Chapter 108: Betrayal (I)

The team spent the rest of the day recovering in the level one safe zone. Henrik declared it a mandatory rest after the spider chamber incident, citing the need for everyone to recover essence and reassess readiness for level two.

Students gathered in small groups, processing what had happened. The consensus was clear, Derek had endangered everyone with his reckless fire usage. But beneath that surface agreement the students felt something else.

Some students looked at Derek with newfound wariness, while others seemed almost... impressed by his destructive power.

Kai sat apart from the main groups, methodically cleaning spider ichor from his weapons.

His mind worked through the pattern he had noticed which was Derek’s escalating aggression, the calculating look after Henrik disciplined him, and that enormous essence signature still ascending from level three.

Something was wrong. The pieces didn’t fit together properly yet, but they would eventually.

Lin appeared with food and water. "Thought you might be hungry. You’ve been sitting here for an hour."

"Thank you."

She sat beside him, closer than necessary. "Today was intense. I’ve never seen someone lose control like that during a mission."

"Derek has been unstable since the expedition started."

"Yeah, but this felt different. Like he wanted to create chaos." Lin lowered her voice. "Did you notice how he smiled after Henrik hit him? He wasn’t angry or humiliated rather he seemed almost satisfied."

Kai had noticed. "What do you know about Derek’s background?"

"Not much. I know he’s a third-year from a minor merchant family, always desperate to prove himself. He is also terrible at politics and decent at combat." She paused. "Why?"

"I’m just curious."

Lin studied him carefully. "You think something’s going on beyond a student with anger issues."

"Maybe, people just don’t act that erratically without reason you know."

Before Lin could respond, raised voices of the students drew their attention. Across the camp, Derek stood arguing with Roland near their tent.

"—done treating me like I’m the problem!" Derek’s voice carried across the chamber. "I saved us in that spider chamber and everyone’s acting like I’m the villain!"

"You endangered the entire team!" Roland shot back. "There’s a difference between aggressive tactics and suicidal recklessness!"

"Suicidal? We’re all alive, aren’t we?" Derek’s fire essence flared around his hands. "Maybe if you weren’t so cautious about everything, you’d understand that sometimes you need overwhelming force!"

"This isn’t about caution versus aggression, Derek. This is about you being unstable!"

Derek’s flames intensified, heat radiating outward. Several nearby students backed away nervously.

Henrik appeared between them with commanding presence. "Both of you, stand down. Derek, extinguish your essence immediately."

Derek’s flames guttered but didn’t fully die. "Everyone keeps giving me orders. Do this, don’t do that, control yourself. I’m tired of being controlled."

"Then you’re free to leave the expedition," Henrik said flatly. "Pack your equipment and I’ll have a carriage ready within the hour."

For a moment, Derek looked ready to accept. His jaw clenched and his flames flared brighter.

Then something shifted in his expression. The calculating look on his face had returned and he extinguished his flames completely.

"No. I’m staying. I’ll follow orders." Derek’s tone was perfectly compliant, but his eyes held something cold and distant. "My apologies for the disruption."

He walked away before Henrik could respond, heading toward the far side of the chamber.

Henrik watched him go with obvious concern. "Something’s very wrong with that student. Ben, Mira, keep close watch on Derek. If he shows any more signs of instability, we’re sending him back regardless of his protests."

The team leaders nodded, and Henrik moved to address the gathered students. "Listen up. Today’s encounter revealed some serious issues with discipline and tactical execution. We’re remaining on level one for another day, no arguments. I want everyone to stay sharp and coordinated before we attempt level two again."

Disappointment rippled through some students, but most looked relieved.

As Henrik continued outlining tomorrow’s plans, Kai’s essence sense detected some movement in the stairwell leading to level two. The large signature from level three was much closer now."

And it had stopped ascending. Almost like it was waiting.

Kai stood abruptly, interrupting Henrik mid-sentence. "Something’s coming from level two. It has a large essence signature and is approaching fast."

Henrik’s expression sharpened. "Everyone, combat formation! Scouts, confirm!"

Thomas and his partner rushed to the stairwell entrance, extending their essence senses downward. After a moment, Thomas turned back with his face pale talking a pale complexion.

"He’s right. There are multiple signatures, actually. At least six large ones, moving up from level two in a coordinated formation."

"Monsters don’t coordinate like that," Mira said. "Not naturally."

"No, they don’t." Henrik drew his sword, essence flaring around the blade. "Something’s driving them toward us. Everyone take the defensive formation around the camp, prepare for siege combat!"

Students scrambled to positions, weapons drawn and essence ready. The camp transformed from relaxed rest area to fortified position within seconds.

Kai moved to the defensive line, Lin taking position beside him. Seraphina appeared on his other side, her crimson eyes sharp with focus.

"Any idea what’s coming?" she asked quietly.

"Nothing good."

The first creatures emerged from the stairwell, they were shadow wolves and there was six of them moving in perfect pack coordination.

Each was the size of a large horse, their forms composed of living darkness that rippled and shifted. Red eyes gleamed like coals and their growls resonated through the chamber like distant thunder.

"Shadow wolves from level two," Henrik identified. "But they don’t leave their territory without reason. Something’s wrong."

The wolves spread out across the chamber, circling the defensive formation but not attacking.

Then more creatures emerged. Three massive humanoid figures carved from rock and animated by essence cores. Each stood nine feet tall, their footsteps shaking the ground.

"This is wrong," Marcus said. "Wolves and golems don’t cooperate. They’re from different ecological zones and would normally fight each other."

"They’re being controlled," Kai stated. His essence sense detected the pattern now faint threads of foreign essence connecting to each creature, directing their movements.

"By what?" Henrik demanded.

"Me"
