Giant Dragon Lord: Starting from Daily Intelligence-Chapter 166 - 160: Conquering Red Iron Castle
"Look at the sky!"
Someone cried out in alarm.
Everyone looked up to see a massive shadow descending from high above.
Eleven tawny Storm Griffins, led by Alex, dove out of the clouds in a wedge formation, like golden arrows.
Behind them were fifty Pegasus Knights and the Amber Territory’s Pegasus Mage Squad, personally led by Great Mage Alina.
"What are they trying to do? Commit suicide?"
Viscount Andrew’s wine glass trembled. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
Red Iron Castle’s anti-air defenses were more than enough to severely damage these approaching Flying Magical Beasts.
However, the scene that unfolded next left all the onlookers in stunned silence.
The Pegasus Knights did not descend to challenge the range of the Bed Crossbows. Instead, they skimmed past at an extreme altitude.
Without any concern for precision, clay pots rained down from the sky, hailing upon the western wall of Red Iron Castle.
Most of the pots shattered in mid-air or upon impact with the battlements, splattering a thick, black liquid everywhere.
The defenders on the wall saw this but were powerless to stop it. Their bows and arrows couldn’t possibly reach an altitude of several hundred meters.
Following close behind them was the chanting of the Amber Territory’s Pegasus Mages.
One Fireball Technique after another, followed by streams of the Flame Burst Technique, precisely targeted the spots where the fire oil had landed.
Great Mage Alina’s figure was particularly conspicuous in the air. She raised her Magic Staff high, a magnificent Spell flowing from her lips.
"Meteor Fire Rain!"
A burning vortex seemed to appear in the sky. Countless massive Fireballs, trailing long tails of flame, howled down like meteors.
Its area of effect was so vast that it blanketed nearly half of the western wall.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The moment the fire oil coating the wall came into contact with the Magic Flame, it erupted with terrifying energy.
Crimson flames shot into the sky, instantly turning that section of the wall into a sea of fire.
The flames billowed and spread rapidly. Piercing, blood-curdling screams emerged from within, chilling all who heard them.
The soldiers on the walls became running torches, struggling in despair before collapsing.
Those twelve defensive assets—the Enchanted Bed Crossbows—now served as the finest fuel.
Their wooden structures twisted and carbonized in the Blazing Fire. The runes inscribed upon them lost all their Magic Power in the intense heat, and they finally collapsed with a crash, reduced to a pile of charcoal.
Only then did Alex and the Storm Griffin Knights he led truly bare their fangs. They launched no attacks, simply swooping past above the sea of fire.
Ten of the Griffin Knights flapped their wings in unison, stirring the violent Wind Element and whipping up a furious gale.
The wind fanned the flames!
The fire, which had originally been confined to the wall, was swept up by the gale. Like a living Giant Beast, it rolled and roared as it surged into the city.
The entire western side of Red Iron Castle was plunged into an apocalyptic scene.
On the highlands, there was dead silence.
Viscount Andrew’s wine glass fell to the ground with a CLANG, shattering to pieces.
He finally understood how Raylo had dared to make such an arrogant boast.
This wasn’t a war; it was a complete rout.
It was a meticulously planned strike on a completely different level, one that leveraged intellect, Magic, and absolute Power.
Just then, the ground began to tremble.
Having lost its air superiority and long-range suppression, Red Iron Castle was like a coward stripped of his armor.
The twenty-one Mammoth Knights, who had been waiting in silence, finally began their charge.
Twenty-one Giant Beasts took heavy strides, and the earth groaned in agony beneath their trampling feet.
They had only one target.
The main gate of the Fortress, which had seemed indestructible.
The defenders on the wall were struggling in the sea of fire, completely unable to mount any effective long-range counterattack.
The few arrows that did fly bounced off the Mammoths’ thick hides as if merely scratching an itch.
BOOM!
The first Mammoth slammed violently into the main gate.
The gate, reinforced with multiple Fortification Arrays, let out a tremendous sound. The entire wall shook, and a brilliant magical light flickered violently across the gate’s surface.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Again, and again.
The Mammoths took turns ramming the gate. The dull, rhythmic impacts were like the death knell of Red Iron Castle, each one making the defenders inside jump with fear.
Some Knights from the Valen Family tried to brace the gate from within, but their efforts were pathetic in the face of such absolute Power.
A few Pegasi were hit by stray arrows in the chaos and fell from the sky with mournful cries. This was the only price Raylo’s forces paid.
The ramming continued for five minutes, which felt as long as a century.
Finally, with a grating, earsplitting crash, the main gate of Red Iron Castle—a gate that had driven countless attackers to despair—collapsed inward, frame and all.
"Charge!"
The Mammoth Knights roared as they charged through the gateway, like a flood pouring into an anthill.
Behind them, the Knights of the Moonlight Knight Order and the Blazing Flame Knight Order, who had been lying in wait, raised their gleaming Long Swords and let out a heaven-shaking war cry as they surged like a tide into the once-unconquerable Fortress.
Inside Red Iron Castle, order collapsed in an instant.
The Mammoths that burst into the city didn’t stop. They were like twenty-one runaway Siege Hammers, rampaging straight down the main road.
Any barricades, cheval de frise, or soldiers putting up a desperate last stand in their path were easily crushed and trampled.
The Valen Family’s preparations for street fighting became a pathetic joke in the face of absolute size and Power.
The Knights of the Moonlight Knight Order followed close behind. Highly disciplined, they moved in groups of three and squads of five, like sharp scalpels swiftly carving up and clearing out the remaining enemies on either side of the streets.
The Blazing Flame Knight Order was even more ferocious. They struck directly at the enemy barracks and command posts, leaving a trail of Wailing in their wake.
Raylo did not charge into the city immediately.
He rode on the back of Baofeng, the Storm Griffin King, circling high above Red Iron Castle and surveying the entire battlefield.
On the highlands, the spectating Lords were speechless.
Viscount Andrew’s face was grim.
It wasn’t that he had never witnessed a siege before, but he had never seen one that so utterly defied all logic.
There was no desperate swarming of the walls, no bloody close-quarters combat, no prolonged war of attrition.
He had to admit that Black Stone Territory truly possessed the strength to devour this entire cake for itself, without any need for his cooperation.
"Monsters... They’re nothing short of a pack of monsters..."
A Baron muttered to himself. Watching the Mammoths rampaging through the city, he felt that if his own Knights were to face them, they probably wouldn’t last a single round.
An hour later, the fighting inside Red Iron Castle had mostly subsided.
Aside from a few die-hards still putting up sporadic resistance from within the buildings, most of the Valen Family’s soldiers and Knights had either been killed in battle or had wisely chosen to surrender.
