Chapter 144- When Fear Has a Name

Beatrice POV

I started shaking the moment Declan asked that question.

Just hearing Tyler's name from his mouth made my heart jump into my throat. I could feel sweat gathering at the back of my neck. My palms were wet. I swallowed hard, trying to hold myself together.

"Yes," I finally said, forcing the words out. "Tyler... Tyler is missing. But it's not what you think. He only ran away because of a small misunderstanding—nothing serious."

I saw it.

That flash in his eyes.

Declan was already getting angry. I knew that look too well. It was the same look he always had before something terrible happened. He just... went silent. Too silent. And that silence was worse than screaming.

And the problem now? Declan doesn't joke with Tyler. Ever.

He worships that boy.

Even when I was kidnapped, the only reason he looked for me like his life depended on it was because Tyler threatened him. Tyler had told him straight up—"If anything happens to her, I'll hate you forever."

That was what moved Declan into action.

He only says yes to Tyler. Always. Everything he ever did for me—every single thing—I knew deep down it wasn't because he loved me. It was because of Tyler. That huge amount of money he gave me? That was Tyler's influence too. I just knew it. He gave it because he knew his son would need some comfort.

And now I had ruined it.

Now my stupid feelings... my stupid decisions had put me in this situation.

Declan didn't say a word. He pulled out his phone and dialed Logan's number.

The phone rang.

And rang.

And rang.

But no one picked.

It went straight to voicemail.

He tried again. Still nothing.

That was when he slowly turned to face me.

And when his eyes met mine, I froze.

I couldn't move. I couldn't even breathe properly. I already knew what was coming. I'd been with Declan long enough to know how this would go.

I was terrified of Declan, yes. But I was more terrified of Declan when it came to Tyler.

If anything happened to that boy... if Tyler even got a scratch on his skin because of me... Declan would break me in half.

"What made him run away?" he asked quietly.

I swallowed again. My mouth felt dry like cotton. I tried to open my mouth, but nothing came out. My lips moved, but no sound followed.

"E-Emmm... emmm..." I stammered.

I couldn't say it.

I couldn't tell him that Tyler ran away because I squandered the money. That the money he gave me for our comfort, for a better life—I had wasted it trying to impress a man. A man who ended up lying and scamming us both.

I couldn't say it because if I did, Declan wouldn't just yell.

He would destroy me.

The fear of what he'd do if he found out the truth made my whole body shiver. I was no stranger to Declan's punishments—but when it had to do with Tyler? He became something else. A demon in human skin.

"Are you suddenly dumb?" he thundered, his voice crashing through the room like thunder.

I jumped.

I nearly peed myself from fear.

My hands flew to my chest as I gasped.

I already knew where this was heading.

If anything happened to Tyler, if something bad happened to that boy, then I already knew what my fate would be.

Death would be a gift compared to what Declan could do.

"I just told you we had a little misunderstanding!" I screamed back, shaking as I moved a few steps away from him.

I was panicking. My voice was loud, but my legs were weak.

"A little misunderstanding?" Declan asked, his voice deadly calm now.

"What kind of misunderstanding? Doesn't it have a name? Or has it suddenly become nameless?"

His eyes were locked on me like he could see into my soul.

I swallowed again.

I should have lied better. Should have prepared a story. Something believable.

But my mind was blank.

All I could feel was fear.

If he started torturing me now—if he heard the truth—I might not survive it. And if I did, I'd wish I hadn't.

"Are you going to help me find Tyler or not?" I asked desperately, my voice shaking. "That's all that matters right now. The misunderstanding doesn't concern you.

He's my son. And we're allowed to fight. So just tell me—are you helping me or not?"

He didn't answer me.

Instead, he shook his head slowly. Then I saw it.

His eyes turned red.

Not from tears.

From pure, raw anger.

He started walking towards me.

Step by step.

Like a predator.

I panicked and began stepping back, but no matter how I moved, he kept coming. My knees were weak. My mind was racing. My heart was pounding in my chest like a drum.

Then my back hit the wall.

There was nowhere else to run.

Nowhere to hide.

Nowhere to escape.

"Who gave you the audacity to say it doesn't concern me?" Declan barked.

His voice boomed so loud, I jumped.

"Or have you forgotten that Tyler is also my son?" he continued, his chest rising and falling like a wild animal.

I could see the fire in his eyes. The same fire that always burned when something had to do with Tyler.

"That without my motherfucking sperm, he wouldn't even be alive? Or are you that stupid not to notice that I have been the one trying—trying so damn hard—to be a father to him?"

His fists were clenched. His jaw was tight.

I rolled my eyes—but only in my head. I didn't dare let it show. Not in front of Declan. That man would pluck my eyes out like grapes if he saw me do it.

I steadied my breath and asked with a low, shaking voice, "Are you going to hurt me? Or will you let me be so we can look for Tyler together?"

My eyes were half-closed from fear. I was trying to stay calm, but my heart was doing backflips in my chest.

He chuckled darkly. That terrifying smirk of his started creeping across his lips.

"You know I can hurt you easily, right?"

His voice was cold. Sharp. No mercy in it.

"I don't care about you, Beatrice. I give zero fucks about you. The only person I care about right now is Tyler. So if I were you, I'd make sure not to piss me off..."

He leaned forward, his voice dropping into a whisper.

"...so I don't slice your neck and toss your useless body into a river."
