground for another species.

Wang Ye observed all this with interest, neither intending nor caring to intervene. On one of the biggest main roads, a pack of wolves howled, encountering Arctic foxes, while on another street, large dogs faced off against small ones, with a group of domestic cats caught in the middle, frantically shrieking.

Soon, the battle unfolded. Wolves and foxes fought a bloody conflict over the rights to those corpses, and it was then that Wang Ye learned that even Arctic foxes would eat human flesh.

The conflict between the large and small dogs was rather dull in comparison. After all, they were domesticated, lacking the instincts of wild beasts. Their encounters were more of a clash rather than a massacre.

The cats scattered in all directions, sometimes, due to their lower intelligence, even stopping mid-flight to confront and fight one another for some reason.

Wang Ye found a paper map and a travel guide inside a household, gaining a rough understanding of the city. This small city called Garden Town was an inconspicuous presence in Greenland, but using the map as a guide, Wang Ye still found a radio center affiliated with the police station.

But he didn’t know where he was, so he had to go downstairs to see if there were any public transportation stops nearby.

Now, he felt a little better, his body had warmed up, and his goal was much clearer. He liked the feeling of executing a plan methodically, and so, his spirits lifted.

Wang Ye somersaulted off the balcony and came onto the street, where there was a bus stop just across the corner.

He wiped the snowflakes off his arc blade, twirled the knife a couple of times, and then headed towards the bus stop.
