Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Battle

Hearing this, the terrified Qing, as if a spark of hope had been rekindled, scrambled and crawled over to the old chieftain. "It was Lu Xiao..."

"Nonsense!" Before she could finish, the old chieftain roared at the mention of Lu Xiao’s name. "Qing, at a time like this, you’re still unrepentant? You’re still trying to drag Lady Lu Xiao down with you?"

"No, it’s not like that, Chieftain! It was one of the Male Beastmen with Lu Xiao. He came to me out of nowhere and said that if I just did what he said, he’d help me... help me get Lu Xiao driven out of the tribe. I only wanted her to leave! I never meant to harm everyone, I really didn’t! Oh, right, he taught me how to make the antidote! I’ll make the antidote for everyone right now. I really didn’t mean to harm everyone, I was just listening to him! I was tricked by him, that’s all! Chieftain, you have to believe me!"

The old chieftain had risen to his feet at some point. At the same time, Lu Xiao, who had been lying on the bed, sat up. "You’re saying one of the Male Beastmen traveling with me came to you?"

If that was the case, then she knew who it was. It was either C Luo or Platinum.

Seeing Lu Xiao sit up so suddenly, Qing seemed to finally realize something. "You... you’re all right?"

Before Lu Xiao could speak, the old chieftain said coldly, "How would we have ever found you if not for the plan Lu Xiao devised? She was right—someone who does something wicked can never be at ease. To ensure nothing goes wrong, they always have to come and see the results for themselves. Qing, you have truly disappointed me."

"So you were all faking it!" Qing said, as if the truth was finally dawning on her. She collapsed to the ground.

Lu Xiao had no time to bother with her, but the information she’d just obtained was very useful.

Fred and Ares had already vanished from the room. Lu Xiao knew exactly what they had gone to do.

She didn’t hesitate either. Exiting the treehouse, she led the others straight toward the wooden house where C Luo and Platinum were staying.

When they arrived, Fred was already pinning C Luo to the ground and demanding, "Where did Platinum go?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about! He left early this morning. He didn’t tell me where he was going, so how would I know?"

C Luo lay prone on the ground, his one remaining arm twisted behind his back by Fred.

Just as Lu Xiao arrived, Ares emerged from the wooden house after searching it. "He’s not here."

Meanwhile, Shield shoved Qing forward. "Is he the one who put you up to this?"

Qing looked at C Luo lying on the ground. "No, it wasn’t him. The man who came to me wasn’t disabled."

"Then it has to be Platinum. That bastard can’t stop making trouble, even here. What the hell is he trying to pull!" Fred’s brow furrowed, and he was clearly regretting not having killed the man at the first opportunity.

He released his grip on C Luo but still gave him a kick. "You two are always together. You’re telling me you don’t know where he went?"

C Luo struggled to his feet, wincing in pain. "He never tells me what he’s going to do. Lady Lu Xiao, please be careful. Whatever he’s doing, you are his ultimate target."

Lu Xiao didn’t respond to C Luo. Instead, she turned to Shield and said, "You all know this place better than we do. Have everyone spread out and search, but tell them to be extremely careful. Mao, take me to the homes of those who are ill."

Then she looked to Fred. "Please, assist Shield and the others."

"Don’t worry, Lady Lu Xiao. I’ll take care of it."

Lu Xiao nodded, then went with Ares and Mao to administer the antidote to the poisoned tribe members.

As for Qing, Shield took her away and locked her up.

With Lu Xiao on the case, the poisoned members of the tribe were quickly cured.

When everyone heard that Qing was the poisoner, those who had previously confronted and questioned Lu Xiao all wore expressions of guilt.

Once Lu Xiao finished her treatments, they all rushed out. "We’re so sorry, Lady Lu Xiao! We never should have doubted you, much less listened to Qing and slandered you."

"I understand why you all felt that way. There’s no need for apologies. Just go back and take good care of your families." Understanding was one thing, but forgiving them was something else entirely.

She had no desire to form deep friendships with the tribe’s people, so she certainly wasn’t about to place her trust in them. Because of that, she didn’t take their hurtful words and accusations to heart.

As far as she was concerned, these people were merely strangers she had met by chance; it was uncertain if their paths would ever cross again.

Why would she take any of it to heart?

Yet, the more nonchalant she was, the more ashamed it made them feel. As they watched Lu Xiao walk away, many of them burst into tears.

Ares walked beside Lu Xiao on the way back.

Ares offered no words of comfort, because he knew perfectly well that she didn’t need them.

"Are you tired?"

At his words, Lu Xiao looked up at Ares. Only he seemed to know what she was thinking. She gave a slight nod and took his arm. "I want to go home."

Ares’s heart clenched. He stroked her hair, his own heart aching for her. "We will."

They both knew deep down that they were in for a long wait, but neither of them could afford to give up hope.

Suddenly, a sound rustled in the bushes. Ares reacted in a flash, scooping Lu Xiao up and leaping aside. He turned just in time to see a massive black python land on the very spot where they had been standing.

"Platinum!" Ares recognized him instantly.

Lu Xiao’s eyes widened. "That’s Platinum?"

Before Ares could answer, the massive python on the ground began to transform, gradually revealing Platinum’s face. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Lu Xiao frowned as she looked at Platinum, who now had the lower body of a snake and the upper body of a man. This was the first time she realized Platinum’s beast form was a snake.

Platinum fixed his gaze on Ares. "You’re quick on your feet!"

"Platinum, what the hell do you want?"

In response to Lu Xiao’s question, Platinum gave her an eerie, gentle smile. "Haven’t I made my intentions perfectly clear? I want you. Tell me, if I kill him, will you finally be mine?"

"You’re insane! Is this why you tricked Qing into poisoning the entire tribe? What does a life even mean to you?"

"Nothing. They mean nothing. Those people who doubted you deserved to die. What’s wrong with me killing them on your behalf?" Platinum clearly couldn’t understand why Lu Xiao was so angry over a bunch of nobodies.

In his eyes, Lu Xiao was meant to be a lofty being, indifferent to all below her. Her only role was to accept the worship of the masses.

Why should she care about the lives of ants?

"Lu Xiao, come with me. Let’s leave this place together. If you do, I promise I’ll spare them. How about it?"

"In your dreams!" Before Lu Xiao could snap out of her stupor, Ares lunged, thoroughly enraged. ’I will never let Lu Xiao be taken from me again! This man must die here today!’

It was the first time Lu Xiao had ever seen Ares truly fight, and her heart leaped into her throat. "Ares, be careful!"

Her only answer was the sound of Ares and Platinum locked in combat. Lu Xiao bit her lip, her eyes fixed on the battle, fraught with anxiety.
