Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Little Heartless One

She smiled and walked into the living room.

A woman from the second floor came walking down.

Natalie Morgan looked up, and their eyes met.

Both were stunned.

The woman quickened her pace, excitedly rushing over and hugging her tightly. "Natalie, is that you? Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m seeing you in my own home! Why haven’t you contacted me all these years? I’ve missed you to death!"

The woman’s name was Mandy Chase.

Natalie Morgan’s college classmate. They had been roommates for four years.

They were also in the same club and were very close.

After graduating from college, Natalie Morgan married Theodore Grant and cut off contact with everyone.

She hadn’t known that Mandy Chase had married the middle-aged man standing before her.

"Mandy, you’re... Mrs. Wallace?"

"Forget Mrs. Wallace this or Mrs. Lawson that. I’m your adorable bottom-bunk Mandy."

She looked radiant, as lively and playful as she’d been in school. For a married woman to be in such a state, it was clear she was cherished in her daily life.

’Compared to others’ happiness, I really am...’

Natalie Morgan gave a slight smile.

Miles Wallace chimed in at the right moment. "Mandy, so Mrs. Grant is your old classmate? What a coincidence."

"Isn’t it? Natalie and I were best friends in college. We even made a pact to travel the world after graduation, but what a pity..." Mandy Chase gently patted Natalie Morgan’s arm. "...This little heartless thing vanished right after we graduated."

"You old classmates must have a lot to catch up on. Mr. Grant and I won’t disturb you. Please, chat."

Miles Wallace invited Theodore Grant into the main living room.

"Okay!" Mandy Chase led Natalie Morgan to a side parlor. "Natalie, after you graduated, I asked so many people about you but couldn’t find any news. At one point, I thought you’d been scammed and taken to Northern Burma. I even asked someone to look for you abroad. Turns out you just got married."

’Marriage is the stain of my life.’

She forced a smile. "When did you get married?"

"Me? Just last year. Someone introduced me to Wade. To be honest, I wasn’t into him at all. Besides having some cash, he was old and ugly. But my mom wouldn’t have it; she was only interested in his money, so I just resigned myself to it. But hey, luckily, Wade is actually a pretty good guy."

Mandy Chase’s face glowed with happiness.

’She chose the right person. That’s truly fortunate.’

"As long as he’s a good person and treats you well, that’s already a rare blessing."

Mandy Chase glanced toward the main living room, lowered her voice, and asked Natalie Morgan, "I see your Mr. Grant on TV all the time. He’s even more handsome in person. Living with someone that good-looking must be exciting, right?"

’Exciting?’

’It certainly is.’

’Just not the kind of exciting Mandy is thinking of.’

"We’re just... so-so."

Seeing Natalie Morgan’s melancholic expression, Mandy Chase couldn’t help but add, "Honestly, I’ve seen plenty of gossip about your Mr. Grant. That girl... Wanda Lynch, was it? She’s so shameless. She has no official status, yet she’s always seen with him as if they’re a couple. It’s so frustrating to watch."

She couldn’t say much in front of Mandy Chase.

’Theodore Grant must have known about my relationship with Mandy when he asked me to come.’

He had already warned her not to say the wrong thing.

"You can’t believe everything you see online."

"Yeah, those reporters are the best at making things up out of thin air." Mandy Chase pulled Natalie Morgan toward a corner of the living room. "Natalie, do you still play? I recently bought a new guzheng. The tone is really amazing. Come and try it." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

This area was specially designed for musical performances. The guzheng placed there was made entirely of white jade and looked incredibly expensive.

"Wade bought this for me when he was on a business trip. He said he doesn’t know much about these things, but he figured since it was pretty expensive, it must be good." The smile in Mandy Chase’s eyes reached their corners as she looked up at the man in the living room. "Wade, just admit it. Did you get ripped off?"

"Whatever my wife says, goes," Miles Wallace said with a doting smile.

Mandy Chase gave a cute, playful huff.

"Wade, you’ve never heard Natalie play, have you? She’s amazing, so much better than me. How about we have her play a piece?"

"Mandy, Mrs. Grant has injured her hand. Let’s not have her play. There will be other opportunities in the future."

Injured?

Only then did Mandy Chase look at Natalie Morgan’s hand in surprise. "How did you get hurt?"

"I accidentally scratched it. It’s nothing serious," she explained lightly.

"Well, you should be more careful from now on."

"Mhm."

"I really miss watching you play. I remember, whenever we had a performance, that one upperclassman would always be there waiting for you. You really were quite the charmer."

It was just a casual joke from Mandy Chase.

Natalie Morgan’s heart clenched, and she didn’t dare look at Theodore Grant’s thunderous face.

Just as she was about to signal Mandy Chase to change the subject, Mandy spoke again, "I remember that upperclassman was from our university’s medical school. What was his surname again? Oh, I remember now! His surname was Finch."

Miles Wallace smiled at his wife. "Mrs. Grant is a natural beauty. It’s only normal that she’d have suitors."

"Our Natalie was the campus belle of Riverden University back in the day! The line of guys chasing her stretched from the south gate of the school to the north gate, and she was especially popular with the upper and lowerclassmen from the medical school." Lost in her memories, Mandy Chase was completely oblivious to Natalie Morgan tugging at the corner of her clothes several times. "Mr. Grant, you really picked our school’s most beautiful woman to be your wife."

"How very fortunate for me." Theodore Grant’s expression darkened.

Natalie Morgan scratched Mandy Chase’s palm, trying to change the subject. "Mandy, let’s add each other on WeChat."

"Sure! You’re not using your old WeChat account anymore?"

"Yeah."

Because of this connection between Natalie Morgan and Mandy Chase...

...Miles Wallace finally relented on the collaborative project.

Dinner proceeded in relative harmony.

When it was time to see them off, Mandy Chase hugged Natalie Morgan, reluctant to let go. "Let’s keep in touch, okay? No more disappearing acts."

"Okay, I will."

Waving goodbye, she saw Theodore Grant and Natalie Morgan off.

Mandy Chase looked up at Miles Wallace and asked, "That project... you’re planning to work with Mr. Grant on it?"

"Does my wife have an opinion on the matter?"

"I’ve read a lot of gossip about Mr. Grant..."

Miles Wallace’s gaze was profound as he nodded. "That’s precisely why I was hesitant to agree. But seeing how loving they are as a couple, and since Mrs. Grant is your good friend, I..."

"He’s lucky to have married Natalie."

"I’m the lucky one for marrying you." Miles Wallace wrapped an arm around Mandy Chase’s waist and gave her a smiling kiss on the cheek.

Mandy Chase laughed and pushed him away. "You’re so cheesy."

...

In the car.

Theodore Grant remained silent.

The cigarette between his fingers burned slowly until it scorched his skin, only then did he toss it out of the car window.

"Felix Finch pursued you in college?"

His eyes were filled with an almost imperceptible jealousy and possessiveness, like a fire that twisted his features.

This version of Theodore Grant was dangerous to Natalie Morgan.

She shifted uneasily away from him.
