Ruan Chanchan felt the small hair at the back of her neck rise in the air. She turned and looked in the direction from which the scream came. Turning her head to one side, she glanced at the mer next to her. "Did you see anyone coming here?" The last thing she needed was some other mer dying after getting provoked by Shao Xia; she was lucky enough to save Yuan Ni—but she couldn’t save someone else, could she?

If she could, then she would be a superwoman.

Yuan Ni shook his head at once. He didn’t see anyone coming here. Earlier, when he went to the shore, he was quite alone, and no one followed him. As for what happened later on, after he was pushed into the river, he had no idea about it. He was too focused on saving his own life, so how could he even check his surroundings? How would he know that someone else was lurking in the shadows?

The only fortunate thing was that the scream was way too loud, and many people from the tribe came running as well.

"What happened?" Chief Xie was panting hard, as she had to run all the way from the tribe to the shore in a matter of a few seconds. Thus, even though she was a totem warrior, she was a little out of breath. She looked around the clearing, and when she didn’t find anyone, her brows could not help but crease. She turned to look at the people behind her and asked, "You all heard that scream as well, didn’t you?" For a second, she couldn’t help but wonder if she was imagining it because there was nothing.

Priestess Yuan also frowned. She had heard the sound of someone screaming just now and knew that there was someone being attacked. Because the scream did come from here, and it was filled with the cry of anguish when someone was close to being killed.

They could never mistake that cry for help, but—where was the person who was attacked?

"Maybe we should take a look at the tribe members?" suggested one of the elders. "If we take a look at the members, we will be able to count who is missing, and then we might be able to narrow down the victim as well as the culprit."

"That’s right," agreed another elder with a nod. He said to Chief Xie, "We all came running right after hearing the scream. Whoever the culprit behind this incident might be, he or she didn’t have enough time to run away. We can always catch them."

The elder looked sharply around the entire surrounding area as if he could see the culprit.

"Ruan Chanchan and Yuan Ni are not here."

"Shao Xia, are you really trying to kill my sister?" Ruan Zeqiu snapped at the woman who was still harping after his sister. He glared at her and said to her, "Are you really going to keep harping at my sister? She is not someone who will kill someone over something so petty." Ruan Zeqiu trusted his sister and knew her well enough to know that she would never do something like hurting someone behind their back like a coward; what was more, his sister had already taken her revenge by making Priestess Yuan beat the shit out of Yuan Ni. Why would his sister then go after Yuan Ni and try to kill her? She was not stupid.

What happened earlier in the morning was still fresh in everyone’s mind; why would his sister do something as foolish as trying to hurt Yuan Ni when she knew that the suspicion and blame would land on her head right away?

Shao Xia shot him a rather ugly smile and said, "Your sister and Yuan Ni are the only ones who are not here. Anyone can put one and one together." She spoke in a haughty tone as if she already knew what was happening and had seen it happen with her own eyes.

Ruan Zeqiu was so angry that he was about to raise his hand and hit the woman, but he was stopped by Xie Daiyu. The mer calmly looked at Shao Xia and said to her, "Did you see her attacking Yuan Ni? If you didn’t, then I will ask my mother to punish you. This is the second time you have accused a tribe member of doing something when they have clearly not done anything. You keep mentioning that Ruan Chanchan is the one who did something to Yuan Ni...then who is behind you?"

Shao Xia was startled when she heard Xia Daiyu’s response. She turned to look behind her and was stunned when she saw Yuan Ni standing behind her.

"You—" she had clearly pushed this mer in the river and even disrupted his spiritual flow to make sure that the mer would drown in the heavy current. How come he is alright? What happened? When she finished the mer into the river, Shao Xia was certain that the mer was dead for sure. How the hell did he even survive that push?

"Me," Yuan Ni glared at the woman with sheer hatred in his eyes. It was one thing that the woman had abandoned and lied to him that she saved him, but to think that she even tried to kill him by making use of the lies that she had told him when they were together. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

She could have easily told him that she never saved him, but she didn’t and even used the feelings that he had for her. This was nothing less than exploitation, damn it. How dare she use him like that, even when she didn’t even save his life? This was truly unforgivable. She was the kind of person who liked to hear all kinds of nice things, but once he stopped doing what she liked and what she wanted him to do, she started to hate him right away.

He should have long seen through her act, and yet he still let her fool him by coaxing him with a few words.
