His Mute Wife: He Can't Sleep After She Left-Chapter 90: Annie, Save Mom
After watching Joshua Sutton walk through the school gates, Kiana Sutton finally took out her phone to reply, "Where are you?"
That morning, Kiana Sutton had received a text message from Desmond Grant.
The message contained a video.
In the video, Hannah Lowell was collapsed on the ground, her hair a mess, her face swollen like a steamed bun, with clear finger marks visible.
Her dress had been torn, and she looked utterly wretched.
Tears streamed down her face as she looked at the camera, sobbing and screaming in despair, "Kiana, save Mommy! I really know I was wrong! They’re going to chop off my hand! I still have to take care of you and your brother! I can’t lose my hand!"
Then, the camera shifted to Desmond Grant. He was wearing a gray bathrobe, the front wide open, revealing an expensive nephrite jade around his neck.
He held a cigar in his hand, crossed his legs, and had two women in his arms.
In the same video: one was enjoying himself; the other was begging for mercy.
"Kiana Sutton, your mom owes me money. Today’s the deadline and she didn’t pay a single cent. Tell me, what should I do with her?"
Hannah Lowell’s sobs kept going. "Kiana, my daughter, please save Mommy! I don’t want to die, wuwu..."
"I know your brother is taking the high school exam today. I’m not heartless. I’ll give you an hour. After you see him into the school, come find me. Otherwise, get ready to see your crippled mother."
Kiana Sutton was furious and worried when she saw the video, but she forced herself to hide it so Joshua wouldn’t notice anything wrong.
Hannah Lowell never learned her lesson. Kiana Sutton really didn’t want to deal with her anymore.
But she was, after all, the mother of both Kiana and Joshua. Even though Kiana always said she didn’t care, she still couldn’t ignore it when she saw their mom in danger.
Besides, Desmond Grant knew Joshua had his exam today. If Kiana didn’t go, who knew what that lunatic might do to Joshua?
This was the one moment where nothing could happen to Joshua.
Thinking this, Kiana Sutton hailed a cab and headed straight for the address Desmond Grant had given her.
"Kia—"
Miles Goodman had recently started helping out with his father’s business. Last night he’d worked until two in the morning and didn’t wake up until after eight. He skipped breakfast and rushed over to find Kiana Sutton.
Sure enough, he saw Kiana at the school gate. Just as he called out to her, he watched her anxiously get into a taxi.
What’s going on?
Did something happen?
Miles Goodman immediately got into his own car to chase after Kiana. As his car started, he spotted a familiar figure at the school gate.
Stella Lyncg—what was she doing here?
Stella handed a file folder to a student and patted the boy’s shoulder, as if giving him some advice.
Miles guessed the boy was probably Stella’s relative taking the exam, so he didn’t think much of it. Instead, he drove off after the taxi carrying Kiana.
The first exam on the second day was science. It wasn’t time yet and the classroom wasn’t open, so Joshua stood quietly in the corridor, mentally reciting the periodic table.
"Joshua Sutton..."
At that moment, a boy walked up to him.
"Yeah?"
"Someone asked me to give this to you."
The boy handed Joshua a file folder.
Joshua hesitated. "Who?"
"I don’t know. She was a very pretty lady."
Joshua immediately thought of Kiana Sutton.
Wait, that can’t be right. If Sis had something for him, she would’ve given it to him this morning.
Besides, Sis knew all about the rules for the exam—no items allowed in except calculation paper.
If it wasn’t his sister, then who was it?
Ten minutes before the exam started, the classrooms were opened and students began to file in.
"Joshua, I’m leaving now!"
"Okay... Hey, did she say anything when she gave you this to give to me?"
"She said you’ll regret it if you don’t look! I’m really going now!"
Joshua’s brow furrowed tightly, and a strong sense of unease swept over him.
The proctor spotted him and walked over, "Hey, classmate, get into the classroom. You can’t bring that with you."
Joshua nodded, "I know."
He set the file folder on a table outside, then went in to find his assigned seat.
Sitting down, he couldn’t stop thinking about the folder outside, the anxiety in his chest growing thicker by the second.
"Everyone, today’s exam is science, so..."
The teacher hadn’t finished speaking when Joshua abruptly shot up and dashed for the door.
"Hey—what are you doing, student..."
Joshua frantically tore open the file folder and saw the photos inside.
The photos were just like the video Kiana had seen—Hannah Lowell’s battered, miserable face.
There was a line written underneath.
"Your mom was taken away by loan sharks. Your sister went to save her—what are you, as her son, going to do?"
Joshua’s fists clenched so tight they trembled all over.
"Student, the exam’s about to begin! Get inside!"
Joshua’s head rang, the teacher’s voice seemed to come from some far-off place—nothing sounded real.
His gut feeling had been right; his sister was clearly out of sorts this morning. She must have seen these photos, too.
She just put on a brave face to let him focus on his exam.
Joshua looked at his shocked classmates and the teacher chasing after him, feeling utterly miserable inside.
On one side was his destiny—the exam his sister had poured everything into helping him prepare for.
On the other, the safety of his mother and sister. What was he supposed to do?
Joshua’s fists trembled, torn and tormented, his eyes turning red.
Before the teacher could catch up, he gritted his teeth, steeled himself, grabbed the file folder, and ran downstairs.
To him, nothing mattered more than family.
Meanwhile, Kiana Sutton followed Desmond Grant’s instructions and entered the foot massage parlor through the back door.
Two thuggish bodyguards dragged her to the door of a private room.
Before she even entered, Kiana could hear Hannah Lowell’s desperate pleas, "No... Please don’t cut off my hand! My daughter’ll be here any second! Boss Grant, please—just wait a little longer..."
Kiana’s face changed dramatically as she shoved the door open and rushed in.
She saw immediately: two men were pinning both of Hannah Lowell’s hands to the table.
Desmond Grant sat on the sofa by the table, one foot propped up, playing with a sharp military knife in his hand.
Kiana’s sudden entrance made everyone turn to look at her at once. Hannah Lowell, seeing her, reacted like someone seeing a savior—she broke down in tears and laughter, "Kiana, my good girl, you finally came!"
Kiana was sweating all over. She tried to go to Hannah, but someone blocked her way.
Hannah Lowell cried out to Desmond Grant in excitement, "Boss Grant, look! My daughter’s here—she has money! She’ll pay you back!"
