I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 118: The dark space with little lighting
The CCTV weren’t much help but they were able to get a little detail on their direction. Skylar wired Raymond’s phone while they searched, hoping Theo would call once again and they would be able to track him.
Restless, anxious and worried, Raymond drove towards the direction Theo was seen.
"This is crazy." Skylar exclaimed. "That guy’s a psychopath."
Raymond’s grip tightened on the wheels as he increased his speed. And then, his phone rang.
It was Steve.
Raymond picked up, only to hear bad news.
"I’m so sorry, but we lost him." He said, referring to White who had given up the ghost.
Raymond immediately hit the brakes and listened to what he had to say.
"He lost too much blood and the bullet was in too deep, it damaged his arteries too seriously. I... I couldn’t save him." He sounded disappointed in himself and Raymond gritted his teeth. "But before he died, he asked me to tell you this. ’I mean it when I say I regret it. I am sorry for any harm. I hope my death offsets all that I did wrong, though my flimsy life doesn’t really carry much value. Good luck, I wish you happiness’." Steve concluded and rubbed his eyes beneath his glasses.
He took off the glasses and wiped the little traces of tears he had with his sleeve and placed the phone back on his ear.
"How’s the search going?" He asked.
"I’m still looking." He said and Steve fell silent for a second.
"Raymond, whatever happens, it’s not your fault." He suddenly said, "So, keep your head straight, okay?"
Raymond was silent for a moment as his mind wandered elsewhere. He parted hair lips and spoke,
"I’m hanging up." With that, he cut the call and gripped the steering wheel. "He’s dead." He muttered.
"That other guy... ?" Skylar asked halfway and Raymond solemnly nodded. "There’s nothing you can do about it. Now, let’s focus on finding Ariel."
Raymond nodded and was just about to hit the gears when his phone rang again. They both looked at it and saw it was Ariel calling which meant...
Skylar nodded his head and immediately connected the tracking device to the phone before Raymond picked up.
"You must be really anxious right now, right?" He asked, grinning proudly. "You want to find your wife so bad, don’t you? Well, why don’t I be a saint and show her to you one last time? It’s almost twelve anyway so I’ll show you my new year’s generosity in advance." He chuckled and put the phone on video call.
The dark space with little lighting showed Ariel tied to a chair with her mouth sealed with a tape and tears brimming down her eyes like water.
Raymond’s body shook at the sight and his fury hit the roof of his car.
"Bastard." He cussed. "What did you do?"
"Oh, nothing yet but she got a little annoying with her words so I shut her up." Theo said and tittered. "The clock is ticking." He said and moved closer to Ariel, showing the bomb tied to her leg and Raymond’s eyes widened. " See this, I’m about to set off the world’s loudest fireworks. It’s gonna be a blast." He laughed and smirked. "Tick tock, once it’s twelve, this baby is going to go kaboom. Hahaha." He laughed and showed Ariel’s face one more time.
Raymond looked at that painful and desperate cry for help. This wasn’t just her life they were talking about there. It had to do with both her and the unborn child. Both their lives were at risk.
At this point, if he was asked to choose one of the two, he would choose Ariel. A baby could always be made a second time but she was one person. One precious person. He couldn’t let her die. But that wasn’t the case. He wasn’t given an option here.
"I got the location." Skylar announced and Raymond immediately hit the gear, heading to that spot as fast as he could.
It was a long drive but he hoped, no, he prayed to get there on time.
Meanwhile, Paige had her head bowed to the floor. She was on her knees and was desperately hoping for her grandfather to lend a hand. But this old man was acting indifferent to this situation like she, Ariel, was a complete stranger.
"Go back." He said, not bothering to turn and look at her. "This matter concerns me not." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Aunty... Now I know why you tried so hard to get away from this family." Paige muttered to herself and finally raised her head.
Many thought the last child and precious daughter of the Winston family had everything. She was living the life of a princess, having everything and getting showered with attention but on the inside, she was dying.
The indifference her own father showed her was too much to handle and that was why she went out and fell for the little bit of affection given to her. She wasn’t just a hopeless romantic who fell for the wrong guy, she was a lost child without the love of a parent.
"So it doesn’t bother you that your granddaughter, the child of the daughter whom you abandoned, will be killed tonight?" She asked him but he gave no response. "Ah, I understand." She gradually stood up and turned her back on him. "Name, wealth, status and connections. That’s all you care about. Go ahead and carry this godforsaken family with you to your grave. I hope you burn together."
She left there and walked out looking pissed. Her younger cousin was about to die and yet their grandfather wasn’t going to do a thing about it. He had all the connection, all the power. All he needed to do was make a simple phone call and she would be found in an instant, yet he refuses to lift even one finger.
Ariel’s mother... she must’ve felt so bitter when she realized the man she loved had cheated her. Did she come to her father for help? Did he reject her and send her away?
"How cruel?" She exclaimed.
At the door was Maxwell, her fiance. She completely forgot that she planned to count with him seconds to the new year.
"Maxwell, sorry but I’m a bit occupied."
"It’s alright. I heard what happened." He said.
As understanding as he looked, he was quite crafty and one could not easily tell what he had in mind. He was the perfect definition of a green snake in a green field but she liked him that way. Honest guys were quite boring.
"I need to head out." She said,
Being too late isn’t really a person’s fault. There are times when you try your hardest to make the right choice and avoid making mistakes but the inevitable cannot be cheated.
Many times, one tries to love, many times, one tries to hate. But in the long run, the universe is made with just the right amount of hate and love to keep it from falling apart. The right amount of deaths and births to keep it balanced. And the right amount of tears and laughs to keep life going.
On this very night where many laughed and sang in merry, there were those who wept in agony and despair over a loss of a loved one or for another reason.
And among those who wept in bitter agony, this very night, was Raymond.
