"Oh! I’m sorry..." Violet pulled away quickly when she realized what she had done. "Are you ok? You shouldn’t really move this fast. You’re still heavily injured." She said with a concerned look on her face.

"I’m fine. It’s not that big of a deal."

"Not that big of a deal?! You almost got mauled to death by that bear." Violet said. "I don’t know what you were thinking by not trying to run away."

"It was pointless to run away. That bear knew I couldn’t escape. The only way was to fight it and win."

"..."

"Either way, I won, and that’s what matters," Rein said as he looked over Violet’s shoulder at the rest of the family members.

"Good evening, Miss and Misses Redsky." He said with a respectful nod. "It has been a while."

"It has been a while indeed, Rein. How have you been?"

"Doing as usual, Mr Clain." He replied.

"I’m glad to hear that. Well, I would’ve wished we had met again in far better situations. I’m honestly still shocked by what happened. Violet had just told me everything, and it all... feels so unreal." Clain said with a confused expression.

"All of us are. You’re not alone." Rein said. "My knowledge as to what is happening or why it’s happening is as much as yours."

"Perhaps this is God’s punishment upon this world." Elizabeth, Violet’s mother, said with a sad look on her face. "So many people died... And yet they don’t even get the chance to rest in peace, and now they have become monsters that kill other innocent beings. How cruel."

’If this is God’s punishment, it is well fitting.’ Rein rolled his eyes. ’This world has been rotting for far too long. It needed a massive reset, and this might exactly be that.’

Rein, naturally, didn’t believe it was a punishment or why would they be given a tool to fight for themselves and even get stronger seemingly without a limit? That doesn’t sound like a punishment, but more like a challenge. Something that would define those who deserve to survive from those who cannot really face the threats lurking in this world.

This challenge only keeps those who are capable and smart and filters the rest into mere cursed monsters that wander these lands.

’It almost sounds poetic.’ Rein thought to himself.

"..." Victoria looked down as she held her face. "Our lives... Our people... We lost them all..."

"Victoria..." Her husband, Clain, looked at her with a sad expression before he put his hand around her shoulder. Emily walked toward her and sat next to her before nestling into her mother.

Violet understood why her mother felt that way. After all, this wasn’t their only family; they had other family members living in different cities, and they couldn’t know if they survived or not. It was clear that they would lose many loved ones because of this.

"Mom, as long as we have each other, we will be fine. No, I will make sure we are fine. I won’t let anything harm you." She said.

"Violet..."

Rein watched as the family shared that moment; his eyes were calm, and nobody could tell what he was thinking about. However, deep down, Rein didn’t really understand what it felt like to have a family. Ever since he could remember, Rein was alone. He was an orphan, and he never knew who his parents were. He lived in a poor orphanage before leaving when he became a teenager and paving the path for himself in the world of underground business and shady work.

Still, he could tell that this family was very strong and capable. They weren’t going to fall easily, especially Violet; she had a shocking amount of determination to not fall and protect her loved ones.

’This is nothing but the start, Violet.’ Rein thought to himself. ’What the future holds for you might be far worse than you can imagine. Are you truly ready for it?’

That question was something only Violet could answer. Rein could help her and assist her as much as he could, but in the end, she will have to take those steps.

’As for me... Hmmm, I definitely need to get stronger... Way stronger. That bear is only level 14, and it almost killed me.’ He thought to himself as he stared at his body. Rein could still remember vividly how he felt like death was imminent, with its jaws barely inches away from his face.

He didn’t want to experience that again. He simply wanted to crush his enemies so thoroughly that they wouldn’t even have a chance to defend themselves or reciprocate. He wanted to storm through them like they were nothing. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Rein?"

"Hm?" Suddenly, Violet’s voice snapped him out of his daze as he looked up.

"Are you ok?"

"Yeah, I’m fine. Well, what do you want to do now, Violet?"

"Hmmm... Our house seems to be safe for now. It’s definitely a lot safer than the base. I think we should stay here until tomorrow morning at least. Going out now would be very dangerous, especially with your injuries, Rein."

"Yeah, I agree. It’s better to stay here for now."

"What about that guy Teo?" Alex asked. "He ran away when the monster first came and he’s nowhere to be seen."

"... We were so occupied with Rein so we couldn’t really go look for him... I really hope he’s fine."

’So much for wanting to be courageous.’ Rein rolled his eyes.

Silence took over the room for a few tense seconds. The mood was so bad that conversations felt heavy and rather avoidable.

"I’m sure everyone is hungry. I will go make something for you." Victoria exhaled before she stood up and walked out. Emily stood up and followed her mother, leaving the other three in the living room.

Rein tapped his fingers gently on his thigh as he looked through the window. He was thinking about many things. He felt rather uneasy for some reason, even though they had escaped danger, he just couldn’t erase the feeling of worry from his mind. His gut feeling had always been accurate, so this wasn’t going to be any exception.

"Hey, Violet. Can you show me where the balcony is?" He asked.

"Hm? Why?"

"I just want some fresh air." He said.

Violet looked at him silently for a second before she nodded her head and stood up. "Follow me."

The two left the living room and walked through the house to the other side. There villa itself was immensely large so the trip there took a few minutes before Violet opened the gates to a beautiful and spacious balcony that overlooked the entire city.

Immediately, cold air wrapped around Rein’s body as he sucked a deep breath and walked to the edge. Staring into the distance, all he could see was a lightless city, with ruined buildings and fire ignited in the distance.

This view was once quite gorgeous and something he enjoyed often when he’s alone.

"Are you ok, Rein? You look worried." Violet asked as she stood next to him. "Is there something bothering you?"

"... No. I’m just thinking." He said.

"Thinking about what?"

"The future." He replied. "I’ve always thought about the future."
