Heavenly Dragon Doctor Son-in-Law-Chapter 35 - 36 Tears of the Death Rose!
Xiao Lingyue’s heart was pounding.
"Vice Commander, we have cleared the area of any civilians," the female soldier beside her reported. "Why don’t you go over and have a look?"
"Talk less, do more," Xiao Lingyue said, giving her adjutant a cold stare. "And in the future, just call me Miss. We’re not in a war zone."
"Yes, ma’am!" The female soldier stood erect and saluted.
"The moonlight over the river is indeed beautiful. Do people really enjoy moonbathing?" the soldier mused aloud.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Lingyue’s gaze immediately swept across the river. In the next second, her delicate body began to tremble. Soon, tears welled up in her beautiful eyes and began to stream down her face.
"Miss? Miss, you..."
The Heavenly Dragon Army’s Vice Commander, the Death Rose, was now a weeping mess. Unable to restrain herself, Xiao Lingyue rushed toward the bridge spanning the river. The female soldier frowned but immediately followed.
Xiao Lingyue fixed her gaze intently on the man smoking a cigarette with one hand, her steps hastening. Finally, at a distance of thirty meters, she saw his profile. Just a glimpse of his side profile was enough for her to recognize him. At that moment, she froze. A moment later, she collapsed weakly to the ground, tears flowing freely.
"Miss, what’s wrong?" The baffled female soldier rushed to support her.
Xiao Lingyue’s elegant hair had fallen loose, and the tears streaming down her face had already soaked her clothes. The female soldier’s eyes widened in utter shock. Xiao Lingyue, the Seven-Star Vice Commander, represented the pinnacle of military authority. The formidable Death Rose had faced countless near-death experiences without ever furrowing her brow. Yet now, she was leaning on her adjutant’s shoulder, striving to contain her inner agony, trying not to cry out loud.
In the distance, they saw a man next to a wheelchair, practicing walking with a pronounced limp, looking utterly desolate, pitiable, helpless, and alone.
Could it be... him? the soldier thought.
As Xiao Lingyue trembled against her shoulder, the female soldier finally realized the man’s identity. In the entire world, only he could bring Xiao Lingyue to tears. This was the real reason she had given up the opportunity to go to another war zone and become a War Venerable. The soldier adjusted her stance, offering her shoulder for Xiao Lingyue to cry on.
Watching Qin Long limp as he practiced walking, Xiao Lingyue felt as if her heart was bleeding.
After a long time, Xiao Lingyue wiped her tears away.
"Qing’er, you don’t understand him," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "He was the commander of the Heavenly Dragon Army three years ago. He was the Dragon of War of our Great Xia, a living god among soldiers.
"He once led a million soldiers of the Heavenly Dragon Army, storming the enemy’s very heart, and was never once defeated. As long as he was with us, the Heavenly Dragon Army dared to defy the gods themselves.
"I started training with him when I was just eight years old. He led me through blood-soaked battlefields where we killed countless enemies. In my father’s last battle, he fought forty-nine martial arts grandmasters. If not for him, I would have died there, and we would never have reclaimed the vast Southern Region. That single battle earned him his command!"
The more Xiao Lingyue spoke, the more agitated and sorrowful she became. He was the legendary Dragon of War, a prodigy. He had devoted his entire being to the country and its people. But now, he was crippled and living in solitude. His glory was gone, his brothers-in-arms were gone, and he was all alone. The stark contrast between his former glory and his current tragic state made Xiao Lingyue’s heart ache with an unbearable pain.
Hearing this, the female soldier couldn’t hold back her own tears. She had always worked in the intelligence department and had never met Qin Long, but she had heard the legends of this Dragon of War. It was only because Qiu Hu had falsely accused Qin Long of desertion that his name and deeds were suppressed. Despite that, many people still remembered him fondly.
Qin Long! The god of the army! Enemy generals trembled at the mere mention of his name. To the soldiers, he was their faith.
"Miss, aren’t you going to reveal yourself to him?" Qing’er asked, wiping her tears.
"Can I really do that?" The once-decisive Xiao Lingyue now seemed as fragile as a young girl, murmuring to herself.
Her Senior Martial Brother, Qiu Hu, had ambushed Qin Long. He wanted to replace Qin Long as the Commander of the Heavenly Dragon Army and had already become the new candidate, the acting commander. Even I have no choice but to obey him. Now that Qin Long has fallen to such a state, Qiu Hu wouldn’t give him a second thought. But if he found out Qin Long wanted revenge, he would definitely strike to kill. He would be ruthless to protect his power and position. Back then, the arrival of the Great Xia King made him miss his chance; besides, the death of a Heavenly Dragon would certainly have triggered an investigation from the higher-ups. But now that Qin Long is crippled, wouldn’t killing him be as easy as flipping one’s hand?
Xiao Lingyue had specifically chosen a few trusted confidants for this visit.
"Miss, you shouldn’t have come to see the commander," Qing’er said, stroking her chin as she guessed Xiao Lingyue’s concerns.
"I had to. He’s my family," Xiao Lingyue said, her face filled with remorse. "In the chaos back then, I had someone take him away. Sending him to the Tang Family was a last resort."
That year, to save Qin Long, countless of her female soldiers had died at Qiu Hu’s hands just to get him out safely. And her Brother Long had no other family. How would he survive? Xiao Lingyue still remembered him telling her that his father had arranged a fiancée for him: the young miss of the Tang Family, Tang Xuewu. With no other choice, she had arranged for him to be sent to the Tang Family. After that, they lost all contact.
"Good, there’s no one around," Xiao Lingyue said, clenching her teeth. "I’ll just see him for a moment, and then we’ll leave." She steeled herself and began walking toward Qin Long.
Just then, Qin Long sensed someone approaching and started to turn his head. A hurried but pleasant voice suddenly called out.
"Ah Long! Ah Long!"
Qin Long paused and looked toward the source of the voice. Xiao Lingyue and Qing’er immediately stopped and hid themselves off to the side.
"Ah Long! Where are you?" the anxious voice called out again.
Xiao Lingyue frowned, her gaze fixed on the direction of the voice.
"Xuewu, I’m over here, practicing walking!" Qin Long called out, waving to Tang Xuewu.
A stunning figure jogged over—it was indeed Tang Xuewu. Seeing Qin Long there, she felt a great weight lift from her heart.
"Ah Long, why did you come out without telling me?" she chided, her beautiful eyes showing a hint of anger. "It’s dangerous to come out by yourself!"
"It’s fine, I’m not a child anymore," Qin Long said with a slight smile. "So, you really do care about me!"
"Who... who cares about you?" Tang Xuewu stammered. "I just thought you couldn’t stand the Tang Family’s taunts and left in a..." She quickly covered her mouth, realizing she had almost said the wrong thing. A slip of the tongue could easily wound his pride. She had always tried to protect what little dignity he had left. Who else would care about the pride of a man they all considered a fool? But Tang Xuewu would never be one of them.
"Oh, so you were afraid I’d get angry and leave the Tang Family?" Qin Long teased, touching his chin with a mischievous smile.
From a distance, Xiao Lingyue understood that Qin Long’s life these past few years had not been easy.
"Don’t worry, I won’t leave," Qin Long said, his gaze turning serious and tender as he looked at Tang Xuewu. "If I wanted to leave, no one could stop me. But not until I’ve repaid your kindness."
At that moment, Tang Xuewu was dressed in pink sportswear.
