Chapter 95: That time was different

Ariel and Raymond had a rather soft landing thanks to the trees and thick yet soft bushes but they were not alright. At least Ariel was but for Raymond, his arm was bleeding profusely thanks to the bullet and Ariel was trying all she could to stop the bleeding. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

She ripped her dress to soak up the blood that kept gushing out and maybe stop the bleeding but it was the kind of fabric that was easy to rip and not absorbent.

She took off his coat to use and while she frantically tried to stop the bleeding, Raymond watched her. He was in pain, yes but the way she acted so worried about him made him feel special and it distracted him.

With his other hand, he stroked her hair and she looked up, showing her teary eyes.

"Hey, don’t cry." He said to her but she could only cry more and say,

"But you’re hurt."

"And your tears won’t really do anything to help. If anything, it will only make my hand sting once it drops." He said and though he didn’t say it with the intention to make her feel guilty, she started feeling bad.

"You’re right. I’m doing something useless right now."

"Of course that’s noy that case. You’re doing a wonderful job." He said and stroked her hair again. "But if you keep crying, you’ll end up with swollen eyes."

"I’m sorry, Sir Raymond." She apologized and started cleaning her eyes.

"Hey, don’t go back to calling me that." Raymond said and she looked at him.

"What?"

"Don’t start calling me Sir Raymond again. Go ahead and call me Ray." He said with a soft smile which inevitably took her breath away.

"Ray." She said softly and his heart skipped. "Ray." She repeated and then looked aside, her face flushing profusely.

"What’s wrong?"

"It’s just... Isn’t that name a bit too intimate?" She asked and stole a glance at him. "How can I call you that when we’re not ’that’ close?" She asked.

"What’s wrong with that?" Raymond asked her. "And how close do you want us to be before you can call me by a nickname? You used to call me hubby, remember?"

Her face flushed again.

"That time was different." She said, "It was only an act at the time."

"But it wasn’t an act when you and I made love, Ariel." He drew his face nearer to her. "From that moment I let you take my virginity, I already belonged to you. So why can’t you call me by a nickname?"

Ariel was dumbstruck. He let her do what? When did his words start sounding so...? It sounded like she took advantage of him or something like that and he wanted her to take responsibility.

’Sir Raymond.’ Her thoughts rang and she pursed her lips, looking at his grin. ’He doesn’t mind that I’ve been used like that. He still wants me by his side.’

Feeling touched, tears slowly streamed down her cheeks. Raymond thought his words had made her cry and wondered if he let out his words wrongly.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you cry."

She looked up at him and seeing his anxious look, she started laughing.

"I feel like the moments we spent apart made you into a different person." She cupped his face. "You’ve become more open in expressing your thoughts and before, you used to be ascertain before saying anything but now, you just let whatever you’re thinking slip out. You’re more like a normal person now."

Raymond was silent. She was able to grasp all that?

"But... You certainly don’t have a layman’s look." She said and grazed his cheeks with her thumbs. "You still have looks that can kill, Sir Raymond."

"Call me Ray." Raymond demanded with a soft tone and she gulped.

"Ray." She muttered and her face slowly leaned towards his face. "Ray." She called again.

Raymond looked into her eyes. She had this certain glow that he couldn’t resist. In his eyes, she was the most perfect woman and she had a character no one else had. Her influence his his life... no one else could do that.

As she leaned in, he also found himself leaning in. His eyes fell on her lips. They were torn but even at that, she still wanted to kiss him. He wanted it as well but his consciousness kept nagging him.

Was this right? He just saved her, was it right to go ahead and kiss her?

Just when their lips were about to meet, Ariel’s hand accidently pressed on his wounded arm and he grunted. She immediately snapped out of it and looked down at his hand.

"Oh my God, I’m so sorry." She started apologizing. The wound was bleeding again and Raymond looked to be in pain.

"It’s alright." Raymond said, trying to hide his pain behind a smile. "It doesn’t hurt much."

"Still..." She grew solemn. "I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have done that when we’re in such a situation and your hand..." She sniffed.

Raymond looked at her with eyes that looked to be amused and at the same time concerned.

"It’s alright." He stroked her hair but then he spotted someone through the holes in the bushes and pressed her head against his chest. "Shhh. Someone’s here."

Ariel’s heart began to beat fast in fear. Would they get caught? She could hear her own heartbeat accelerating but her breathing was fine. Wait a minute, that wasn’t her heart.

Her head was pressed against Raymond’s chest. That rapid heartbeat did not belong to her. It belonged to Raymond.

Raymond was worried that his own incompetence would get them caught again. His left arm was currently useless and if they were to get caught, he wouldn’t be able to keep Ariel safe with one arm.

If she got caught... His heartbeat kept accelerating. It wasn’t just due to his worry and fear but rather because of the ridiculous amount of blood he had lost. His temperature was also rising and his breathing was becoming unsteady.

"Sir Raymond." Ariel called, worriedly. "You’re sweating a lot, Sir Raymond. Are you alright?"

"I’m fine." He said but his vision was getting hazy. He couldn’t bring himself to fall unconscious, especially when they were still in this sort of danger.

"Sir Raymond," Ariel’s face contorted in fear and worry. "Please, don’t fall asleep. Sir Raymond."

Ariel looked back and saw the person behind the bushes. He looked familiar and with a closer look, discovered it was not their enemy but Skylar.

"Sir Raymond, it’s Skylar." Ariel said in a moment of relief and she called out to him. "Skylar. We’re over here."

Seeing this, Raymond knew he could rest easy.

"Sir Raymond." Ariel called, tears already streaming down her cheeks like rain. "Please be alright."

"Ariel." Raymond called with the little bit of consciousness he had left and smiled. "I’m alright." He said. "And also, didn’t I say to call me Ray?" With that, he fell unconscious, causing Ariel to panic.

Skylar finally got to them and seeing the both of them, he sighed in relief but they weren’t in the nest condition so he yelled out to the others and Steve, along with other guards, rushed towards them.

He took a look at Raymond’s condition and turned to Skylar.

"Please call your sister. We need to take him to get treated right away."
