I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 135: I still have some time before my flight
The both of them remained silent for about a minute. While Raymond contemplated on what to do, Rachael’s face beamed in excited anticipation. She really wanted him to go with them.
Though he was a total stranger, she knew he was a good person. Nothing beats her gut feeling.
"So, will you?" She asked, taping the ends of her fingers together.
"Little girl, I don’t think that’s appropriate." Raymond said. "Your mother might feel uncomfortable with me since I am a stranger. And she loves you." He gently stroked her hair. "She will definitely not want to put you in harm’s way by letting a stranger accompany you two out on your fun day. So I’m sorry."
"It’s alright." Rachael said, looking a little disappointed. "But, if my mummy agrees, will you do it?"
Raymond looked at her briefly before shutting his eyes. Why in the world was this little girl so adamant on getting a total stranger to spend time with her and her mother? Was she lacking affection because it was only her mom taking care of her? Or was she simply curious as to how a company of three spent time together?
But one thing was for sure, she really liked him. He didn’t know why but her expression said it all.
Anyway, he knew her mother would definitely not let a total stranger tag along so, he played it by the tooth.
"Alright." He said and her face beamed even brighter.
"Yay." She flung herself on him and he hugged her. "Thank you, mister."
’I only said I would. It’s not confirmed yet if her mother will let me.’ Raymond thought as he stroked her hair. There was no denying that the best way of comfort is through a hug. He felt at ease with the hug. It was warm.
’’This mister has such wide shoulders.’ Rachael thought and closed her eyes. ’I like this feeling.’ She opened her eyes and saw her mother. "There she is now." She raised her head from Raymond’s shoulder and called out. "Mummy."
Raymond let her down first and she ran over to her mummy. He turned around, only to see that the mother of this little girl was Alexa. Was that really the little girl’s mother? Or was the mother behind her?
He watched as Alexa closed in on them and immediately took Rachael in her arms.
"Oh, Rachael, my baby. You made me worried." She said, hugging her with all that she had.
"Sorry mummy but I did get something nice." Rachael said and Alexa wondered what it was.
"What...?"
"I got us an extra company to go with us to the aquarium." She delightfully said but Alexa was still confused.
"An extra company? Rachael, what are you talking about?" She asked and Raymond stepped forward.
"I believe that would be me." She looked at him and almost gasped.
"You... Mr Stein, what are you doing here?"
"I was on my way out when I bumped into your daughter. She wanted me to go with her to see fishes because I was ’sad’ and I decided to just agree with the thought that her mother would never agree to it and here we are." Raymond concluded.
Alexa was speechless. Rachael did what? Did she know who this was?
"She’s adorably persistent." Raymond added and smiled.
Alexa was still a little confused. Did he agree to go with them simply to appease the child? And was that a smile she saw on his face just now? Seems like he liked Rachael.
"First of all, I would like to apologize to you. I had no idea Rachael was going to approach a stranger. She should know better than that. I’m so sorry please do not take offense and if you do, I will take responsibility for your delayed time." Alexa swiftly apologized.
"It’s okay." Raymond said, looking at Rachael. "She meant no harm. Rachael, was it? That’s a beautiful name."
"Thank you." Rachael said, bowing her head. She felt sad about the whole thing all of a sudden. Not only was she not going to spend time with that stranger but her mummy was also apologizing because of her. It made her feel like she really did burden her.
Raymond saw that Rachael was feeling bad and he didn’t want to complicate things so he said to Alexa,
"I still have some time before my flight." She looked at him. "If it’s okay with you, I can spend the first two hours with you. Rachael seems to have gotten sad about the whole thing."
"Please, Mr Stein, you don’t have to make a compromise for my daughter’s whimsical acts. She’ll be fine."
"Oh, but I insist." Raymond said. "In all honesty, I simply want to spend more time with your daughter. She’s adorable."
"But... "
"Mummy." Rachael called and they both looked down at her. "Sorry for acting out again." She said, "But can we let this mister go with us? Please, mummy?" Her eyes transformed into cute and irresistible puppy eyes as she pleaded with all the cuteness she had.
Alexa could not resist it and she gave in.
"Alright." She said and looked over at Raymond. "As long as Mr Stein is okay with it, we can go to the aquarium together."
"Yay!" Rachael cheered and jumped from her mother’s arms and into Raymond’s.
Luckily, he caught her well and she hugged him.
"Rachael, you should behave." Alexa said but Rachael was too far into the clouds to even think about that.
"Thank you, mister." She said and laughed cheerfully. "And thank you mummy."
’Why is she so excited about this?’ Alexa wondered a bit worriedly. She looked at Raymond. He didn’t look uncomfortable with the idea and was actually smiling.
Maybe she could just think about this as an extensive therapy session and using other means to put his mind at ease. Yes, if she thought about it like that, she wouldn’t feel too uncomfortable or guilty... right?
"Alright. Let’s go now before this handsome mister changes his mind." Rachael roared with so much enthusiasm that they were both forced to laugh.
"Okay, let’s go."
Jane saw Alexa returning to her office and hurried towards her. Alexa’s face was bowed so she wondered if she was still looking for Rachael.
"Have you found her?" She asked and Alexa nodded. "Really? Where was she? I swear I checked everywhere."
"She was with Raymond Stein." Alexa said and opened her office door.
Jane stood in place, speechless. She looked at Alexa who looked a little worried.
"Did she offend Raymond Stein?" She asked and Alexa turned to her, shaking her head.
"No, she didn’t. But she somehow convinced him to come with us to the aquarium." She awkwardly said and Jane’s eyes widened.
"What?!" She exclaimed. "How did that happen? Does that mean he’s going with you to the aquarium?"
"That’s what I just said." Alexa said and sighed. She looked stressed.
"What’s bothering you?"
"I’m not too into taking my patient out on a fun day out with my daughter." She said, "I’m not against it either but my conscience continuously pricks at me."
"I don’t see anything wrong there. What’s the matter?"
"Jane, this is a man whose dead wife has been haunting his dreams for the past five years and I... I look so much like that dead wife." Alexa said and massaged her temple, feeling stressed.
"But he’s not uncomfortable with the idea so why should you?" Jane asked her. "Let me tell you, one person’s awkwardness makes the whole room awkward. If you just take it as trying to relieve his stress and return his peace of mind, then you’ll be fine."
"I know. I understand that he might want to spend time with us to take his mind off things and appease Rachael’s persistence but..." she paused and pursed her lips. "I don’t get why Rachael is so attached to him. She never gets attached to strangers. In fact, she doesn’t attach herself to anyone other than me."
"Maybe because he’s too handsome to resist, even for Rachael." Jane said and laughed but Alexa still couldn’t take it lightly. Rachael was not a superficial child.
Alexa took her things and went down. She met Raymond and Rachael at the entrance of the hospital and from the looks of it, they were having a fun conversation because they were both laughing.
She watched Raymond. He seemed so fond of Rachael already.
Seriously, why was her daughter so attached?
She had never seen her smiling so joyously before. She looked carefree. She looked like the child she was.
Alexa watched them for a while. From all angles, they looked like a father daughter combination. They looked so good together and they also looked alike.
She immediately shook her head. What was she thinking about? They weren’t related in any way. And this was a one time thing so they wouldn’t meet again. After this, they would...
"Mummy." Rachael called, jolting Alexa out of her thoughts. "Come quick."
Alexa collected her thoughts properly and walked towards them.
"Are we ready to go?" She asked and Rachael nodded. After putting Rachael in the car, Alexa turned to Raymond and asked, "Mr Stein, are you really okay with this?"
"Miss Alexa, I am fine." He said and got in the car.
Alexa gave out a sigh and also got in the car.
