Are we ready to go?" Alexa asked and Rachael nodded. After putting Rachael in the car, Alexa turned to Raymond and asked, "Mr Stein, are you really okay with this?"
"Miss Alexa, I am fine." Raymond said while looking at her with sincerity.
This man, why was he fine with it? He was so relaxed and easy going, unlike the first time they met? Could she consider this as a sign of her treatment working?
"I like your daughter and like how she gives my mind peace with light sunshine rays." Raymond added and Alexa’s thoughts took note. "I would like to spend more time with her before I leave so please be at ease." He said. "And for all I know, this might be our last time seeing each other. It’s not yet known if I can continue coming for the therapy and even if you accept my offer and come to my country, I am not a hundred percent sure you will bring her along so let me use the little time I have with her." He smiled faintly and got in the car.
Alexa pondered on his words. So he liked her daughter that much? Why was that? Was it because she was ’her’ daughter? Did it make him feel like he was spending time with his should’ve-been child?
Her thoughts were a wreck but she quickly shoved them away. The types of intrusive thoughts she was having were not normal.
She gave out a sigh and finally got in the car with them.
They took Alexa’s car because Raymond’s was bound to attract unwanted attention.
Alexa drove and every now and then, she would glance at the two who were losing themselves in their own world. How were they getting along so well?
A nagging feeling. Alexa was having a nagging feeling. Was Rachael scheming something?
They got to the aquarium and contrary to what Alexa thought, it was pretty empty. There weren’t many people even when it was a weekend.
’Well, it’s a good thing. I wouldn’t want to cause Raymond Stein any form of discomfort.’ She thought and looked at the two and smiled. "Then, shall we?"
The aquarium was a rather big place and anyone could get lost there so Alexa made sure to keep an eye on Rachael. They got their tickets and waited for the tour guide to take them around.
Even when dressed a bit plainly, Raymond still had a knack for attracting attention. It was already bothering how everyone has their eyes on the tall handsome guy holding a kid.
Even Rachael noticed it and she came up with an idea.
"Mummy, look over there."
They all looked at where she was pointing, only to see a few dolphin masks.
"Let’s all wear that, mummy." She said and looked up at Raymond. "Would you like to try one, mister?"
"Alright."
They all got a mask and Rachael giggled.
"We’re the dolphin rangers." She screamed and Alexa laughed.
"That’s too much." She said, "But how are you going to fight crime with that little body of yours?" She liked her belly and Rachael giggled.
"Hehe, the mister is big enough to fight for both of us." She said and faced him. "Right, mister? You’ll fight the bad guy in my place."
"Of course." He smiled solemnly. "I will fight for you."
Alexa noticed that the atmosphere shifted a bit and watched them. Raymond was smiling but that did not hide the hurt he felt. He probably wanted to say those words to his child but couldn’t.
Was this really the right thing to do? Giving him such memories to think about. Wouldn’t it just make him feel more restless?
In any case, she was glad they were having fun together. She was probably overthinking things. What Raymond needed all along must’ve been some sort of distraction to occupy his empty heart.
"Mummy." Rachael called and once again, she snapped out of her straying thoughts. "What are you waiting for? Let’s go."
Alexa touched her head and managed to smile. She was having a strange headache.
"I’m coming." She said and caught up with them.
"You seem distracted." Raymond said to her and she looked up at him. He hasn’t said anything to her in particular since they got in the car. Was he watching her all along? Well, why wouldn’t he? She was carrying this face afterall.
She shook her head.
"Then are you okay?" He asked further and once again she shook her head.
"I’m fine."
Rachael signaled for Raymond to put her down for a sec and he did. She got close to the glass and glued her face to it.
"Wow." She marveled and the two watched with smiles.
"It’s just..." Alexa continued as she stared down at little Rachael directing all her focus on the fishes and gently patted her head. "...I feel a bit insecure."
She immediately realized what she said and wondered why she said that outloud. Luckily Rachael wasn’t paying attention but that couldn’t be said for Raymond. He what’s it loud and clear.
"Are you scared that I’ll take your daughter away from you?" he asked and she flinched.
"No, nothing like that. My insecurities don’t have anything to do with that." She defended. "If anything, I’m scared that... " she paused and rephrased her words. "I was scared that she was growing too fast and she always worried for me, what I would feel and that I would take her actions as burdening but with you... she’s acting her age. She’s laughing and though I don’t know if it’s an act, she’s a really good actress, trust me." She sighed. "I hope it’s not an act and if it isn’t, I would like to say thank you for bringing out the child in her."
Alexa smiled warmly and Raymond found himself reaching his hand out for her. Her hair was short and it would definitely dance easily if there was wind. He stormed the edges, lightly pushing it aside.
A closer look at her face and he could look deep into her eyes. Those eyes... Why in the world did they look like Ariel’s? Wasn’t this sort of resemblance too much?
He gritted his teeth and took back his hand. He was crossing the line again.
"Sir Raymond." Alexa suddenly called and his eyes widened, shaking as he turned back to look at her. "Can I call you that?" She brushed her hair swishly and looked at him with a look of confidence. "We aren’t working right now so I figured we should drop the formalities a little and..."
"Stop." He said and covered his face. "Don’t call me that. You can call me anything but that."
Looking at his reaction, Alexa could immediately guess why he said that.
’So that’s what she usually called him, hm?’ She looked aside. She didn’t want to be affected but she couldn’t exactly control her feelings.
"Mummy, look at that." Rachael excitedly pointed at the group of yellow fishes moving in a school formation. "They’re so pretty."
"Yes, they are." She smiled back and looked over at Raymond. He still looked a little out of it.
They moved on from there and got to a kiddies water slide and a pool. The end of the slide was connected to a little pool which would soften the children’s landing from the slide.
Alexa thought that such a thing would not excite Rachael but to her surprise, she saw Rachael jumping up in excitement and saying she wanted to get on.
Seriously, what was up with her daughter? She was like a completely different person.
"We didn’t come with your swimsuit, dear." Alexa said and Rachael grinned..
"They’re selling one over there." She pointed and Alexa realized that her daughter didn’t change. She was just letting herself lose.
"Alright."
As per her request, they bought a swimsuit for her and watched her as she got on the slide.
"Please hold this for a second." Alexa said, handing over her purse to Raymond to hold while she took up her phone to take a pic of Rachael on the slide. "Look over here, Rachael. I’m going to take a nice picture of you, okay?"
Rachael smiled with all her teeth on display. She was happy. She felt happy. Not only was her mother there spending time with her, a handsome uncle was also with them and she felt connected to him. She was happy spending time with him and she thought, ’if my real daddy wasn’t dead then I’d suspect him to be my daddy’.
But this thought also incited another thought and she grinned.
’What if I make him my daddy?’ She looked at the two who were watching her. ’Mummy is still so young and pretty and that handsome mister is just so handsome. They look so good together. They’ll fit perfectly as a married couple.’
Snickering at her own thoughts, Rachael happily slid down the slide. The water splashes were refreshing to the children who were in the pool and the parents made sure to watch carefully.
