[Damon]

He didn’t know how it took all day to get ready or why the fuck he had to stay away from his mate. Sure, it was tradition and everything, but they weren’t humans, and it was stupid. So, so stupid.

Damon moped around just thinking of it. Darius growled in agreement. They’d spent a few days cuddling, or in this case, he was cuddling Aila, who had looked positively shattered from the short time she had put this together and easily fell asleep in his arms with a slight snore.

It had been adorable listening to her, but Damon would never tell her she snored. Aila would get embarrassed, and there was no need to be. She’d been working her sweet ass off. As long as his mate was happy by the end of this, then he was happy.

After everything they had been through, they deserved this. Something as simple as a date was interrupted by the new sect of hunters, and sure, Damon fucked the brains out of Aila in that sexy little outfit of hers after it all, but the point of it was to do normal stuff.

With their status and the new packs that would go under their control, he wasn’t sure when they would spend quality time together.

Damon would ensure they would always find time for each other with the new workload. He noticed Aila worked on very little sleep now as well. It had to be a part of the vampire in her. So that was a bonus, not that he would let her take on more work.

But it was one less thing for him to worry about. Overworking and tiring his mate out. Aila was still technically new to it all. As much as she acts like a Luna with many years of experience, he has to remind himself that she isn’t.

Damon was so proud of her and the obstacles she’d overcome, but she was still young. He was as well. They were one of the youngest Alpha Kings and Queens in history. The youngest before that was around mid-thirties which was still quite young.

Considering the recent events, they didn’t have to prove anything to the other Alphas and packs.

"Yo, you can’t come in after the bride!" Ajax burst open the bedroom door in the guest house Damon was temporarily residing in.

"What have you been doing, pretty boy?" Ajax came up to the Alpha, who had been staring at his suit in the mirror, his hair stylishly messy, just how Aila liked it. The shapeshifter assessed Damon, turning him around by the shoulders to face him.

Ajax would have been pushed away if he had done such a thing a few months ago. In fact, the shapeshifter wouldn’t be with Damon; he would be with Aila. They always seemed to be close. It was something that used to get on his nerves, and Ajax would purposely act in a way to get to him.

But the time away from his mate somehow put them closer together as well. It was annoying. Still, Damon allowed the shapeshifter to brush down his shoulders and adjust his steel silver tie to match his eyes.

"Are we done, sweetheart?" Damon mocked, his lips matching Ajax’s responding smirk.

"Better. You look more presentable for your Queen." Ajax patted his back, and the pair started to leave the room. Once they were out of the house, Damon felt the slightest shift of nerves as he looked at the night sky. It was their choice to wait until dark until the moon was bright in the sky overhead.

That provided the day for their ceremony and food to be ready for the whole pack and the other guests invited. The guys who had been with him all day left earlier to get ready. Damon didn’t think it would take that long, but then he remembered Gabriel would return to his Esme, and they’d most likely get distracted; he internally rolled his eyes at that but smiled genuinely at the same time.

Aldric and Harry seemed like besties, with Harry being quite similar to Ajax with his chirpy ways, though his humour was a little darker, which matched his scarred features and roguish ways. Aldric also had his pups to look after, who were still adjusting to the pack, and not on human schedules.

Sure, the pups still went to bed earlier, but most attended when there were pack ceremonies early enough into the night. The pack was like one big family, even if there were a few fights, but who didn’t have some sort of family drama? Soon, Rex and Elissa would adjust and attend just like the friends they were already making.

Kane hadn’t been with him all day, which surprised Damon but then he found out his Beta was helping out for the wedding, organising everything efficiently. Or so Chiara had told the Alpha. It seems the pack leaders discussed it among themselves to arrange it between them. They didn’t want Aila or Damon involving themselves too much so it was still a bit of a surprise when they arrived at the venue.

Damon and Ajax started entering the woods. The pair had plastic bags around their snazzy designer shoes so as not to get them muddy before the ceremony. Damon wanted it to be perfect for his mate, even down to the last detail, such as their shoes.

He didn’t care if they got muddy. In fact, he wouldn’t mind being barefoot. The feeling of his feet sinking into the earth was heavenly to Damon and his wolf, and he knew it was the same for most werewolves. They loved nature and couldn’t stay away from it long, which was why most packs lived in forests or the countryside. It was rare for a pack to live in a city. Not unheard of, though.

Damon was aware of a few. Many rogues passed through them as well to avoid big packs. Esme lived with Gabriel in the city, but it was fortunate for her to have a valley nearby.

Now, Damon stood before the area the ceremony was set up. He was slightly gobsmacked with how quickly it had been put together. Aila would love it. He knew she wanted a church wedding growing up, and of course, that dream altered once her memories returned and she was a werewolf once more.

What they’d set up was perfect for both lives she had lived.

Of the old and new, the past and present.

Beta Kane approached him; he was already dressed up, his hair in its usual bun. Damon’s was long enough to do that now, but he knew Aila would prefer it down. He wouldn’t complain when she ran her fingers through it. Besides, he and his wolf also liked it, feeling the wind blow through it.

"How does it look?" Kane asked. He looked smug, but there was still apprehension in his gaze as he rubbed his hands together, smiling broadly.

Damon nodded. "It looks great." He then turned his attention to some guests already sitting on the tree logs created into benches. "You all did great. Thank you."

The pack members bared their necks to him.

Damon grinned, rolling back his shoulders as he walked down the candlelit aisle.

It was time to marry his mate.
