Chapter 154: What happened?

Downing her fourth glass of whiskey, Alexa stared at the bottle. Drinking wouldn’t solve anything and she knew that fact very clearly as a psychologist but she couldn’t help it.

She was having that awful headache again but no matter how many of the pills she took, it wouldn’t go down so she just decided to drink and feel less worried.

Her spirit was so down that she wanted anything that would divert her mind, even if it was for a second.

"Mummy," Rachael called as she came into the living room and this startled Alexa.

"Aren’t you sleeping?" Alexa asked and covered her mouth, ashamed that she smelled like alcohol.

"I was but I woke up because I got hungry." Rachael said and saw Alexa signaling her to stay where she was so she stared at her mother from a distance.

"Oh baby, I’m sorry I forgot. Let me make you something really quick." Alexa said and attempted to stand but then she staggered.

"Mummy." Rachael screamed in fright.

"Don’t worry, Rachael. I’m okay." Alexa said, clutching on to the side of the table. ’This is definitely not a good image to put up in front of Rachael. This is why alcohol is bad.’

She tried to stand straight but her legs were weak and they ended up giving in.

Rachael ran to her, ignoring the fact that her mother would like a little bit of distance.

"Mummy, are you okay?" She asked, only for Alexa to raise her head and show the tears that were fast rolling down. "Mummy." She felt pained as she watched her mother cry. "Does it hurt anywhere?"

Alexa refused to answer that. This was such a shameful image to show to her daughter. She felt really awful.

Then suddenly, Rachael hugged her.

"Don’t worry, mummy. I’m here." She comforted her. "You can cry all you want. I will hold you and not let you go."

Hearing the comforting words of her daughter, Alexa felt she had been greatly blessed. she clutched onto Rachael and cried more.

"I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry. Please forgive mummy for looking like this. I’m sorry." She apologized as she cried.

In this world where she knew no one, Rachael comforted her with her little heartbeat and steady movements in her belly and even now... she was comforting her so well that she wondered what she ever did to deserve such a loving and caring daughter.

Alexa finally fell asleep and Rachael went to the room to get a quilt and blanket. She covered her mother because she was lying on the floor and also increased the heat from the AC so she wouldn’t catch a cold.

’Hopefully, when she wakes up to pee, she’ll go to bed.’ Rachael thought as she watched her mother sleep.

Strange things were happening, she knew that fact but she just couldn’t understand any of it. It seemed like aunty Jane wasn’t of much help either so who could help them?

Her mummy definitely couldn’t do it alone and that’s why she was feeling so down and then she cried.

Her heart felt heavy. She knew she told her mummy not to cry alone but seeing her cry in front of her was more painful than she ever thought.

It was already painful enough assuming that her mummy cried in secret but this was a lot worse.

She bit down on her lip. Who could help them?

Then suddenly, she remembered that one person who seemed like a powerful person. Would he help them? Yes, he would. He said he’d do anything for her so this was the opportunity to use that favor.

She got her mother’s phone and went to the room where she wouldn’t disturb her but then when she was about to dial the number, she paused.

"It’s late." She muttered, "I hope I’m not disturbing him."

Rachael went ahead and dialed his number and just after the first ring, he picked up.

"Hello?"

"Padre." Rachael called with a voice filled with agony and Raymond, who was on the other line, immediately knew something was wrong. He dropped his pen and asked,

"What happened?"

"My mummy, she..." Rachael tried not to cry but saying the words made her cry. "...She’s scared. She canceled all her schedule, she drank alcohol, and then she cried. I don’t know what’s going on but she’s not acting normal. I think she’s sick too because I saw her taking some pills."

Raymond furrowed his eyebrows. When did all that happen? Those were signs that she was falling into depression.

"Rachael, can you tell me exactly what happened before she started acting that way?"

"She fought with aunty." Rachael said and sniffed. "After mummy found out aunty said strange words to me, she got mad at aunty and they fought and then mummy found out I was getting bullied in school."

"You were getting bullied?" Raymond asked, looking furious and Rachael nodded from where she was.

"I was always getting bullied because I don’t have a daddy." She said and sniffed. "That’s how it all started and mummy hasn’t been herself since then. She used to be sad before but not like this. I’m scared." She cried. "Mummy cried because of me. She kept apologizing and I didn’t know what to do. I just know it’s my fault."

"Calm down, Rachael. It’s not your fault." Raymond said, trying to assure her and comfort her. "Your mummy must be going through some tough times. It doesn’t mean you’re the reason she’s crying."

"But... "

"Rachael, where is your mummy right now?" Raymond asked and she looked towards the door.

"She’s sleeping in the living room, on the floor." She said, "She cried for so long and then slept off."

Raymond was silent. The lady he had met was not someone to be easily swayed by little issues. So for her to be broken down to this extent, even drinking in front of her child, something big must’ve happened.

"Alright, I’ll be there first thing tomorrow. So for now, stay with your mother and comfort her as much as you can, okay?"

Rachael sniffed and nodded.

"Okay."

"Rachael, can you send your address to me? Can you do that?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"I can try." She said and cleaned her eyes.

"Alright, that’s good. I’ll come over before you open your eyes from sleep, okay?" He assured and she nodded. "And remember, your mummy loves you. You don’t need to feel scared because she won’t do anything to you and everything will be fine soon, okay?"

"Okay."

Once they cut the call, Raymond quickly called Steve that he was heading out right away.

A shocked Steve asked him,

"Why do you need to go out so late? Can’t it wait till tomorrow?"

"I need to be there very early so I’m setting out right away. Call Mario." he said and Steve just knew he was going to use the helicopter and that was insane. It was almost midnight and he wanted to fly out of the country?

"No, I won’t! Unless you tell me what’s so important and where you’re heading to, I won’t call Mario." Steve said and Raymond answered,

"I’m going to Germany."

"What?! Why?"

"Rachael’s mother seems to be sick and Rachael’s crying." He said and growled. "Now call me Mario."
