Chapter 254: 254

Looking at the bloodied body of the girl who was flayed alive, Yang Ze’s heart trembled. Her eyes were devoid of any life, and the only voice that was coming out of her mouth was painful growls. He couldn’t even imagine the agony that she must have been feeling, living like that. There seemed to be a red paste plastered as a thin layer around her body that was probably keeping her alive.

Her words were like a stone thrown in a calm pond. In the very next instant, the few children who were still alive similarly began to howl like animals, some wishing for death and some just mindlessly howling, having lost their minds a long time ago.

Yang Ze’s fists clenched in response as he gazed at their pitiful conditions, but he didn’t move. Even though the children in front of him were in an absolute wretched condition, he couldn’t lift his hand to put an end to their misery.

On the contrary, he turned around and silently left the room, before putting on the latch, blocking their painful cries, burying them deep underground and the constant sound of heavy rain.

After that, he walked out of the house, locked it as it was and silently headed towards the next house.

Just like the previous house, it was locked too, but there weren’t any wails coming from the inside. Instead, what greeted his sight was jars that were filled with numerous human organs. Eyes, livers, kidneys, hearts... almost every internal organ of the human body was placed in the jars filled with different types of transparent solutions.

Yang Ze took one look and walked out of the house. Compared to before, when he left the first house, his face was frighteningly calm, and his eyes were devoid of any emotions. He quietly walked towards the next house. And sure enough, just like the first three houses, he found something there as well. The entire room was filled with bones arranged in different formations, along with a dense number of books and other mechanisms placed alongside them.

Yang Ze just took a glance before walking out of the house and then headed directly to the house where he was holding the woman captive.

After stepping into the room, Yang Ze patted his chest, replacing his wet clothes with a set of dry ones in an instant as he slowly walked in front of the woman whose eyes were now filled with terror.

Her gaze constantly moved between the two identical girls in front of her. She watched in horror as one of the girls dissipated into blue light.

"What is this place?" Removing the cloth from her mouth, Yang Ze asked in a calm voice.

"What are you all doing?"

*Gulp

Swallowing a mouthful of saliva, the woman hurriedly gave an answer.

"This is the Essence Harvest Hall that comes directly under the Resource Treasure Division of the Royal family."

"Essene Harvest Hall? Resource Treasure Division? What the hell are you talking about?" Yang Ze merely frowned at the unfamiliar terms as he looked at her in confusion.

By now, the woman had understood that the little girl in front of her didn’t know anything about the Imperial city and how things around here worked. She wasn’t surprised by her lack of knowledge; on the contrary, the sense of foreboding in her heart only grew. A little girl this strong was definitely from a sect, possibly on a mission. But why!?

Before the woman could even think further, she saw the girl’s cold eyes as a shiver ran down her spine.

Swallowing a mouthful of saliva, she immediately threw away those distracting thoughts and began to explain in great detail everything about the imperial city.

"Every Imperial City in the Azure Dragon continent follows the same pattern. Under the orders of the ruling sect, every Imperial city has adopted this method."

Speaking till here, she paused for a moment, letting the girl understand the meaning behind those words. On one hand, she was giving her information about the imperial city, while on the other hand, she was telling her that the sects were responsible for the foundations and formations of the imperial city, so that the girl wouldn’t do something excessive.

"Go on... I am listening."

The woman hurriedly nodded in response before speaking further.

"The Yan royal family has six divisions under them."

"The first is the Administrative Court that handles governance and internal order."

"The Administrative Court further has two subdivisions, namely the Records Bureau that manages family registries, laws and archives and Personnel Hall that assigns roles, promotions, and training for all Yan members."

"Then the second division is the Defence Pavilion that oversees security and military with the two subdivisions, namely the Guard Division responsible for City patrols, walls and internal enforcement and the Strategy Chamber that plans defences against external threats or sect missions."

"The third division is named Resource Treasury." Speaking till here, the woman’s eyes lowered, and her voice trembled as she spoke slowly.

"Under it comes the Finance Bureau responsible for Trade, taxes and resource allocation, and the Harvest Hall that oversees farming, mining and gathering new resources by any means possible."

Listening till here, Yang Ze’s eyes narrowed into slits as he finally understood what the woman meant by those terms.

The room plunged into silence as Yang Ze tapped his fingers a few times. It wasn’t until a few minutes passed that he nodded slowly before speaking a single word.

"Continue."

His words made the woman’s body shiver in response, who hurriedly took a deep breath and explained further.

"Then there is the fourth division known as Cultivation Sanctum that focuses on cultivation and sect-related affairs."

"Under it comes the Elixir pavilion, responsible for pill-making, herb gardens and basic cultivation resources. The other subdivision is named the Ritual Court. This is the subdivision responsible for the sect tributes and cultivation management."

"Interesting." Yang Ze couldn’t help but mutter under his breath. Before coming here, he thought that the so-called Royal family and imperial city would follow the same pattern from his previous life... There would be the royal family, nobles under them or perhaps major families holding positions of power and so on.

But to his surprise, it didn’t seem to be the case. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

This time, the woman didn’t wait for the girl in front of her to speak; she chose to continue on her own.

"The fifth division is named Justice Tribunal... and it deals with disputes and punishments."

"The sixth and final division is named External Affairs Lodge, and it handles relations beyond the city, like diplomacy with sect and other regions."

"Both the fifth and sixth divisions don’t have any subdivisions."

"This is the basic structure of the Inner city."

"Every single person that lives here belongs to one of these six divisions."

With this sentence, the woman finally went silent, letting the girl in front of her digest everything that she just said.

And just as she had expected, Yang Ze was truly taken aback after hearing how the imperial city functions.

From the day he arrived in this world, he had either lived in the small cities or the sects, both places with their different mode of operations. Before, he had always wondered why there was a need for the so-called imperial city and even the so-called kingdoms when it was the sects that truly ruled over the land.

Even though he didn’t have a clear answer for that question now, he at least had an idea, especially after listening to everything that the woman just said.

Just to make sure he wasn’t guessing wrong, he decided to ask the woman directly.

"Why is there a need for the kingdoms or the so-called royal family when the sects rule over this land?"

"And if there are kingdoms, why are there cities ruled by the major families instead of these subdivisions?"

The more he thought about it, the more confused he got. He hadn’t seen or heard anyone talk about cities paying tribute to the royal family. He knew that the major families that rule over the cities directly pay tributes to the sect.

If that were the case, then why the need to establish the royal family and this sophisticated imperial system? What even was the use of it all?

He remembered clearly how the two kingdoms, Yan and Qin, often went to war with each other.

Now that he was clear about the situation of the imperial city, he was even more confused.

From the looks of it, the royal family had no influence or actual power outside the imperial city... not even in small towns or cities.

If that were the case, why the hell was this place called the Yan kingdom and why the hell were these two imperial families going to war against each other? It just didn’t make any sense. There should have been no reason for dispute over the border or any other reason.

"I..." The woman was stumped by this sudden question as her eyes darted around, hoping to come up with an answer, but couldn’t.

"I don’t know." In the end, she could only shake her head with a wry smile. She truly had no idea about it and honestly... she couldn’t care less.

Her job and obsession were the creation of the Elixir of Life. Other than that, she had little to no interest in knowing about the outside world. If not for the compulsory education that she received during her childhood, she wouldn’t have even known about the divisions and subdivisions in the imperial cities.

"...." Yang Ze merely looked at her with an expressionless face, wondering if she was telling the truth or not.

"....." Exhaling a mouthful of cold air, he decided to ignore the matter of ’why’ for now and chose to focus on his mission first. He would have plenty of time in the future to figure it out. And if he still couldn’t, then he would simply ask Lin Meilin... She would definitely answer these doubts of his.

"Say..." Yang Ze’s low voice sounded in her ear again.

"If I want to join the royal family... how would I do it?"

"What is the process?"

The moment Yang Ze spoke those words, the woman’s eyes narrowed into slits, and her body trembled as she hurriedly shook her head in response. She even opened her mouth and, before Yang Ze could react, shouted at the top of her lungs.

"HEL...."

But before she could finish her sentence, Yang Ze managed to press his hand on her mouth, preventing her from shouting further.

"You really have a death wish, don’t you?" Gritting his teeth in anger, Yang Ze applied some force on his hand, pushing her head further back, directly placing it against the wall as he slowly began to increase force, as if he wanted to squash it like a melon.

Yang Ze was expecting her to cower in fear once more, but instead of fear, what he saw was defiance.

For a moment, even Yang Ze was amazed at her reaction, but soon let out a cold snort.

"Last question..." His eyes turned cold as he seemed to have made a decision.

"If you were to die, what would happen next?"

As soon as he asked the question, the woman’s body trembled slightly. Even though Yang Ze had covered her mouth with his hand, he could feel the corner of her lips curving as if she was smiling.

"Huh!?" Pulling his hand back slightly, Yang Ze saw her face that had a smile upon it as she spoke in a hoarse voice.

"Wouldn’t it be exciting to find it yourself?"

"...."

"...."

"Okay." Yang Ze finally gave her a nod. He had spent enough time with this creep.

Without wasting another second, he grabbed her by the hair and began to pull her towards the centre of the room.

The woman didn’t struggle at first, wanting to see what the little girl planned to do.

But when she saw the large boiling cauldron getting closer and closer, she suddenly had a bad feeling in her heart.

"WHA..." Before she even had time to ask what this little bitch was doing, she felt her body being lifted above the ground like a piece of rag as her surroundings blurred, and before she could even react, she felt the intense heat of the cauldron om her skin and in the next moment, a burning pain unlike anything she had ever experienced spread throughout her body.

"AAAAAAHHHHHHH"

It took her a moment to realise that the little girl had just thrown her into the boiling cauldron in the middle of the room.

She wanted to struggle, she wanted to get out, but with her body still tied up with ropes, the only thing she could do was to flop around like a fish out of the water. And the more she struggled, the more intense the pain got.

The few times she opened her mouth to scream, a bit of piping hot mixture poured inside, burning her mouth, tongue and the inside of her body.

But this maddening pain only made her scream even more. In just a few minutes, her animal-like howls filled the room.

"Noisy." Yang Ze raised his hand as a large metal lid appeared out of thin air, perfectly closing the cauldron.

He then placed his hand that was enveloped in Internal energy upon the lid, preventing the lid from falling as he stood there in silence.

The only sound in the room other than the sound of heavy rain was the sound of someone hitting the cauldron from the inside.

*Thud...

*thud... thud... thud...
