I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 249: Maxwell can’t read the room
The day of the party drew near. It was scheduled on a Friday night but during the day, everyone made sure to present their gifts first.
Since Raymond had very much provided everything for his daughter, finding a rare gift for her was tough.
While Paige and Maxwell presented a land deed of a mountainside villa to the little girl, Steve presented an antique porcelain vase, saying it would beautify the villa. So everyone ended up getting something to fill the villa. Well, everyone except Jane and Alexa.
Everyone’s gifts were so exaggerated and overwhelming that Jane and Alexa exchanged glances like they were aliens. Compared to the gifts others gave, the little trinkets they had in boxes were nothing.
"I feel bad for some reason." Alexa said to Jane who nodded and said,
"Same here. My gift looks so small." Jane sobbed but then, Maxwell crept up to her and snatched the box from her hand.
"What’s this?" He asked but she tried to get it back, embarrassed at how little her gift was.
"Just give it back. It doesn’t concern you." She said but he raised his hand higher, preventing her from getting it.
"Just tell me what it is. The box is so small. Do you plan to give this little girl a ring?" He teased and she rolled her eyes.
"Says the guy who gifted her a house. Do you plan to chase Rachael away from her parent’s house already?" She put in more effort to jump high in order to get the box but Maxwell was adamant about not letting her have it.
He looked like he was having fun.
"Stop causing trouble and give it to me. It’s already bad enough that I’m giving such a small gift. It would be bad if it gets broken as well."
"Hm? Now I’m more eager to know what’s in it." He stepped back, only for his back to meet the wall.
Jane was ready to kick his leg and make him crouch in order to get the box but before she could do that, Maxwell caught her hand and switched positions with her, pinning her to the wall.
He grinned.
"You can’t beat me." He said but she got mad and eventually attempted to kick him. But as if he was able to read her mind, he moved his leg back, avoiding her kick, and did the same for the order.
"Just give it to me." Jane fumed.
Alexa watched them. When did their relationship grow so close? She was confused. Maxwell... She didn’t know him very well but she noticed he was the kind that didn’t do anything if it didn’t benefit him and the only people she had ever seen him smile to were Rachael and Paige. Especially Paige.
And here he was smiling and teasing poor Jane.
Because Alexa was oblivious to what happened in Germany when they both went to retrieve the documents at the hospital, she didn’t know that chemistry had formed between the both of them.
"Maxwell." Paige called and Maxwell turned to see her. Jane used this opportunity to snatch the box from his hand and said to his hearing alone,
"Move over. You’ll make your wife misunderstand." She said but Maxwell had not the slightest clue as to what she was talking about.
But he stepped back anyway but he didn’t let Jane escape and wrapped his arms around her neck.
"You’re not going anywhere. You’ve been avoiding me, haven’t you?" He said and Jane wondered if he was stupid or he was just clueless. Why would he do this in front of his wife?
If she overlooked this once more then she would come to the conclusion that their trust level was higher than she thought.
Maxwell turned to Paige and said,
"Wifey, you called?"
Paige, who was still recovering from the shock of the scene in front of her, shook her head slightly and said,
"Well, we need to get ready. The guests will start arriving in an hour." She said and Maxwell nodded.
"Alright. I’ll come over right away." Though he said this, he did not move from his place and simply smiled, expecting Paige to go to the room first.
Paige was still stunned. She had never thought of a day when Maxwell would prioritize someone else over her. She called him but he ignored her just to make sure Jane did not get away from him. What did this mean? She clutched her chest. It was feeling congested and she felt a bit of pain.
"What is this?"
Jane frowned at Maxwell.
"You’re such an idiot. Let me go." She said and Maxwell let go.
"Why are you getting mad all of a sudden?" He asked her but she honestly had no words for him. Who was going to explain to this guy that having a wife meant he had to keep his distance away from other women?
The soul mate or was it brother-sister relationship he was looking for could not be an excuse to ignore his wife even for a second. And they weren’t even related by blood so it would definitely make Paige feel insecure. The expression on her face just now confirmed it.
"Maxwell," Alexa, who had been spectating the whole thing called and he looked down at her. She has this serious face. "You should go to Paige." She said and though Maxwell couldn’t tell why, he rubbed the back of his neck and went on his way.
As soon as he was gone, Jane sighed and Alexa asked her,
"What’s going on with you two?" Jane shot her a gaze that said, ’Seriously?’
"There’s nothing between us." She answered. "Maxwell is the kind of guy who hardly sees a reason to associate with people. And he suddenly started talking to me during Ultio’s anniversary and since then, he’s been acting like we’re great pals. And we got especially close when we were in Germany after I broke up with Daniel."
"What?!" Alexa furrowed her eyebrows and Jane pursed her lips. What did she say? "You broke up with Daniel? How did that happen? I thought you said he went away for a business trip so you decided to come work for Steve to gather experience."
Jane darted her eyes aside. Ah, she had let the cat out of the bag without knowing. But at least she didn’t take note of her and Maxwell being together in Germany.
"And what’s that about you both being close in Germany?" Alexa asked and Jane melted.
Now, she’s done it. She and her big mouth.
