I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 101: You’ve already hurt her once
Back at Raymond’s mansion, White had been kept in the woodshed. At times they would leave him dangling from the ceiling and at other times, they would let him go and simply chain his hands and feet to prevent him from escaping.
White stared blankly at the wall. His appearance was a bit haggard and his white hair, dirty. How many days had he been locked in there? He couldn’t tell.
Probably outside, Raymond was crushing their enemies ruthlessly and leaving them no room to recover from the shock. He was supposed to be standing right next to him and enjoy the victory with a proud grin but here he was, chained and treated like a traitor because of the mistakes he made.
He wouldn’t even try to make up an excuse or put reason behind his actions. All he did was out of his own selfish and twisted desire so there was no excuse.
He heard the door open but he did not move from his position and moped at the wall.
’Is it time for the afternoon torture?’ He wondered with lazy eyes but then he heard a feminine voice.
"White." His eyes widened. What was she doing here? "Can we talk?"
Clanking sounds caused by the chains clashing together rang but no words were heard from White. He remained silent. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Raymond stood still with his arms folded. He kept his gaze on White whose back view looked heavy and drained. His eyebrows furrowed. The last time he saw him like this was when Serena still had him in her custody. Pitiful.
Ariel turned to Raymond.
"He won’t say anything." Raymond said but Ariel gave him a certain look that he immediately understood. "No, don’t even think about it."
"Just let me speak to him alone."
"No."
Raymond was seriously against it. Though there was no sign of hostility and the probability of White harming Ariel were low, he couldn’t be certain that nothing would happen if he left them alone.
"Ariel, I can’t let you be here with him alone." Raymond said.
Solemnly, Ariel glanced back at White. His back side that looked heavy also seemed to look sad. She wanted to know why he did what he did. He wasn’t evil, he wasn’t a bad person. And that was why she felt even more obligated to know his reasons.
But it didn’t look like White would talk to her with Raymond around. She wasn’t even sure that he would talk to her if they were alone but she still wanted to try.
"Please, Raymond." Ariel pleaded with gentle eyes. "Let me talk to him alone. Even if he does try to harm me, he won’t be able to kill me."
"I still won’t allow it."
"Please." She repeatedly pleaded, almost to the point of screaming. "He’s your friend." She said out of nowhere. "You too want to know why he did it, don’t you? It’s painful as it is so please..." She briefly pursed her lips and said, "Allow me."
"How are you certain that he will speak to you?" He asked and Ariel shook her head.
"I’m not but... I want to try. Please, allow me to try."
A little silence followed and then, Raymond let out a heavy sigh. With gritted teeth, he looked over at White.
"You’ve already hurt her once. If you have even a heart, even if it’s tiny, you won’t hurt her a second time. If you do..." His clenched fists trembled. "...I definitely won’t forgive you."
He turned to Ariel, kissed her forehead and said,
"If you feel him getting hostile, scream out. I’ll come in right away." Ariel nodded to this and with hesitation, Raymond left the place.
Once Raymond was gone, Ariel turned to face White. There were so many things she wanted to ask but she couldn’t bring herself to utter a word.
She liked White. She liked him as a person, a friend and when she kept yapping about the things she liked and disliked, even if he didn’t respond to her and stayed silent most of the time, he was still there. His presence... Made her feel okay. He was like a friend.
A ghost friend. A sad smile played on her lips. What happened? Maybe she was the only one who thought positively about the other but still... What happened?
They stayed like that in silence and White almost assumed she went out with Raymond.
Ariel walked closer towards him and sat on the floor, staring at his back side with no words said, just silence.
Ariel had no problem staying there in silence. She could think about a lot of things to keep her mind busy and dwell in her own little world. Since he didn’t want to talk, she would play dumb with him as well.
White started getting uncomfortable. What did she plan to achieve by sitting in silence behind him?
’Just go away.’ White scolded within and as if hearing his thoughts, Ariel decided to finally say something.
"White." She called.
’What does she want?’
"Are you thirsty?" She asked, to his surprise. "I heard you refuse to drink water. If I’m going to ask you questions, I might as well make it comfortable for you to speak, right?"
Gentle clanks rang from the chains after her words and once again, silence followed.
Fed up with the silence and her uncomforting presence behind him, White decided to speak.
"What do you want from me?" His voice sounded dull and dry because of the dryness of his throat. It didn’t sound as fluent and confident as the way he used to speak on a daily basis and that felt bitter.
It felt bitter to Ariel. No matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t understand why he did that.
"What do you think I want from you?" Ariel asked him. "I’m sitting here, patiently waiting for you to open up. What do you think I want to hear from you?"
White’s eyes rolled down and he fixed his eyes on his chains.
"I’m not going to say anything, if you want to ask me the reason I betrayed the Boss." He said and as if she expected that response, Ariel nodded and closed her eyes.
"It’s okay." She said, "You might not have anything to tell me but I do." She added and opened her eyes. " I said I was coming here to interrogate you but I actually came because I needed someone to talk to."
"What?" He almost turned around.
Ariel folded her knees up and hugged them, resting her chin on the top of her knees.
"You know, there have been a lot of people around me lately but there really isn’t anyone to talk to. I have these nice neighbors who smile at me and give me nice things. They send me cheers with big smiles like they were being paid to do it. I know it’s their nature, they’re good people and they probably never had to struggle to live but staying around such people, my life feels so unreal." She paused as her eyes glazed away from his back to the door and then she continued. "I’ve passed through so much in life and I just can’t seem to get comfortable when someone says thank you, brings me an apple pie filled with gratitude, a flower pot and so many more. It’s unreal."
"Would you rather be surrounded by evil people then?" White asked her in a bitter tone and she tore her gaze from the door, turning towards him.
"I would rather be surrounded by people who know very clearly that the world isn’t as easy as it seems. And when putting your foot on a flower path, you should always beware of thorns. Pretty things can kill, you know?"
