Chapter 37- The Estate (Part 4)

The dark sky above them had been covered in a thick layer of grey clouds for the best part of the entire day. It was as if the weather itself knew what was going to happen today, and it grieved the countless souls lost.

Rein looked up, his eyes serene and yet lost as he basked in the feeling. This was the very first moment of peace he had had since everything happened. It had been merely a day... No, less than a day, and yet, it felt like he had aged years in this day alone.

The things he experienced and the stuff he did eclipsed entire years’ worth of his life, which was why his mind was in such a chaotic state. He was dealing with everything rather well, and his monstrous ability to adapt and survive was unrivaled, but he simply couldn’t avoid the mental struggles that come with facing such a whole new world.

What did the future hold for him? Was this it? Will he just fight monsters and get stronger? Was that truly the end of everything?

Rein didn’t feel that way. Even though he only had his gut feeling to answer, he felt like all of these major changes, all these abnormal mutations, the Undead, the system, and everything else... It felt like it all built up toward something... Something far bigger than anything that has happened so far.

’All of this doesn’t feel like the conclusion. It feels more like preparation for something else. Something far more intriguing.’ Rein closed his eyes as he suddenly felt a droplet of water fall on his face.

"Hm, it’s about to rain." He said.

Violet stared up and nodded as she let the water slowly fall on her face. "Rein in the rain... That sounds really poetic, doesn’t it?" She asked.

"Hm, it does." He replied with a faint hum. The two stood there, silent, not needing to say anything. Both needed a moment to gather their thoughts, and the rain, as much as it was gloomy, washed away their worry for a fleeting moment.

"You know..." Violet finally parted her lips and spoke. "I am glad that all of this is at least happening when you’re with me, Rein."

"Hm?" Rein opened his eyes and looked down at her. "What do you mean?"

"I mean... If all of this happened without you by my side... I don’t know what I could’ve done. Your presence made all of this feel so much more bearable." She said with a soft smile on her face. "So thank you for that."

Rein stared at her, the rain droplets slowly dripping down her gorgeous face. Rein had always known that Violet was an absolutely stunning woman, but now that he looked at her face closely, he could truly appreciate how pretty she was.

He could only stare at her in silence for a few seconds, till Violet blinked.

"Is there something on my face?" She asked confusedly.

"No." Rein shook his head with a faint smile. "Well, you’re welcome, I guess. I didn’t do much beyond what I could."

"So humble!" She tapped his shoulder. "But, I hope we can continue to work together and survive together. Ok?" She said as she lifted her fist up in the air, pointing it at him.

"You got it." Rein nodded and tapped her fist with his.

Even though the words seemed fairly simple, it was an oath. An oath to survive together and find a life in this ruined world together. Just like when they were working as partners during the agency days, they will work together in the new world.

Suddenly, a loud thunder echoed in the far distance as a flash of light erupted above their heads. The rain droplets became a heavy downpour that seemed to wash over the entire city.

"It’s getting really bad out here. Shall we go inside?" Violet asked.

"Yeah, you can go ahead. I will be there in a minute," Rein said.

"Ok, suit yourself."

With that, Violet walked away. Rein stood there for a while longer, just basking in the moment before he got completely wet. The water dripped down his midnight black hair as he let the water wash his body and mind.

’This isn’t really that bad after all.’

After that, Rein walked back in, where he found the Redsky family had already set the table for them with quite a variety of foods. Violet made sure to use some of the supplies she had, but since the villa had an entire storage area where they kept food and other items necessary for daily life, they weren’t really worried about a shortage of water and food.

Rein, naturally, felt famished since he hadn’t eaten in hours. His body was also healing, which required a lot of energy. Luckily, his evolved body could handle hunger way better and wouldn’t affect his performance that much.

Still, he sat down and devoured the food. It was very delicious, and he found himself completely full after that.

"We will talk more in the morning about what we need to do. It’s getting late, and Rein needs some rest." Violet said.

"Yeah, of course, you can go ahead, Rein," Clain said with a concerned look.

"Thank you."

With that, Rein left the family and Alex behind as he walked back to the room to rest. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t really exhausted. As he threw himself on the bed, sleepiness immediately started taking over.

’Ugh, I want to check what I got from killing that mutated grizzly bear. But, I can’t even move my hand... I... will do it in the morning...’ He thought to himself as his eyes slowly closed and all the sleepiness in the world finally took over him.

Rein fell asleep quietly that night. A well-deserved rest that he needed the entire day.

However, as if fate itself was mocking him, the same nightmare that he experienced earlier that day came back to him... Almost more vivid than it already was.

That same black liquid was slowly swallowing his paralyzed body as he watched in horror. He couldn’t resist, or even fight the fear... It consumed his body and his very soul. It ate away at his mind and destroyed his resilience as if it mocked his very mind.

"AAAAH!!!"

Rein’s eyes shot open as he yelled and summoned his sword. He stared around, breathless and shocked, sweat dripping down his face. At the same time, loud thunder echoed outside as the rain hit his window.

He stared around as he tried to calm his breathing before he made his sword disappear and exhaled.

"What the hell is this dream... Is it going to chase me every time I fall asleep now?" He asked himself as he wiped his face. ’What does it even mean? What is that black liquid, and why does it consume me?’

He cursed as he looked around him. Whether that nightmare meant something or not, Rein couldn’t tell, and it frustrated him even more.

"I need some water..." He sighed as he left the bed and walked out of the room. The house was completely dark and silent. Everyone was seemingly asleep.

However, for some reason, the moment Rein walked out... He felt something was off.

Something was very, very off.
