God Ash: Remnants of the fallen.-Chapter 1078: A Battle of Principles (5).
Cain slapped the chubby rat right across the face,
"Enough rubbish talk."
Cain closed his eyes then murmured under his breath,
"Ignis, how are things holding up?"
A few hundred meters below, decked out in battle gear, Ignis had a rather terrible expression on her face,
"You drag me all the way out here for this?! Damn this stupid contract!"
Cain laughed wryly. Then his expression turned serious,
"We’ve been able to get most of them out alive."
Ignis frowned but nodded,
"Yeah."
She glanced up, her eyes narrowed,
"Those two really must be a handful."
Then she snorted,
"Serves you right for being a womanizer. You won’t spare even a bug!"
Cain’s expression soured,
"What?! This isn’t that kind of—"
"Yeah. Sure..." Ignis responded dryly.
Cain grimaced, "I’m telling you. I—"
He froze for a moment then let out a sigh,
"You know what? Nevermind."
Ignis chuckled, "In any case, all we can do is wait for the to stop."
"But from the looks of it, they might not be stopping any time soon."
Cain sighed. Even all this time, he had continued to watch the battle.
Very quickly, it had becomes apparent to him how right and wrong he had been.
Anathe was quite powerful.
He could even easily say she was much more powerful than Evangeline was.
He also believed she was quite intelligent. Her mastery of several complex magics and spells proved that even more.
However, she was quite naive.
Indeed.
The Ant Queen was naive and simpleminded.
After coming to understand the underlying reality of the Redscale Colony, Cain felt like this made a whole lot more sense than he had originally thought.
Evangeline on the other hand, was an insidious monster.
Cain trembled as he considered how much of a nightmare it would be to face her.
She always struck from the shadows and barely, if ever, revealed herself.
Over the course of the battle, Anathe had become more and more frustrated, until she had devolved to throwing destruction in random directions.
Very soon, the entire Colony, which was large enough to house millions of evolving beasts, would be turned into rubble.
However, the fact that the Ant Queen was simple, didn’t mean she was stupid.
She had in fact, already noticed a glaring flaw in Evangeline’s ability to dive through the shadows.
And that flaw, was that she had to be in contact with a shadow.
At first, that didn’t seem like much of a flaw. After all, shadows were everywhere.
However, the less structures there were to cast shadows, the lower Evangeline’s maneuverability was.
To make matters even worse, night was swiftly approaching.
At night, shadows coild only be created if there was a light source.
And it was common know what had become of the moon.
Very soon, there would be no light to cast shadows.
And that meant her opponent would have no other choice but to reveal herself and fight her head on.
When that time came...
Anathe coldly threw out another spell, levelling an entire colomn of black chitin, turning it into rubble in an instant.
Perhaps she had sensed this too, because Evangeline seemed to be done with running around as well.
Anathe’s eyes suddenly widened when she felt a rush o killing intent directed at her.
’Where is she?’
The runes on the surface of her body flared up as her muscles tensed up.
A split second later, her shadow tore open.
Wielding her daggers menacingly in a reverse grip, Evangeline swung them both at the Ant Queen’s neck.
With uncanny foresight, Anathe brought up her weapon to block it.
The chilling sound of metal clashing against metal rang out.
Without wasting a drop of momentum, Evangeline followed up with an arching sweep of her legs, heel aimed at Anathe’s temple.
The Ant Queen brought up her forearm to block.
However, in the next moment, Evangeline sank back into the shadows, reappearing to the other side.
Anathe was unable to respond fast enough and the lock crashed into her midsection, tossing her back.
The Ant Queen’s eyes widened as she let out a groan of pain.
Twirling her daggers, Evangeline had a smile of victory on her face,
"You might have a lot of arm strength, but your defenses seem a bit lacking, no?"
Anathe grit her teeth as she struggled to her feet.
It was true. Her exoskeleton, while it did have excellent defensive capabilities, it was quite lackluster when compared to her strength.
The same was true for most other {Redscale Ants}.
Smashing her feet against the air, Anathe rocketed forward like a missile, smashing her weapon at Evangeline who simply evaded it by diving into the shadows.
She appeared half a breath later just inside the Ant Queen’s guard, smashing the butt of her dagger against her chin.
Anathe saw stars momentarily as she was knocked off balance.
Evangeline’s eyes narrowed sinisterly as she righted her grip and plunged her daggers downward.
Unexpectedly, Anathe brought her arm up just in time, her fingers firmly locking around Evangeline’s arm.
Evangeline’s expression changed immediately.
’Not good.’
With a sickening crunch, the Ant Queen shattered the arm of the indignant human.
Eyes blazing with furious, her Ki ballooned to the high heavens even as her mana swelled.
With as much force as she could muster, the Ant Queen swung. Evangeline’s body cut a burning trail through the air due to the speed of her descent.
She was unable to summon the abilities of the {Shadow World} in time as her body smashed into the rubble.
Her eyes widened as her back slammed into the ground with a sickening crack.
Breathing heavily, a look of fulfillment flashes in Anathe’s eyes.
That blow had certainly done a fair bit of damage. Perhaps more than enough to turn the battle completely in her favor.
However, just before she could capitalize on it, she felt a bad premonition.
Before she could get out of the way however, a blinding pain shot through her body.
The Ant Queen’s cry of pain travelled on the wind like a peal of thunder in a storm, cutting through, even all the chaos.
From the growing pool of blood surrounding her on the ground, Evangeline flashed a bloody grin.
Her plan had been successful. The naive Queen had been so focused on her, that she had lost sight of something important.
The ball of energy she had been gathering all this time.
And now, that ball of energy was right behind the Queen.
It has now transformed into an enormous bloody apparition on the sky, evoking fear in the hearts of all who saw it like the visage of an evil god.
Spikes shot out of it and into the body of the Ant Queen.
Chains of shadows came from its dark depths and wrapped around her as well.
And finally, at the very top of it, a face crafted of shadows weeping rivers of vibrant crimson blood appeared.
Evangeline raised a trembling fist, blood red runes on her arm and in her eyes resonating with the apparition in the sky,
"Blood Maiden of Shadows." Her declaration of the spell was like a curse as the wings of the maiden, completely covered in the sharp blood spikes slammed shut around the frame of the Ant Queen.
