Chapter 1090: First Disaster (1).

Stepping out of his tent, Cain noticed that the terrible stench of the Devil Miasma had suddenly become more bearable.

He frowned and glanced down at himself.

His body felt sticky and mildly uncomfortable. Plus, he was also giving off a rancid odor that strangely enough, matched the smell of the Devil Miasma for some reason.

He grimaced, ’I need to take a shower.’

The sound of footsteps swam into his ears. He turned around,

"Well, would you look at that? Cain! What a surprise to see you here."

Cain snorted as he began thinking of how and where he could take a nice cold plunge.

"Doesn’t seem like much of a coincidence. What do you want, Steve?"

Steve clicked his tongue. Dressed in a while sorcerer’s cloak, a pair of large glasses and a strange looking gas mask, he looked like the perfect representation of a mad doctor cum crazy sorcerer.

"I needed some samples from those Mutants from earlier. Even if they are abhorrent spawns damned by the Essence of Devils, I couldn’t, for the life of me, guess what sort of beast they evolved from. I mean what even are they? Or what were they? Truly fascinating, isn’t it?"

Not in the mood to listen to Steve’s spiels of jargon, Cain waved dismissively,

"If you are so eager, why not go back yourself and get some?"

Steve’s eyes widened, "Now that, is a wonderful idea."

Then they turned dark again,

"Unfortunately, I do not think leaving you all alone out here would be a good idea. You need me, so I might as well just make some sacrifices..."

Cain raised a brow and chuckled,

"I don’t have time for this." He said as he turned away.

With a contemplative look on his face, Steve snapped his fingers together.

Directly above Cain, a magic circle blossomed into existence.

A torrent of ice-cold water gushed down, completely enveloping him.

"By the way, you stink. No need to thank me."

Once the torrent was over, Cain glared at Steve with bloodshot eyes.

However, when he noticed that the foul stench wafting off of him was gone, his rage ebbed away just a bit.

He sighed, "What do you really want from me?"

Steve sighed and walked over to Cain and placed an hand on his shoulder,

"What, I can’t just run into an old friend?"

Cain slapped his hand away and glared at him.

Steve snorted and turned away,

"Fine. I need your help with something."

He snapped his fingers together. The space in front of them trembled as something was spat out of a pocket dimension.

Cain’s brows creased together,

"I thought you said you didn’t snag any of them?!"

Steve shrugged, "I lied. Beyond that, take a closer look at this." He said as he stooped over the corpse of the {One-eyed Rotworm}.

Cain sighed and leaned over as well.

Silence...

Cain pursed his lips,

"So? What exactly am I looked for here?"

Steve shifted the pair of goggles up the bridge of his nose,

"These creatures are quite interesting. Here, take a look at this..."

Steve summoned a think metal rod and began poking at the Devil Mutant.

Cain’s already furrowed brows morphed into something that showed his clear discomfort,

’This dude...’

The {One-eyed Rotworm} was rather ugly looking. The singular eye on its head was enormous and yellow, with a reptilian slit pupil.

It’s long red tongue was rolled out of itself frighteningly wide maw filled with rows of incredibly sharp teeth and rotted gums.

Its skin was the color of rot and coals, with sickly purple and red veins, and its blood leaking from multiple wounds and burns on its body, was a twisted green that sizzled against the ground as it dropped onto it.

Steve’s expression was rather serious,

"The Devil Settlement we had to defeat was limited to the confines of a single city. Their resources were limited, and the Devil Essence had to battle with the abstract divinity of the gods to gain ground.

He turned to Cain,

"In the wild, far away from the cities, these limitations do not exist. The Devil Miasma is also free to roll and spread as it pleases. Not only that, but the beasts out there are much more likely to hunt down Devils and otherwise."

"There’s bound to be even worse that these things outside the city." Cain finished his train of thought, a grin look in his eyes.

Of course, the knew that.

However, staring at the corpse of a foul-looking creature, trying to envision something more twisted and horrifying that it was rather difficult.

Still...

"There’s still no confirmation of what is out there. All we do know, is that there are a lot of Devils, and a whole lot of Mutant Beasts. Perhaps a few of these things in between."

Steve nodded then his brows crinkled together,

"That might be true. But these things look like they are evolving to fit into a more terrible world. And looking at the scope of the damage in the city, I can say we might be looking at a totally different case of terraformation than we initially expected. I suspect this might be just the tip of the iceberg."

He sighed, "Often times, the combination of two great evils may result in the birth of something that defies our pre-established notions of fucked up."

Steve paused for a while,

"Either way, I’m saying all this just to be careful. These ones aren’t particularly powerful. But they are unique. And when it comes to dangerous fiends, unique is not a very pleasant word..."

Steve rose back to his upright position.

Cain hesitated for a moment. Then he frowned as he stared closely at the corpse for a few seconds longer,

"This... Did this thing come with a mana shard?"

Steve raised a brow. His lips parted slightly. Then he froze.

"Wait a moment..."

His eyes took on a strange arcane glow that could be seen even with the goggles on as he glared down at the corpse.

Suddenly, he exclaimed,

"What the hell is this?!"
