Chapter 33: Aderyn

The large bird’s talons stretched forward, closing in on Adam as he plummeted toward the ground. The air around him roared, his torn wing leaving a trail of blood rising to the air as he proceeded to fall downwards. His body was shutting down, pain surging through every nerve, but his mind refused to give in

He was pissed.

Gritting his teeth, Adam forced his barely functioning left hand forward, the same one that was now missing three fingers.

He had no time to hesitate... No time to think... He needed to act now. There was only one defensive spell he truly mastered, and by all accounts, it was a damn good one.

Using the Spirit Language, he began coding his spell into existence. Magic circles began to take form as a result, commanding the very Astrum Attribute to bend to his will.

Soon the spell takes root, and their purpose is realized after the proper command is woven into existence.

Magic circles flared into reality, appearing in front of and behind him as a result.

The complex ruins in the circles pulsed with power as he manipulated the air itself with the spell. The space around him thickened, the air behind him morphing into something more akin to sticky rubber, catching his descent and slowing him down.

Meanwhile, the air in front of him solidified, layer upon layer of compressed force forming an invisible wall harder than reinforced iron, solidifying the air in front of him to form an air wall.

The faceless bird, moving too fast to react, slammed into the unseen barricade.

A sickening crack echoed through the air as the monstrous bird’s body contorted from the impact. Blood splattered against the unseen wall, staining the hardened invisible air wall, giving it the illusion of blood staining the space in front of him.

The moment that happened, the creature let out a shrill, almost pitiful screech as its massive form jerked from the collision, momentarily disoriented.

From there, Adam barely spared it a glance.

His breathing was ragged, his body aching from blood loss and internal injuries, but he had no intention of letting this thing recover. He didn’t know how it was hurting him but had a vague idea based on the patterns of its behavior and the nature of the attack. He had never seen or heard of a being like this before. There was still too much he didn’t know about the Monster World.

But he was quick on the uptake.

He was no fool.

From what he gathered, it wasn’t attacking him with claws or beak because it didn’t have any, to begin with, and it didn’t reach close enough to attack like that. It was damaging him with sound. A vibration so intense it literally tore into his body when he heard it. That meant this thing’s primary weapon was its own voice.

As such Adam was about to rip that weapon away.

Using his mastery of Air Construct Magic, he wove another spell into existence. The moment the large bird started to recover, a new barrier formed...this time not to protect Adam, but to trap the creature. A dome of pressurized air sealed around the beast, cutting it off from the outside world.

He wasn’t done there, however.

Priscilla had once taught him that any defensive spell, with the right coding of the spirit language, could be turned into a brutal offensive weapon.

He took that lesson to heart at this moment.

The air barrier began to shrink.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

The pressure inside skyrocketed, the once-invisible walls crushing inward from all directions. The large screeched in fury, pain, and panic, its body thrashing against the pressurized prison. Its bones cracked, its flesh compressed, and its wings twitched as they were forced against its own body. The monstrous bird let out one last, strangled cry before, but the sound did not reach Adam, it stayed within the barrier...and then...

POP!!!

The air bubble collapsed into a marble-sized sphere of blood, floating delicately in the sky where the beast had once been.

Adam was still very much in pain to lift his hand, but he did. With a single motion, he flicked his remaining fingers skyward, sending the compressed sphere high above. When it reached a safe distance, he dismissed the spell.

And the moment he did that an explosion of blood, and flattened chunks of bird meat scattered through the sky, spreading like an unfolded gore blanket into the air.

Like that, the fight was over as quickly as it started.

Adam exhaled sharply, his vision swimming as exhaustion and pain caught up to him as the adrenaline seized too. His liver still burned, his missing fingers throbbed, and he felt like his entire body had been wrung dry. He landed, standing on solidified air, his mind racing.

"What the fuck was that thing?"

And the moment he asked that System replied.

『SEARCHING ARCHIVES』

A few agonizing seconds passed before the System continued.

『ENTRY FOUND. SPECIES IDENTIFIED: ADERYN. CLASSIFICATION: SUPERNATURAL ENTITY - SUPERFICIAL』

Adam’s brow furrowed.

"Well, I guess it was a superficial."

He knew the term. He had heard Minerva and Priscilla mention it before many times, but he never got the full picture of how dangerous they were, apart from the fact they were fucking deadly. But seeing this thing was a species, he stopped to wonder, just how many of these things were out there?

He was about to ask another question when the System preemptively answered.

『Well master, from the information the database offered, there are four distinct types of Superficial one can run into』

The System said to Adam, as she tried to keep him informed, as a result of this, Adam had to ask, as he said.

"Of course, they are... care to explain?" freёnovelkiss.com

Of course, she responded to her master’s plea, this was Adam’s first time running into one of these beings, and if it wasn’t for his quick thinking, he would have died here.

『Of course master the first types are called...
