Chapter 117: Chapter 117 Crates of Gold, Hearts on Fire

Time to let them get some real experience.

Magnus glanced toward Abigail and her sister sitting in the corner. "Abigail, you and Emma each take two squads. Your job’s a bit different - head around the edges of Southriver City and look for any processing plants or factories. See if there’s anything we might need. A lot of those places have their own generators. If you find one, haul it back too."

Hearing that she had her own task, Abigail stood up, a bit hesitant. "Can we... really handle it?"

"Of course you can," Charlotte walked over and grabbed her arm with a grin. "Right now, you two and Magnus are the only second-tier Awakened in the group. If you two aren’t up for it, then none of us are." Boosting morale was Charlotte’s specialty.

After assigning most of the teams, Magnus finally turned to Isabel. "Isabel, take twenty people and the tanker trucks and gas drums that aren’t full. You’re in charge of hitting the nearby gas stations."

"What about those gas stations we passed a few days ago?" Isabel asked.

They had seen plenty of stations, but the convoy had kept moving to save time. Magnus thought for a moment and replied, "Stick to the ones nearby. As for those we skipped earlier, I’ll have Lucy and Molly take twenty people to check them out."

Magnus remembered meeting Lucy and Molly at the Havencrest Medical Academy supermarket - both had left a strong impression. When the students first joined his group, he gave them assistant squad leader titles for their voice in decisions. Now, they’d earned full command roles.

With 1047 people in total, Magnus had just dispatched 980. After counting the remaining leaders, there were fewer than fifty still back at the convoy. Emily looked a bit uneasy. "Magnus, with everyone heading out, what happens if something goes wrong here?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

"This is my base. I’m staying. That’s enough," Magnus said with confidence.

Ever since getting the Nature Crystal, he’d felt unstoppable. Unless another bomber showed up, even twenty infantry vehicles wouldn’t shake him.

With no more questions, the teams were ready and moving by 10 a.m., rolling out in waves for their second raid on Southriver City.

By 10:55 a.m., every squad was gone. Only Magnus and about forty women stayed behind to guard base.

Compared to yesterday’s chaos, today the monsters seemed almost weak in the eyes of the women. Most had scattered after the screams and madness triggered by yesterday’s blood rain, with fewer left in the city today. The only real problem now was the massive black swarm of sky-mosquitoes still circling above - those were the main threat.

Sophia and her 300-woman squad hit a massive supermarket first. Her order was clear: "If you can carry it, it’s yours first. What’s left goes to the group."

The moment the women heard the news, they exploded with cheers. Free stuff? Take whatever they wanted? In the apocalypse, that kind of thrill was rare - nothing like the past world. It hit different.

By 3 p.m., the squads led by Emily and Sophia had swept through supermarkets, general stores, clothing boutiques, malls, and even liquor shops. There wasn’t a single spare spot left in the entire convoy - even the sleeper buses were jammed full of loot.

Just as the trucks were bursting at the seams, Liana’s team rolled in, bringing six big box trucks and two regular trailers. They loaded them up and hauled the goods back to the main camp.

By 7:30 that night, all the teams returned, overflowing with spoils. But even after such a haul, they’d barely scraped a quarter of Southriver City. Spirits were sky-high. The women lit fires, cooked dinner, feasted. Tomorrow, they’d continue.

That rhythm held for three solid days. The Ice Regiment practically stripped Southriver City of anything worth taking - vehicles, supplies, you name it. Liana couldn’t even keep track anymore; the final tally would have to wait until they got to Grain Depot Town.

By the fourth night, cleanup was wrapping up. The plan: move out to Grain Depot Town in the morning. The gloom from the Crimson Rain attack had lifted. Everyone was glowing with energy, even usually cool-headed types like Sophia and Emily were swept up in the buzz. Liana didn’t even need to speak - her mood said it all.

After the last dinner in Southriver City, Magnus gathered with Emily and the others in the RV lounge. The squad leaders were there too, about ten of them, still chatting fast and loud, riding high on adrenaline.

"Magnus! This setup works!" Liana said, her cheeks flushed with excitement, stabbing at the map like she’d struck gold. "Look! On the way to Ashbrook Town, we pass another county-level city - just like Southriver - and three small towns. We’ve already made the plan. Don’t let anything slip by! We raid every single one! What do you think?"

Before Magnus could reply, Sophia cut in, "We do this every time! Even when we reach Ashbrook, stay there to rest up. I’ll lead the team and clear the cities one by one!"

"Hell yes!" one of the squad leaders chimed in. "It’s a rush, grabbing stuff without paying a single copper! Half my squad’s hooked on it."

"Same here!" another agreed.

The women all joined in, noisy as ever. Even Emily and Charlotte, usually more reserved, grinned and nodded along.

Magnus had been riding the high too, but after all their shouting, he couldn’t help rubbing his temples. "This might work now," he said, voice steady, "but not for long. Sooner or later, these cities and towns will be locked down by bigger survivor groups. Unless we’re willing to kill without a second thought, we won’t get chances like this again."

"What’s so wrong with that?" Sophia fired back, not backing down. "Cliff dropped bombs on us, killed so many of our sisters - wasn’t that murder too? They can do whatever they want but we’re supposed to play nice? Says who?"

"Yeah! Why them and not us?" others backed her up, loud and heated.

Magnus looked at them, calm as ever. "They’re not all part of Baxter’s army..."

His words landed heavy. For a second, the noise died. The fire in their eyes cooled just enough to let his meaning sink in.
