Chapter 67: Didn’t Tell Her... Again...

AIDEN’S POV

The moment Jasmine said her name, everything changed.

The circle lit up brighter than before. The runes flared. The sagewood fire snapped in the wind that hadn’t been there a moment ago.

And Jasmine screamed.

I moved to step forward, but Alara blocked me with one hand. "Wait—" she said.

She didn’t finish the sentence.

Because Jasmine rose.

Not to her feet, but into the air.

She floated inches above the stone floor, suspended by power alone. Her head tilted back, eyes squeezed shut, but glowing silver beneath. Her hair whipped in the wind, lashes of energy flickering around her.

"She’s levitating," one of the elders murmured. "That’s not in the script."

"She’s not stabilising," Alara muttered. "Something’s wrong."

"I’m going to her," I said.

Alara didn’t stop me this time.

I stepped into the circle of runes, and it felt like something strong and intense slammed into me. The energy surged all around us, and Jasmine was at the heart of it; she looked like she was struggling.

Her body shook, her mouth was wide open as if she was screaming, but no sound came out, and her hands were curled tightly like claws.

"Jasmine," I said, reaching for her.

The second my fingers touched her arm, the circle exploded with light. I yanked her down into my arms just as her body gave out. She collapsed against me, weightless but thrumming with energy.

Her skin felt hot, not like a fever, but as if it were burning. Her body twitched, and her nails had become longer and sharper. She growled softly in her sleep, short bursts of sound as if her inner wolf was struggling to break free.

"She’s caught mid-transition," Alara said, kneeling beside us. "The seal shattered too quickly. Her spirit is trying to adjust."

"Can we stop it?" I asked.

"We can only contain it. If we try to suppress it now, it’ll damage her permanently."

Jasmine twisted in my arms. Her face twisted, too. Her breathing came in short, hard bursts.

"She’s hurting."

"She’s becoming," Alara corrected.

I sat down, holding her steady. "She shouldn’t have done this alone."

"She didn’t," Alara said quietly. "You’re here."

I watched her chest rise and fall in erratic rhythm. The runes began to dim. The elders chanted softer now, pulling energy back instead of feeding it in.

I didn’t speak again for a long time.

Night came quickly, but the moon shone brightly, refusing to let darkness take over. I lifted her from the clearing once it was safe. Alara used old root salves and murmured chants to help balance her energy. Kaiden cleared the path ahead to keep us out of sight.

Instead of going to the packhouse, we headed home.

Our real home.

The one she hadn’t set foot in since that night.

I brought her to her bedroom. I had it cleaned up and arranged in preparation for when she would come back. She twitched once as I laid her down, muttering something I didn’t catch.

Her hand gripped the blanket instinctively.

"She’s still caught between phases," Alara said from the doorway. "But she’s grounding. That’s a good sign."

I nodded.

"She’ll sleep through the night. Maybe longer. Let her."

"And when she wakes?"

"You’ll know," Alara said. "Try to get some sleep too, Alpha."

Then she left me alone.

I sat on the edge of the bed, watching her breathe.

Her body had stopped trembling. Whatever storm she’d fought in that circle had eased, for now. But I could still feel it in the air around her... the energy, the shift.

She wasn’t the same anymore. And she never would be again.

I leaned forward and gently adjusted the pillow beneath her head. Her brow was still pinched, like her body hadn’t caught up with the calm. I reached out and carefully brushed her hair away from her face. The strands were damp with sweat and clung to her skin.

She looked peaceful now, but I knew that peace was temporary.

Everything had changed. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

I ran my knuckles along her jaw, stopping before I could really touch her. My fingers curled back.

"You probably can’t hear me," I said quietly. "And maybe it’s better that way."

I shifted closer, elbows resting on my knees, my voice low. "I’m sorry, Jasmine. For all of it. I didn’t mean to lose control. I didn’t mean to... scare you."

My throat tightened. I dropped my gaze to her hands, one resting on her stomach, the other curled into the blanket like she was still fighting something in her sleep.

"I’ve never felt fear like that before," I admitted. "Not fear of losing you... but fear of becoming something you couldn’t trust. And that happened. Because I let it happen."

I swallowed the tight knot that had been living in my chest since that night.

"I didn’t mean to hurt you. And I won’t. Not ever again. Not on purpose. Even if you never come back to me, even if you walk away when this is over, I’ll still keep you safe. That’s the only promise I can make right now that I know I won’t break."

I exhaled and reached down to pull the blanket higher around her shoulders. Her body instinctively shifted toward the warmth.

I leaned back and let the silence stretch. But in the quiet, something stirred.

Ace.

His voice was low, tired, but present in my mind.

"You remember when she asked if there were more surprises?" he said.

I closed my eyes. "Yeah."

"And you told her you’d ease her into it. That you’d tell her in time."

"I didn’t lie."

"You didn’t tell her either."

I ran a hand down my face. "She wasn’t ready."

"No. You weren’t."

I gritted my teeth, but didn’t argue.

"You kept the curse from her. You thought if you could control it long enough, maybe things would gradually play out well."

"I was trying to protect her."

"And now look at her."

That hit harder than it should have.

"I know."

"You don’t get to say you’re sorry if you’re still lying. Even to yourself."

"I wasn’t trying to lie. I thought I could handle it."

"No, you didn’t think. You assumed."

I looked at her again. She was still. But stronger now. Even asleep, there was power around her.

"I should’ve told her everything from the start."

"Yes."

Ace didn’t say anything else. He didn’t need to.

I stood, pulled the blanket higher over her shoulder, and tucked it in at her side. Her body turned slightly, like she felt it. Like she knew I was still here.

"I’ll be right here," I said, softer this time. "When you wake up. No more lies. No more waiting."

I walked to the armchair in the corner and sat down.

And I waited.

Not for forgiveness.

For her.

Hours passed. I didn’t move. Just listened.

At one point, Kaiden messaged to ask how Jasmine is doing. I sent a quick reply, telling him nothing yet, but we’d know when she wakes up.

I checked my notifications but ignored everything on them. Nothing mattered more than the girl sleeping in my bed, her body still pulsing with low, untamed power.

As I noticed her fingers twitching again, this time more slowly, I leaned in closer.

Her lips opened slightly, and I could hear her breathing shift. I didn’t say a word or make any sudden movements; I simply watched her.

I saw her eyelids flutter, and at last, she woke up.
