I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 238: Her field of study
"There’s a bomb?"
Jane asked, with a dumbfounded expression and Maxwell examined her face for a while before closing his eyes with a little laugh.
"Wow, when I don’t want you to be smart, you become the most intelligent person in the world. How did you figure that out with just a few lines?" He asked her and she froze.
"Is... Is that true?"
"Yes." He said and signaled his men with a circular finger motion. "I found it strange that ’the’ Serena was so concerned about a hospital that she went ahead to be affiliated with it, so I did my research."
They both started walking and got into the car.
"It would seem like she was very clever but she met me and it’s too bad for her." He confidently said.
"What did you find out?"
"Most of Serena’s exploits are hidden in that hospital’s file chamber. Why she keeps them there, I don’t know, but if we want to pull her down, we have to get those files."
The driver started the car and started driving out of the underground garage. Jane nodded at this understanding and said,
"It seems she kept them there because the hospital is the least suspected in times like this."
"Since the hospital is the priority of the government. They would never want to put the citizens in danger and most especially the sick and disabled citizens."
Jane went silent. So for Serena to plant a bomb, she decided that as a last minute resort. If she did all she could and they still managed to get their hands on the files, she would blow up the hospital to stop it from getting out.
But if she was going to be so extreme, why keep a copy of such files to begin with? She could’ve just torn them to pieces or better still, burn them up.
Why keep something that could put your entire effort into jeopardy?
’Serena, what are you hiding?’ she wondered.
"If she blows up the hospital," Maxwell began, "...it would be good for us."
"What?!" Jane exclaimed with widened eyes. "What do you mean? How is it better if she blows up a hospital housing hundreds of patients?"
"The patients will be fine because I sent out a special unit to secretly start evacuating. They will all be transferred to another hospital in no time. I made preparations for all of that. The ones in need of surgery have already been evacuated first so they can proceed as normal."
Jane was stunned. When did he have time to do all that? Was it when she was sulking about her broken heart in the living room or was it when she had gone to bed? Did he get any sleep at all?
That explained the dark eye bags under his eyes.
As if reading her thoughts, he said,
"I didn’t take care of the transfer all night. I was busy doing other things."
She blinked and looked aside, awkwardly rubbing the back of her neck.
"So, what did you mean when you said it will be good for us if she blows up the hospital?" she asked.
"We’re trying to find just about enough dirt in her hand and if the great German Empire declared her as a criminal for blowing up a hospital filled with ill civilians, we can nail her down. The people will be in support of us getting ’rid’ of her because of what she did to the innocent patients."
"But it’s not going to be filled with patients though." She said but he grinned and said,
"They don’t know that."
"Oh!"
She seemed to understand everything clearly now. This Operation was approved by the government but the normal civilians did not know about it so they would blame Serena for sure and call her the villain.
The people will never know that the hospital was empty the moment the explosion took place because they had been secretly evacuated.
It was a brilliant and smooth operation but then, where would she work from then on?
"It’s good for us but not really for me because then I wouldn’t have a job anymore." She said and placed her hand on her forehead. "I’ll need to start looking for a place to stay first and then a hospital where I can get accepted. It’s going to be hectic from now on."
She looked distressed. But then, Maxwell handed her an envelope.
"What is it?"
"It’s compensation for participating in this ’dangerous’ operation." He said and though she never wanted anything since she was doing it for Alexa, she took the envelope out of curiosity and checked its content.
She was surprised when she saw it was a transfer letter. She had been transferred to Raymond Steins special facility as one of the head surgeons.
She was beyond shocked, looked up at him and then back at the contents of letter, unsure if she was seeing clearly. Was he serious?
"All that’s left is to get your signature and you’ll finally be..."
His words hung on his throat as soon as he spotted her tears.
"What are you doing? I didn’t mention that bastard, so why...?"
She shook her head.
"That’s not it. These aren’t sad tears. They... They’re happy tears." She said and sniffed. "After breaking up with Daniel, I thought I would never get to know myself again but with this... I can start over. I can start somewhere new. Thank you, Maxwell."
He watched her smile through her tears and felt fulfilled.
He made the right choice in the end.
Raymond decided to fund the government enough money to build a new hospital, as well as provide all the facilities it would need even if he wasn’t going to be the one blowin guo the hospital, and the government happily went with his plan.
All that was left was relocating all the patients, prioritizing those who were in need of urgent surgery and those in the intensive care unit, ICU.
Then, they would have to transfer all the workers as well, making sure no one lost their jobs because of this operation.
It was such a hassle. He wouldn’t mind if everyone in the building went down with the building but since Paige asked him to do it, he gladly did it.
Not too glad but he didn’t complain.
The two days they spent in Raymond’s mansion before they took off to Germany, while Jane was spending them with Alexa, he was spending them in Raymond’s office, sorting out files of whose and who’s.
The day before they left, Maxwell was taking care of the transfer documents for the doctors to other hospitals when he came across Jane’s file.
Her field of study was great and her report showed she was very good at it.
For someone who always let her tongue lose and smiled like a child, she was such a successful surgeon. It was a surprise but that was alright.
"Wouldn’t it be better to bring her here? Since she’s your wife’s only friend." He had suggested and Raymond nodded.
He approved it and all that was left was for Jane to sign it.
"Here." He handed her a pen and she quickly signed it.
"I still can’t believe it." She said
"Hm? Then don’t I get a hug for it?"
"Dream on." She said but her eyes kept sparkling as she stared at the letter.
’She seems to be very happy about it. More happy than I anticipated.’ He thought and looked out the window. ’I didn’t really anticipate so deeply to begin with.’
He shifted his gaze to her arm and asked,
"You don’t use a bandage anymore?"
She looked at him, wondering what he was talking about.
"It was pretty bad yesterday." He added and her eyes trailed his gaze to her wrist.
"Oh, it was nothing. It was back to normal when I took off the bandage this morning." She said, "It wasn’t a big deal to begin with."
"Hm."
They got to the hospital and Jane did a funny thing. She took a picture of the hospital’s front view and Maxwell asked,
"What are you doing?"
"Well, it’s going to be blown to bits soon so I better take whatever memory I can of it while I still can." She said, smiling sheepishly. "After all, this is going to be in the history books."
Maxwell shook his head and walked in. She hurried after him and strode through the halls.
The feeling of walking through the halls she knew she would never walk in again made her feel ...nostalgic?
"Where’s your office?" Maxwell asked, snapping her out of her absent-mindedness.
"This way."
She greeted her fellow doctors and noticed that there were strange faces she had never seen before.
"Those are my people." Maxwell whispered from behind her and she nodded.
They looked like real doctors so no one would suspect anything.
It was real. This place was going to be blown to bits in an hour or two.
She opened her office and he looked round before going to sit on the chair opposite hers.
"What are you doing?" she asked as she moved towards her hangers to pick up her white coat.
"I came for consultation. Shouldn’t I at least sit to fulfill my part?" He asked and she shook her head. "By the way, won’t you take a pic of your office? You’ll miss the front building of this old place but not your office?"
"I have enough on my phone." She adjusted her coat and took out her phone again. She scrolled through her gallery only to pause at a picture, and immediately wore a sad face.
