Chapter 44: Chapter 44: I Thought He Gave You a Leg

Fearing the nurse might misunderstand, Natalie Morgan added, "I’ll be back first thing tomorrow morning."

"Are you well enough?" the nurse asked, looking at her with concern. "I really don’t recommend you go home."

"I don’t sleep well in the hospital," she said, telling a casual lie.

The nurse didn’t want to make things difficult. "Alright, then come sign a leave request form. Get the doctor’s signature, and you’ll have to be back tomorrow morning for your IV drip."

"Okay, thank you."

She walked out of the hospital.

Natalie Morgan called Serena Sutton.

Then she hailed a cab and went to her friend’s apartment.

Thomas Morgan had already been brought back. He was dazed, sometimes silent, sometimes just smiling foolishly.

"Thomas, do you still recognize me?" Natalie Morgan looked at her brother, her heart aching.

Serena Sutton patted her on the shoulder, signaling for her not to worry. "I’ve made an appointment with a psychiatrist. We’ll take him for a consultation tomorrow to assess the situation, and then we can figure out the next steps for his treatment."

’It seems this is the only way for now.’

’Still, this is the best possible outcome.’

Theodore Grant hadn’t gone back on his word.

"Serena, I’m still really scared that Theodore Grant will go back on his word. What if one day he decides to send Thomas to some other godforsaken place? We might never see him again."

"Would he really do that?"

Serena Sutton didn’t know Theodore Grant well.

But judging by how he treated Natalie Morgan, it wasn’t beyond him to do something so monstrous.

Right now, Natalie Morgan just wanted to protect Thomas. "Serena, I have an idea."

"Go on."

"I want to sell the house my parents left me."

Serena Sutton was taken aback. "Why sell the house? Where will you two live in the future?"

"I never planned on staying in Riverden."

Her expression grew dim. She no longer felt any attachment to this city.

Leaving was an inevitable and final choice.

A pang of sorrow hit Serena Sutton.

Only someone like Theodore Grant could push a woman to this point.

"I understand. No matter where you go, I’ll support you. As for the house, I can help you sell it."

Natalie Morgan nodded, offering a grateful smile. "Thank you, Serena."

"No need to thank me. I just want you to live well."

"I will."

The woman, covered in wounds, had long since lost the light in her eyes.

She wasn’t born this way.

Although her adoptive parents were busy making money and spent little time with her as she was growing up, she had still been raised with love and care.

She used to be cheerful and generous, sincere and easygoing in her dealings with others.

But...

She didn’t know when she had become so meek and submissive.

’It must have started the day I married Theodore Grant.’

Love can make a person forever vibrant and radiant.

It can also cast a person into hell, never to be redeemed.

She was the latter.

"Enough about me." She picked up her phone and transferred all the money in her account to Serena Sutton. "I know this isn’t nearly enough for Thomas’s treatment. I’ll figure something out... find another job."

"I don’t want your money."

Serena Sutton transferred the money right back.

Natalie Morgan was going back to Theodore Grant’s side. Life would be hard; she couldn’t be left without a single penny.

"Serena..." She wanted Serena Sutton to accept it.

But Serena Sutton was firm. "When you finally divorce that pervert Theodore Grant, you can pay me back then. I won’t hold back at that point."

’Fine.’

Natalie Morgan mentally recorded every single debt she owed Serena Sutton.

When she was able, she would definitely pay it all back, and more.

Natalie Morgan stayed at Serena Sutton’s place for the night.

That night, she helped Thomas Morgan bathe, cut his hair, and shave his beard.

She also changed him into a set of clean clothes.

He didn’t sleep well and often woke up startled. Natalie Morgan stayed with him the whole night, barely sleeping a wink.

In the morning, Natalie Morgan returned to the hospital.

She stayed in the hospital alone for about a week.

Theodore Grant never showed up, and neither did that Secretary Bell.

During that week, the TV in her room broadcast a lot of news about the Grant Group.

It was from the news that she learned Rhys Lawson had really sold that plot of land to the Grant Group’s rival company.

Dissatisfaction with Theodore Grant within the Grant Group reached a boiling point.

She didn’t know if Theodore Grant would blame her for this.

’But what does that have to do with me?’

’He was the one who made me sleep with that man, and he was the one who took me away.’

"You’re looking much better today," the nurse said with a smile as she walked in.

"Yes, I’m getting ready to be discharged."

"You can," the nurse said, handing Natalie Morgan her medication. She added casually, "Someone was transferred here today. I saw the man accompanying her, and he looked like the one who came to visit you the other day."

’A man?’

The only one who had come to see her was Theodore Grant.

"The person who was transferred... are they having surgery? Or..."

"They said she suffered a knife wound some time ago that nearly hit her heart, and she’s here for a full check-up." The nurse pursed her lips. "This woman has already had full check-ups at several hospitals. Her stack of reports is this thick. I don’t know why she needs another one. I guess when you’re rich, your life is just more precious."

’Afraid of dying?’

’Wanda Lynch didn’t seem to hesitate when she stabbed herself to frame me back then.’

Theodore Grant had plenty of money. If he was willing to spend his time and money on Wanda Lynch’s whims, it was none of anyone else’s business.

"I suppose so."

The nurse hummed in agreement. "Well, come find me in a bit. I’ll get your paperwork ready for discharge."

"Alright."

Natalie Morgan had recovered well.

She quickly gathered her belongings, slung her bag over her shoulder, and walked out of the hospital room.

While she was handling her discharge procedures, Theodore Grant emerged from a VIP room, pushing Wanda Lynch in a wheelchair.

Seeing Natalie Morgan, Wanda Lynch was visibly startled. She turned her face to Theodore Grant and said, "Theodore, can you go get the reports for me first?"

Theodore Grant lifted his gaze and glanced at Natalie Morgan.

Then he turned and walked away.

Wanda Lynch wheeled herself over to Natalie Morgan.

"So, you were hospitalized too? Natalie Morgan, you should drop your little schemes. What’s the point of copying me? It’s not like Theodore will feel sorry for you." Her slender fingers gently caressed her wheelchair. "He’s different with me than he is with you. See? This wheelchair was imported. It costs over a hundred thousand, you know. A gift from Theodore."

Wanda Lynch loved to get a rise out of Natalie Morgan.

Especially when Theodore Grant wasn’t around, she would become even more vicious, shamelessly revealing her insidious and despicable nature.

Natalie Morgan had no desire to engage with her.

But she wasn’t about to indulge her, either, especially not when Wanda was enjoying herself so much. "Oh, so he gave you such an expensive wheelchair? I thought he’d given you a new pair of legs, seeing how happy you are."

"You..." Wanda Lynch’s expression changed in an instant.

Natalie Morgan took the forms from the nurse and took a step toward Wanda Lynch. "Enjoy wearing my old shoes. Just don’t ever give them back—I’d hate to catch athlete’s foot."

"Natalie Morgan, you..." Wanda Lynch gritted her teeth in hatred.

Natalie Morgan gave a slight arch of her eyebrow, then turned and walked away.

It wasn’t that she lacked the words to retort to Wanda Lynch.

Most of the time, she simply wasn’t free to express her feelings as she pleased.

Wanda Lynch had Theodore Grant backing her.

And she was just a pitiful, constrained wretch.

As she turned, she saw Theodore Grant standing behind her, his face dark and grim.

"What did you just say?"
