Chapter 97: Ariel, do you remember the first time we met?

Night came and both Raymond and Ariel still hadn’t woken up. The anesthesia wasn’t a strong one so for Ariel to sleep this long, Steve concluded that she had been incredibly tired and was just acting stubborn.

"I’ll check up on them later." Steve said to himself and made sure to change Raymond’s drip before leaving.

Three hours later, Steve was done with his work and was getting ready to head to bed but he decided to check on them first.

As soon as he got to their ward, without knocking, he opened the door only to catch the both of them kissing so intimately in a sitting position and his jaw dropped.

"You’ve got to be kidding me." Startled, Ariel immediately pushed Raymond away and he grunted.

"Oh no, I’m so sorry. Did I hurt you?" She looked panicked and Raymond raised his gaze to glare at Steve.

"Don’t even give me that look. Why in the world are you two doing this when you’re not well?" He barked at them and Ariel looked away in guilt.

"Can’t you mind your business?" Raymond asked him and that ticked him off.

"Mind my... Mind my business?" His eyes flared with rage and he folded his arms. "You want me to mind my business? Why don’t you lift that left arm of yours before repeating those words to me?" There was no response and he breathed out. "I thought so. Now, what led to this?"

Raymond looked aside and Ariel sneaked a peak at him. He definitely wouldn’t say what happened and Steve looked mad. She decided to be the bigger person and confess.

"Well, that is..."

Half an hour earlier...

Raymond woke up and saw Ariel sleeping beside him. He felt exhausted for some reason and his vision was a bit hazy but it was not so bad that he wouldn’t be able to recognize her.

She looked peaceful while she slept and nothing seemed to be wrong. Plus, all the visible wounds he saw on her had been treated and patched up.

All in all, she was alright.

"I’m glad." He muttered and intended to stroke her hair but then he remembered his left arm was in bad condition.

Looking at his left arm, he gritted his teeth. Those twins... He would get them to pay for this. He would get them to pay for everything they did to Ariel and himself.

"Ariel." He muttered. "How will you react once I tell you my true feelings?" He wondered and reached out his right hand to touch her but as soon as he touched her face, she woke up, fluttering her eyelashes dreamily.

"Sir Raymond." She called and finally opened her eyes clearly. Seeing that he had finally woken up, she hugged him and cried. "I’m so glad you woke up."

"Ariel, I got shot in the arm and not the gut. Why wouldn’t I wake up?"

"Still." She snuggled her face in his chest. "I was scared." She confessed. "I’m not bold, I’m not brave either. I do all that I do because I know you believe in me and I don’t want to mess up but in reality, I’m just a scaredy cat. I can’t do something if I have no motivation and I run away too easily."

Her words oddly reminded him of their first meeting. Though she might not have figured out that the man she saved that day was him, he still remembered it clearly. Maybe it was time to tell her the truth.

"Ariel, do you remember the first time we met?" He asked her and she paused.

"That would be... At my house. When I was about to die." She said but he shook his head.

"That’s not even our second meeting." He said which confused her.

"We... We met before then?" She asked.

Raymond understood why she was confused and decided to sit up.

Ariel saw this and assisted him. He looked at the drip attached to his arm vein and almost tsked. How he hated these things.

"Sir Raymond?" Ariel called and he turned to her.

"I told you to call me Ray." He said, smiling warmly at her but she looked confused. "Call me Ray and I’ll tell you what you want to know." He conditioned and though it wasn’t hard, she felt it was a bit weird how he wanted her to call him by a nickname by all means.

She pursed her lips and parted them gently, in an attempt to call his name and she did. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

"Ray." Slowly the words slipped through her lips and to Raymond, they sounded like sweet sugar coated hues being fed to his ears.

This wasn’t the first time she was calling him that but maybe because it was so turbulent at that time, he couldn’t sink well into the feeling but now, it was so sweet. He wanted her to call him that everytime.

"One more time." He said. "Call me one more time."

Ariel twisted her lips as her face flushed. The expression on his face... Did he like it that much?

"Ray." She called.

At this rate, Raymond knew he would get a boner so before that happened, he decided to move on.

"The first time we met, Ariel, I was a dying man." He said which shocked her. "I was being beaten by a group of thugs. They were sent by my family. The twins, to be precise. That day, I sat at a bar and had a drink but then I started feeling dizzy. I did take my guards with me but I left the outside because the bar had exclusive entry only."

Ariel was listening carefully like her life depended on it.

"I had a drink, not knowing it had been laced so I got really dizzy and went to the restroom as they predicted and they ambushed me there. There were a few thugs inside and I got hit in the head." He paused and looked up to see Ariel was following carefully. "Anyway, they dragged me into that alley and I had no single strength to retaliate. That’s how strong the drug was. I guess their aim was to break a few limbs of mine or maybe kill me but then, a brave and courageous girl came to my rescue." He smiled warmly at her. "She chased them off with her fake police siren and ran to me. I can still remember the words she said to me. They were quite vivid, even in my condition. She worried about a stranger like me. She did something so bold by chasing away thugs thrice her size and yet she claimed she wasn’t bold." He chuckled.

Ariel’s eyes had begun to water as she saw this as unbelievable. What sort of coincidence was this?

Raymond recalled the words and snapped his fingers, still smiling warmly at her.

"When she felt the thugs were coming back, she decided to flee and apologized to me, ’I’m sorry, I’m not bold enough to face them. I’m scared!’ She said that and ran away." It sounded comical by the sound of his tone but only Ariel would understand the gravity of that situation and those words. "It’s thanks to her that I survived that night. I owe it to her."

He looked at Ariel whose tears were already rolling down. She had already figured it out.

"That means you... I... "

Raymond nodded and held her hand.

"Yes, Ariel, the first time we met, you saved my life."
