Global Collapse-Chapter 659 - 626: This Won’t Get 404’d, Right? _1
Under Bai Lu's startled gaze, Gu Mian stood up. "I'm just getting a feel for it, that's all."
As he spoke, he brushed off the white coat he was wearing.
"So, did you feel anything?" Bai Lu watched Gu Mian silently.
"I felt that the floor is cold," Gu Mian responded truthfully.
Bai Lu: "..."
Coach Che had also been forcibly brought to the crime scene by Gu Mian. Currently, he was sprawled out on the couch in the living room, staring blankly at the ceiling like a soulless doll.
Sitting next to him was Xie Bi'an, who sat motionless on the couch. To an unknowing observer, he might have seemed like a mannequin someone had placed there.
Looking at her teammates, each more eccentric than the last, Bai Lu felt pessimistic about their future. As darkness began to fall, the lights had to be switched on to see clearly in the room. She didn't want to spend the night in such a place and redoubled her efforts to find clues.
Among them, only Keke was somewhat serious. She was standing outside the door, intently staring at the wall directly opposite it.
After a while, Gu Mian heard Keke's voice from outside, "Doctor, come and have a look."
Upon hearing this, Gu Mian walked out.
When he reached Keke's side, he found her observing a protruding, semi-circular black object on the wall.
"Is this… a surveillance camera?"
It doesn't look like it was installed by property management, but rather by the homeowner himself, Gu Mian thought.
The camera looked new and was aimed directly at Li Shu's front door. If the door was left open, the camera could capture the entire living room.
"Strange," Gu Mian frowned, looking at the camera installed at a height of about one and a half meters. "Normally, even if people install a camera, they put it above the door or on the hallway ceiling. This one is in such an odd place."
It seemed as if it was specifically installed to film the living room when the door was open.
"This looks like a camera Li Shu and the others who lived here installed. We should be able to find the footage from this camera in their home, right?" Keke bent slightly to examine the semi-circular camera.
"If we have the footage from this camera, we won't need to check the hallway surveillance at the property management office. This camera's footage would be much clearer than the hallway one; it can even show the inside of the house," Gu Mian said. Turning, he headed back into the house. "Let's go to the bedroom and check their computer."
Keke quickly followed Gu Mian.
She didn't dare to stay alone in the hallway for long.
What if the door suddenly SLAMMED shut? Then she'd be left alone in the hallway, she worried.
Bai Lu was already rummaging through cabinets and drawers in the room, hoping to find some useful clues.
Meanwhile, Xie Bi'an and Coach Che remained quietly on the couch like two corpses. Gu Mian really didn't understand why Xie Bi'an had come with him on this instance.
Of the three rooms, only Li Shu's had a computer.
Gu Mian pressed the computer's power button. While waiting for it to boot up, he casually picked up a photograph from the desk and examined it.
In the photo, Li Shu was smiling shyly at the camera, a grey residential building in the background.
Quiet and studious, Gu Mian thought. That was his first impression of Li Shu.
His name also played a part; it was so refined that just hearing it evoked the image of a neat, scholarly young man.
The computer finished starting up.
Li Shu hadn't set a password for his computer, so Gu Mian easily found the surveillance recordings in the files.
He moved the mouse cursor over the recording dated June 3rd and clicked to open it.
At this point, Bai Lu also stopped her search and gathered around the computer to watch the surveillance footage. She even dragged the "playing dead" Coach Che and Xie Bi'an into the room, saying they should help analyze it.
But the two of them, once in the room, merely sat on the bed in a daze, showing no signs of activity.
Seeing this, Bai Lu ignored them. She clutched something pink in her hand and stared intently at the computer. "Li Shu didn't want us to see this recording. He must be hiding something. Perhaps we can find the answer here." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
She had an outlandish theory: the murderer wasn't Yuan Haotian, but the sole survivor, Li Shu.
As for why she guessed this... she didn't know.
It was just her sixth sense telling her that the prisoner in the courtroom was not the real culprit.
Because the camera was directly opposite the front door, the footage was very clear.
Gu Mian dragged the timeline slider to ten o'clock at night, the time of the incident.
The three of them huddled around the computer, their eyes fixed on the screen.
Since they didn't know the exact time Yuan Haotian had broken in, Gu Mian increased the video playback speed and sat in a chair, waiting for someone to appear.
Before long, at 10:13 p.m., a figure appeared in the footage.
The person, dressed in a black tracksuit and carrying a gleaming kitchen knife, walked to the door. Then, using their other hand, they fumbled in a pocket and, after a moment, pulled out a key and inserted it into the lock.
Bai Lu's eyes widened as she watched the person on the screen.
It's undoubtedly Yuan Haotian, she thought.
He hadn't even bothered to disguise himself—no mask, no hat—simply arriving at Li Shu's front door wielding a knife.
"Where did he get the key from?" Keke asked curiously.
Bai Lu shook her head, indicating she didn't know.
Gu Mian remained silent, continuing to watch the footage.
Then, the door opened, and they saw a dark figure flit inside, the door immediately closing afterward.
The three of them could guess what was unfolding inside the house.
Bai Lu watched the timestamp on the progress bar. "According to Li Shu's statement," she murmured, "he returned from his night shift to find Yuan Haotian had killed his two roommates. He should be coming back around this time."
Yet, as minute after minute passed, Li Shu did not return.
Instead, the surveillance footage showed the closed door suddenly opening with a CREAK.
The door was opened from the inside!
"What's going on? Did Yuan Haotian open the door?" Bai Lu stared at the screen where the door had suddenly opened. "Did he leave before Li Shu returned?"
But soon, she was shocked to discover that the person who opened the door wasn't Yuan Haotian—it was Li Shu!
He was walking out of the house!
"He lied to us!" Bai Lu exclaimed, watching Li Shu's figure on the surveillance screen. "He claimed he was working the night shift and wasn't at home at this time!"
Keke wondered, deep in thought, Could Li Shu actually be the killer?
However, Keke soon realized that things weren't as she had assumed.
After opening the door, Li Shu quickly ran out of the camera's view, but he left the door wide open. The three of them could now clearly see the living room.
Inside, they saw three men entangled in a struggle.
A man in a blue shirt was tightly holding onto Yuan Haotian, who was wielding a knife. Another man in a white T-shirt appeared injured; he clutched one of his arms and desperately dodged Yuan Haotian's attacks.
But Yuan Haotian suddenly broke free from the man in blue holding him and lunged with his knife.
The man in the blue shirt fell, clutching his chest.
The man in white T-shirt wasn't lucky enough to escape either. He tried to flee, but Yuan Haotian cut him down before he could reach the door.
After killing the two men, Yuan Haotian, as if not satisfied, continued to hack and stab at their bodies savagely.
Then, many figures appeared on the screen—presumably neighbors Li Shu had called for help.
The neighbors, armed with brooms and mops, rushed into the house and quickly subdued Yuan Haotian.
The video was very clear.
When Li Shu ran out, the two men inside were still alive.
Yuan Haotian was undoubtedly the killer.
Keke pondered, "Li Shu didn't kill anyone. He didn't want us to see the surveillance footage because he didn't want us to find out he abandoned his friends and ran away."
"So that's what it was..." Bai Lu said hesitantly, nodding.
At that moment, Gu Mian dragged the progress bar to the footage after Yuan Haotian had killed the men.
On the screen, Yuan Haotian, his face tilted upwards, was repeatedly stabbing the two dead bodies—a sight to make one's hair stand on end.
Even though the surveillance footage had no sound, Bai Lu felt she could almost hear the sickening squelch of the knife cutting into flesh and blood just from watching.
"I've noticed something," Gu Mian said, staring at the screen. "The surveillance footage doesn't have sound, right?"
"Right, what's wrong with that?" Bai Lu turned her head to look at Gu Mian.
But as soon as she finished speaking, her expression changed as she suddenly realized something.
The surveillance footage has no sound... So where did that CREAK from the door opening earlier come from?
