Chapter 152: You got me

Alexa brushed her hair aside in an act of frustration and quickly went to the guards who were taking Javen away.

"Wait, what station are you taking him to?" She asked and they answered her. She nodded and they left.

Alexa planned to get to the bottom of all this. If it was indeed Serena that was being all of this, she would then know what to do.

"Mummy?" Rachael called and Alexa turned to her.

"I’m sorry baby, are you scared?"

"No mummy but you look awful." Rachael said, cleaning the sweat off her mother’s forehead. "Are we in trouble?"

"No baby, we’re not in trouble." She said and hugged her. "Baby, let’s play hide the stick."

Rachael’s eyes beamed at the sound of that.

"You know that round little thing that big uncle held just now?" She asked her and Rachael nodded. "Good. Now, that same thing is hidden all over the house so let’s look for them, okay?"

"Okay!" Rachael raised her hand in excitement and scurried away to start looking.

After searching all over, Rachael found five more mini cameras while Alexa found three. They were probably hidden in places that seemed obvious but were at the same time, oblivious.

’Serena.’ Alexa bit her thumb and tsked. She wasn’t going to be played anymore and would resist with all she had.

"Mummy, is the game over?" Rachael asked, breaking Alexa out of her thoughts.

"I think so. Do you see any more of these anywhere?" She asked and Rachael shook her head. She smiled at her and said, "Then I guess it’s over."

"Alright." She said and hopped down from the chair. "I’m going to go wash my hands now."

"Alright dear."

Alexa watched Rachael leave and when she was gone, she went ahead to change the passcode of the door. It didn’t take long and once she was down, she went back into the house, only to see Rachael running to her butt naked while giggling.

"Mummy, mummy." Rachael called, enthusiastically.

"What are you...?" she froze as she saw what was in Rachael’s hand.

"I found another one." Rachael announced.

"Where did you find this?" Alexa asked, taking the mini camera from her.

"It was in the bathroom right behind the soap." Rachael said.

"Which one?" She asked, almost to the point of raising her voice which startled Rachael. Seeing this, Alexa quickly apologized. "Sorry baby, mummy... "

"Mummy, " Rachael called. "...what’s wrong?"

"What do you mean what’s wrong?" Alexa asked, trying to feign a smile.

"Mummy doesn’t easily get anxious. Mummy doesn’t easily lose her cool. And mummy...doesn’t easily have sweat rolling down her forehead every five minutes. So tell me," she took her mother’s hand. "...what happened?"

Alexa was speechless. Her daughter was really something else.

"You got me." Alexa said and then hugged her. "But it’s not something I can easily say. It’s not something a child like you can understand. And even if you do understand, you won’t be able to do anything about it so instead of troubling your little mind, I’d rather play games with you and fix this mess on my own. Is that okay?"

Rachael was silent for a while and then tilted her head to the side,

"Then what happens if an adult tries to help you out?"

"Rachael, this is something you shouldn’t concern yourself with." She said, brushing her hair with her hand. "Don’t worry, I’ll fix everything, okay? But make sure to bring me any of this whenever you find it, okay?"

"Okay, mummy." Rachael answered and wrapped her arms around her neck. "Let me give you as much energy as you need."

"Thanks, baby." She closed her eyes as she sunk into the embrace of her little one.

Rachael was the best thing life ever gave her and she would do everything to keep her safe.

The next day, Alexa drove to work like usual. She wasn’t going to let Serena tag as a quitter.

"I told you to take a rest." Jane flared as she stormed into her office.

"I did plan to rest but then something happened." She said, "I’ll need to leave Rachael in your care for the time being."

"Hold on, tell me what happened?"

Alexa looked over at Rachael who was playing with her tablet and then leaned to whisper in Jane’s ear.

"Javen got caught in my apartment with the mini cameras and was arrested." She whispered and Jane’s eyes widened.

"What?"

"Shhh!" She hushed her and looked over at her daughter who was still paying attention to her tablet.

"How did that happen?" Jane asked in whispers but Alexa shook her head.

"I don’t know the details and that’s why I’m going to the station to ask about it." She said, "So please, keep Rachael safe with you while I’m gone."

"Alright." Jane accepted.

"Rachael." Alexa called and Rachael looked up. "I need you to be very well behaved, okay? Mummy will be gone for an hour or two."

Rachael was silent as she stared at her mummy and then her gaze shifted to Jane.

"With Aunty Jane?" She asked. "Are you going with Aunty Jane?"

"No. Jane’s staying here, with you." Alexa said and Rachael nodded.

"Alright." She said and got down from the couch. She walked towards her mother and smiled. "Come back safely, mummy."

"I will, baby." Alexa said and planted a kiss on her forehead. "Now, be a good girl and don’t wander aimlessly, okay?"

"Yes, mummy."

Alexa picked up her bag and her phone while Jane picked up Rachael’s tablet for her and they all left the office, enabling Alexa to lock the door.

"Okay, I’ll be off." She waved at them and left.

"Little Rachael, it looks like it’s just you and me." Jane said and tittered. Rachael smiled too and said,

"Try not to lose to me this time, aunty Jane." These words made Jane’s smile fall and she said,

"Oh, don’t worry about me. I’m bringing my A game." She boasted, causing Rachael to laugh.

"Alright. Let’s hope so."

Jane looked at Rachael’s pretty face. She was such a smart and adorable little thing. To be able to keep in the sadness while getting bullied, it showed how strong she was from the inside.

’God knows what I would’ve done to those kids if I had been the one to catch them. They’re lucky.’
