The black chain snapped free, and with it, the rest of the chains split in half, as if one broken link were enough to shatter the entire seal. The whole lake shuddered as the Baby Kraken was set free, its oval body thrashing from side to side.

The snapped links did not merely break. They shrieked through the whole lake as black haze spilled from them and streamed into the water. The pressure around Martin lurched so violently that it felt as though the dungeon itself had recoiled from what he had done.

Its tentacles, however, had not been freed, so it was not as dangerous as it could have been.

Martin narrowed his eyes.

Countless system windows appeared in front of him.

This is huge... so fucking huge!

Martin did not have time to sort through all the changes, but he knew he had just uncovered another major mechanic in the Hidden Level One Dungeon. He could even believe this mechanic was the reason the dungeon had been hidden in the first place, though it clearly went deeper than that.

The mystery was solved. What mattered now was surviving the consequences of what he had just unleashed.

Still, he was not alone.

"Angel, I need your help! Keep throwing me at him! I can defend myself! I just need your speed!" he shouted as he pulled out his shield and sword.

I can’t use any of my skills in this water except Solitary Edge. I need Angel to keep me mobile, so this is a test for both of us... and her revenge too!

The Lake Boss thrashed in its half-freed state while Angel darted in right away and slammed into Martin again, sending him even closer to the Baby Kraken’s rounded head. She did not hesitate for even a heartbeat. He drove his sword through the weight of the water and straight into one of its countless eyes, bursting it open and drawing out a cloud of blood.

"Again!" Martin shouted, already bracing himself for Angel’s next hit.

Angel rammed into his side and jerked him sideways, then looped through the bloody water and slammed into his back again. She moved with fierce little bursts, as if the fight had become hers too. Using that force and momentum, Martin drove his sword into another of the Kraken’s exposed eyes. It burst open.

"Again!" he shouted as Angel swung back into position.

By now, Angel needed no more instruction. Each time the Baby Kraken twisted its head or narrowed its eyes, she cut through the water in a new line and put Martin exactly where he needed to be.

She no longer waited for his full command. The instant his body shifted, she was already there, slicing through the bloody water and driving him into the next opening with fierce, eager precision. Even when the Baby Kraken narrowed its eyes into slits, the power of Solitary Edge and Angel’s support let Martin tear through its eyelids.

"Great work, Angel! Keep going!" Martin shouted, forcing himself through the drag of the water

Another eye burst.

Then another slash tore through a closing lid.

Blood spread thicker through the water, and the Baby Kraken’s HP crashed below zero before it could do anything but flail in its ruined state.

The Baby Kraken convulsed one last time, its ruined eyes twitching unevenly before all strength left its body.

Then the huge oval mass broke apart into countless red particles, leaving only blood, drifting scraps of darkness, and the sudden emptiness where a boss had been.

Martin clenched his hands.

Martin looked at Angel as she circled around him in quick, happy loops, and his own excitement surged even higher.

Without her, he would have never controlled that fight underwater.

She had kept him moving, forced open every angle, and turned the half-freed Baby Kraken into a target that could do nothing but bleed and die.

"You were awesome, Angel! This Baby Trident is the weapon you earned all by yourself!" Martin said, wrapping his hand around the trident’s shaft and raising it up.

It was a one-handed weapon, which already made it perfect for his style, at least from the feel of it.

The blood-thick water still kept him from seeing his new drop clearly.

Angel squealed, brushed against him once in clear excitement, and then carried him back to the shore, where he could finally see both the trident and her.

Once they reached land, Martin finally saw the Baby Trident clearly. It was compact and wickedly elegant, its three dark prongs gleaming with a wet orange sheen, as if the weapon had been shaped from the lake boss’s own rage.

Martin had barely lowered it before Angel zipped around the trident in tiny, excited loops. She let out a string of bright squeals, gave the shaft a quick little nudge with her head, and then landed against his forearm as if claiming both him and the prize at once.

Martin laughed.

"Yeah, yeah. I know. You like it."

Angel lifted her tiny head even higher and circled the Baby Trident once more with clear pride, her little body brimming with excitement.

He did not need a system window to tell him who had earned that drop first in spirit. One look at Angel was enough.
