Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Our Family’s Affairs Are Not Your Concern

"There’s nothing strange about it." She’d been locked up for days and had ample time to sort through everything. "It was just a setup by Theodore Grant and Wanda Lynch."

"But Theodore said he didn’t know anything about it either."

"The year he sent my dad to prison, he also claimed he didn’t know." Just thinking about it made Natalie hate herself.

’How could I have brainwashed myself into believing Theodore back then?’

He had completely betrayed her trust.

Felix Finch had heard a little about what happened back then.

He had even asked Theodore about it once.

His answer was just as Natalie had said. "Maybe he really didn’t know about what happened to your father."

"How could he not know?" In Riverden, no one is more powerful than him. It would be incredibly easy for him to do something so underhanded. "Stop defending him. I knew my father better than anyone. Theodore was the one behind it."

It had only been a little over a year since it happened.

He knew Natalie still hadn’t let it go.

"I understand how you feel."

"You don’t understand." No one could understand what it felt like to have her family torn apart during the two years of her marriage. "Felix, thank you for coming to see me. But really, don’t go to the trouble of trying to save me. You’re no match for Theodore Grant."

"I believe you were framed. And if you were framed, there must be evidence to prove you don’t even know the arsonist." He couldn’t stand seeing Natalie stay in here. "You don’t have to just swallow this injustice. It will ruin your entire life."

"What choice do I have?" She looked at Felix, her eyes welling with tears. "Unless you have a solution?"

Felix had no solution.

But he could help her look for evidence.

"I... I admit I’m not all-powerful like Theodore, but..."

Natalie gave a slight shake of her head. "Just forget it."

There is no greater sorrow than a heart that has died.

Besides, she didn’t want to be indebted to Felix.

But that’s not how Felix saw it. "...Where there’s a will, there’s a way. I’ll do everything I can to find evidence for you. Please don’t give up, okay?"

"Felix, I think this is the best ending for me." She offered a faint, sad smile.

The sight pierced his eyes.

Felix’s heart clenched painfully.

As he walked out the doors of the police station, his expression was grim.

’How did things turn out like this?’

He decided to go to the Grant Group and talk to Theodore Grant again.

Before Felix could even speak, Theodore sneered, "Don’t tell me you’re here to beg me to save Natalie Morgan, are you?"

"You know exactly why I’m here."

Theodore Grant picked up a golf club and walked into the adjacent recreation room.

He clearly had no interest in discussing the matter with Felix.

He swung the club with a lazy, casual air. The ball flew. "Oops, missed."

"Theodore Grant, Natalie is your wife, for God’s sake. She’s lived with you for two years. Don’t you know what kind of person she is?"

Theodore Grant paid no attention to Felix’s words.

He took another swing. "My game seems to be getting worse."

Felix reached out and snatched the club from him. "Stop messing around. I’m being serious."

"Dr. Finch." Theodore took the club back from Felix’s grasp. "I’ll thank you not to trouble yourself with my family’s affairs."

"You think I actually want to get involved? I just feel sorry for Natalie."

Theodore let out a soft, humorless laugh, his jaw tight. He looked at Felix. "So, you slept with her behind my back? Did she hide in your arms and tell you all sorts of bad things about me?"

"You..." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

’He’s being completely unreasonable.’

’Is this even the same Theodore Grant I used to know?’

"That’s absurd." The man before him was becoming a stranger. "This whole affair with Natalie... from start to finish, have you never once suspected Wanda Lynch?"

Theodore’s swing faltered for a moment, then he laughed. "So you think Wanda Lynch set her own house on fire, blinded herself, and broke her own leg?"

Felix was speechless.

’Theoretically, that didn’t make sense.’

’But if that didn’t make sense for Wanda, did it make sense for Natalie to incite someone to commit arson?’

’Plausible or not, it all comes down to Theodore Grant’s whim.’

"It seems your trust in Wanda Lynch far outweighs your trust in Natalie." Felix gave a self-deprecating smirk. "Then again, she’s the one you’ve always idealized. Of course you’d believe her. But a man should still have a sense of right and wrong."

Theodore didn’t answer, instead hitting another ball. "Are you here to lecture me on how to live my life, Dr. Finch?"

"I wouldn’t dare presume to teach Mr. Grant how to live. I’m just offering a well-intentioned reminder: some things, once done, can’t be taken back. You should think carefully about that."

Felix didn’t stay long after that.

After Felix left, he slammed the expensive golf club to the ground, snapping it in two.

Panting heavily, he pulled out his phone and made a call. "Weller Kendall, get back here from Seacrest immediately. I have an important job for you."

He gripped the phone in his hand.

The words Felix had just said echoed in his mind: ’From start to finish, have you never once suspected Wanda Lynch?’

’Should he suspect her?’

「A few days later.」

Weller Kendall handed a file with the initial investigation findings to Theodore Grant.

"Mr. Grant, the arsonist’s nickname is Iron Head. He’s a gambler. He did receive a transfer for one hundred thousand yuan, and he also received a message telling him to set the fire."

"Unfortunately, the WeChat account was deleted right after the incident."

"Mr. Grant, I also checked your wife’s call history and chat logs. There was no contact with this ’Iron Head.’ I’m guessing the account was a fake."

Theodore accepted that theory.

’But who’s to say Natalie didn’t create the fake account herself?’

"Give this to the lawyers."

"Understood. I’ll get it done right away."

「One week later.」

Theodore Grant appeared once again in the visiting room of the police station.

Natalie, who had never been heavy, had lost a significant amount of weight.

Life inside was hard. They only served one meal a day: a steamed bun and a side of boiled vegetables.

She could accept all of that.

The worst part was the light that was kept on all night. She was already a poor sleeper, and in the ten days she’d been here, she’d only managed a few hours of sleep in total.

She felt like she was going to die.

"It looks like you’re not having a good time in here." His tone was cool and tinged with mockery. "If you want out, I can get you out."

"I don’t need you to." Her eyes were dull and lifeless.

"No regrets?"

Natalie didn’t feel she had anything to regret. Her only regret, perhaps, was that the fire hadn’t killed Wanda Lynch.

"If Wanda Lynch had died, I’d have even fewer regrets."

"You..." He raised his hand and seized her by the throat, his expression changing abruptly. "...How can you be so vicious?"

She glared at him.

His grip suddenly tightened.

He didn’t slowly loosen his grip until the color drained from her face. "We’ll settle this score when we get home."

Theodore Grant had someone handle the paperwork.

Natalie was released on bail.

She was silent the entire way home.

"I got you out of there, and not even a ’thank you’?" he asked, his gaze fixed on her, his voice suddenly low and gentle.
