Chapter 649: Chapter 647: Destruction and Death

Several flying swords swooped down, piercing through the crowd. In an instant, a great spray of blood stained the air. A member of the Demon Marine Corps, missing an arm, wielded an arc blade in a fierce clash with four Descendant Soldiers. In the end, he was sliced into three sections; his severed head rolled to the side, still screaming, while the hand holding the knife continued to send commands to the hilt, emitting a series of electric arcs.

Death surrounded Wang Mingxue. This wasn’t battle; it was a massacre. The Demon Marine Corps could only take advantage of surprise attacks, but they could not hope to fight outnumbered. The situation was even worse for the ordinary soldiers in their heavy equipment; a tank surrounded by six Descendants was set ablaze until blackened, the crew inside firing until their death.

She had become numb, only knowing to use all her strength to push that block of ice. But the block was too large, too heavy; more than twenty people pushed for a long while, only moving it thirty meters or so.

A Marine fell beside her with a thud, an arm already torn away, his arc blade seized by a Descendant Soldier and turned against him, stabbing into his back with the blade protruding from the chest, a large, gaping blood hole in his abdomen with intestines spilling out.

He looked at Wang Mingxue, grabbed her, and threw her onto the block of ice. Then, with his last bit of strength, he rammed into the ice block.

The ice block slid hundreds of meters with a whoosh, crashing down a ramp and into a wall on the bend, then slipping into the underground parking lot. As she lay atop the block, looking back, she saw more than a dozen Descendant Soldiers descend, landing in the position they had just vacated, killing everyone there.

Wang Mingxue flipped off the ice and saw dozens of large trucks ready to evacuate through the underground passage. Already, half of them had left, and a hundred ordinary soldiers stood guard at the exit with guns at the ready.

Professor Feng Nuoyi was waiting by the last truck. He quickly said, "Use the drilling rig to secure the ice block!"

"Where’s my grandfather... Commander Lu?!" Wang Mingxue asked.

"He was in the first truck. He’s been gone for a long time. Hurry up and come with us!" Feng Nuoyi replied.

Wang Mingxue picked up the shortwave communicator, ready to contact Commander Lu, but Feng Nuoyi said, "You won’t reach him! The thing has a maximum range of four kilometers, and the convoy left the area over ten kilometers ago."

She had no choice but to give up. She then helped position the drill of the drilling rig against the ice, boring four holes and threading them with iron chains to hang on the back of the truck.

The battle raged on above ground, but Wang Mingxue knew that their living forces were dwindling. Though shameful to flee, they might be humanity’s last spark of hope.

Wang Mingxue and Feng Nuoyi boarded the truck, and the last of the convoy began to move. Descendant Soldiers were already appearing in the passage, with 120 ordinary soldiers forming a wall of fire, trying to intercept them.

Wang Mingxue saw the towering Descendant Soldiers had no fear of 5.56 mm bullets; they broke through the defensive line in an instant with fire and electricity, leaving behind hundreds of corpses. They were about to catch up when a metal gate in the underground passage clanged down, like a guillotine, then another gate fell 150 meters away.

Wang Mingxue looked at the ice block being dragged by the truck; her lover lay inside it, his corpse... She thought of Wang Ye, who might be fighting the horde of Descendants outside... Perhaps he, too, was dead by now. Amidst these thoughts, her grief burst forth, and tears welled in her eyes.

Professor Feng Nuoyi patted her shoulder and said, "Cry it out, girl. No one will laugh at you."

Wang Mingxue took a deep breath and asked, "What cards do we have left to play? You saw it too; the Demon Marine Corps is no match for them!"

"This area has fallen, but in other regions, we still have people. Our numbers might not be much—maybe a few thousand—but when it comes to it..." Feng Nuoyi said.

"No! That’s useless. Even if we had tens of thousands from the Demon Marine Corps, we couldn’t beat its army. Did you see that white giant in the sky?! It didn’t even make a move! We need someone stronger than the Demon Marine Corps. Professor, you must have a way!" Wang Mingxue interrupted.

"We have no more people for experiments. I can’t prove it," Feng Nuoyi said.

"I can! I’ll be your test subject. I want to avenge Leng Kai!" Wang Mingxue said.

"Don’t be rash, Wang. I have a plan, and I think it’s time to initiate it. Commander Lu once told me this plan was too radical, the cost too high, but now we have no choice but to bet everything. That’s why I told you to bring their corpses," Feng Nuoyi said.

"How much stronger can this plan be compared to the Demon Marine Corps?!" Wang Mingxue asked.

"If successful, we could create another like It... No... If we’re lucky, even more... But at the moment, this plan is still on paper," Feng Nuoyi said.

"Then let’s do it. I’ll be the first to lie on the surgical table!" Wang Mingxue said.

"If Commander Lu finds out... he’s sure to kill me... that is if he can still survive..." Feng Nuoyi shook his head.

Wang Mingxue frowned and asked, "What do you mean? Where is he?!"

In the main building of the base, on the third floor in the command room.

Commander Lu sat behind his desk, holding a black, old-fashioned pistol. This was a standard issue army pistol he had brought from Yin Country.

"Old friend, I never imagined I’d end up with only you by my side," Commander Lu said as he pressed bullets into the magazine. To preserve the magazine’s spring, he had carried the gun for many years since leaving Yin Country but had always kept it unloaded. He was reluctant to press bullets into it, fearing the spring would lose its elasticity from overuse.

A sword slashed through the wooden door. Cha Na crouched to enter the cramped space, having reduced his height to around two meters to fit better.

"Hmm... At least you didn’t run. Of all the commanders I’ve seen, they all would abandon their troops and escape," Cha Na said.

"Young man, don’t think that winning one battle means you can win the war," Commander Lu replied, without a trace of fear.

"Even now, you still have a chance. Divine Power Tianyang would respect a soldier like you. You could become one of my Divine Descendants, commanding millions of my troops," Cha Na said.

"But I wouldn’t respect you. You’re just a runaway superpower special force, allowed by those foolish politicians to grow and expand. But not by me," Commander Lu said.

"Your forces are finished, and those left will face the same end. No one can stop the dawn of the New World; we will ultimately save this world. Once we dispose of you, there will be no more wars," Cha Na stated.

"There’s an old saying in Yin Country, ’vengeance will come, in time.’ We’ll see, we’ll see," Commander Lu smiled and said.

He raised the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger.
