Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Observation

"I’m sorry, I..."

C Luo had just started to speak when Lu Xiao let go of him. She forced a brave smile. "Sorry, I shouldn’t have spoken like that. Just... pretend you didn’t hear it. Let’s go back."

The more she acted this way, the more intense C Luo’s guilt and self-reproach became.

He was beginning to think that a female like Lu Xiao didn’t belong here at all. She deserved to live a happy, vibrant, and energetic life, showered with affection.

On the way back, Lu Xiao walked ahead the entire time. She never once looked back at C Luo, but to his eyes, her slender, frail figure seemed the very picture of vulnerability.

After returning to the Black Tower Base, Lu Xiao went back to the room where she had first woken up. C Luo lingered at her door for a long time after she went inside before finally leaving.

Lu Xiao paid no mind to whatever C Luo was thinking. Back in her room, she took a hot shower. When she came out, a glass of hot milk was sitting on the table.

Lu Xiao walked over and picked it up. She scanned it with her purification power and, after confirming it wasn’t laced with any suspicious drugs, tilted her head back and drank it down.

With the warm milk in her stomach, Lu Xiao lay down on the bed and continued to play the part of a fragile female, properly frightened by the earlier ordeal.

She knew very well that her every move was being closely watched.

Platinum sat in the monitoring room, watching the little female who had returned, drunk her milk, and gone to bed to rest. He listened as C Luo gave his report.

"So, aside from the panic caused by the bomb and her brief disappearance, there was nothing else out of the ordinary?"

C Luo lowered his head slightly and replied in a low voice, "That’s right."

Platinum stared at Lu Xiao on the monitor. "What do you think of her? What kind of person is she?"

C Luo’s heart skipped a beat when he heard the question, but he quickly concealed his emotions. "She’s different from all the other females I’ve met. She’s... not arrogant. And when you’re around her, you don’t feel discriminated against."

Hearing C Luo’s answer, Platinum suddenly smiled. "Yes, she is a special female, isn’t she? Anyone who interacts with her can’t help but like her. But don’t you forget our objective."

C Luo immediately dropped to one knee. "I understand. I dare not forget."

"Mm, you’re dismissed. Have Ban Lun take her to the lab later." Platinum’s expression was impassive. The words he had just spoken, though seemingly directed at C Luo, were also a reminder to himself.

Lu Xiao hadn’t been resting for long when a knock came at the door. When she saw C Luo again, he looked as if he had just washed his face; the stray locks of hair on his forehead were still damp. He kept his eyes slightly lowered. "Lord Ban Lun has invited you to join him."

Sensing his distant attitude, Lu Xiao said nothing. Seemingly having recovered a bit, she smiled and replied, "Alright, just a moment."

Lu Xiao went back into the room to put her coat back on. When she emerged, she seemed to have returned to the state she was in when they first met.

Since she had already been to Ban Lun’s office once, Lu Xiao was familiar with the way and didn’t need C Luo to lead her.

This time, however, the two of them didn’t exchange a single word the entire way. It was as if C Luo was deliberately avoiding something.

And Lu Xiao was exceptionally indulgent of it.

When she saw Ban Lun again, the portly man was wearing a white lab coat. The moment he saw Lu Xiao, he put on an apologetic expression. "Oh, my dear Lady Lu Xiao, you’ve suffered so much! I never imagined something like this would happen. You must have been terrified."

Lu Xiao dodged Ban Lun’s attempt to wrap his arms around her. "Yes, I was terrified. So when can I leave this godforsaken place?"

At her words, Ban Lun put on a look of regret. "I’m also very sorry that this happened, but I promise it will never happen again. For you to be in such a rush to leave right after arriving... it truly breaks one’s heart, Lady Lu Xiao. We genuinely want to be your friend."

"Genuinely?" Lu Xiao sneered. "I haven’t felt any of your sincerity. I still don’t even know why you abducted me and brought me here. If it’s inconvenient to tell me, then just send me back. Don’t waste both our time."

"Yes, yes. We’ve made you wait for so long and even let you get frightened. It’s our fault. Please, give us another chance. I’ll take you to witness a great miracle right now."

"If you could cut the crap, I think we’d get along much better." Lu Xiao’s expression was full of disdain. ’How can one fat guy be so long-winded?’

Ban Lun seemed completely oblivious to Lu Xiao’s contempt. He even bared his teeth in what he probably thought was a handsome smile and said, "I’m not usually like this. It’s just that seeing you... I can hardly contain my joy. When feelings run deep, they’re impossible to control!"

"Lord Ban Lun, do you happen to write books in your spare time?"

"Hm?" Ban Lun was stunned by Lu Xiao’s sudden question, not immediately grasping what she meant.

A faint smile touched Lu Xiao’s lips. "You just seem like you’re good at making things up. Maybe you’d be a good screenwriter."

Ban Lun: "...You flatter me!"

"Not at all. I’m being sincere."

Lu Xiao followed Ban Lun out of the office and noticed C Luo still standing guard at the door. He hadn’t left.

As Lu Xiao walked past him, she smiled at him.

C Luo’s heart clenched, and he lowered his gaze.

Seeing his nervousness, Lu Xiao decided not to say anything. They followed Ban Lun together back to the first floor.

They stood before a heavy, white, smart door. C Luo placed his hand on the adjacent smart-reception port to scan his palm print. The door slid open, revealing a room filled with all sorts of cold-looking instruments. In the center of the vast laboratory, on an operating table, lay a comatose Male Beastman. His head was connected to various data cables and tubes whose purpose was unclear.

This was clearly the test subject.

Ban Lun led Lu Xiao into a glass observation room. From there, they watched a researcher outside inject a yellow liquid into a glass container. The liquid then flowed down through a tube.

The other end of that tube was connected to the test subject’s brain—the location of the Spirit Sea.

Lu Xiao understood at once. This yellow liquid was the "potion" Ban Lun had mentioned.

Suppressing the theories forming in her mind, Lu Xiao feigned confusion. "What’s happening now?"

"Can’t you tell? We’re administering a treatment! We’re creating a miracle!"

"Is that yellow liquid the potion you were talking about?" Lu Xiao asked bluntly, voicing her thoughts.

"Yes, that’s right! That is the potion that can create miracles! We’ve improved upon it, and I believe the effects will be even better than before. Just you wait and see. You’ll be astounded by this potion’s creation!" Ban Lun’s fanaticism was no different from that of a cultist spreading his gospel.

However, only one question remained in Lu Xiao’s mind at that moment: "Where does this potion come from?"

Hearing this question, Ban Lun’s reaction wasn’t as strong as C Luo’s had been. He simply stared at Lu Xiao with a cryptic expression, then broke into a crazed, unhinged cackle. "I don’t think you *really* want to know."
